Hernando’s new book, Faces Like Devils, is an engrossing account of the Bald Knobbers, a southwest Missouri vigilante movement that emerged as a result of post Civil War lawlessness.Hernando places the Ozarks’ own vigilante groups in the broader context of American history: “Although often treated as a matter of local interest, the bloody history of the Bald Knobber organization informs a broader narrative of vigilante justice that has been a part of American history and culture from the beginning. It is a tradition literally older than the country itself.” The Bald Knobbers are ideological cousins to the “Regulator” movements of colonial era North and South Carolina, San Francisco’s Committees of Vigilance during the California Gold Rush, ‘”fence cutting wars” in the West, and of course the KKK among many others.This is not news for people in southwest Missouri. These were murderous night riders whose “improvised dispensing of justice” has been written about and portrayed in locally produced plays and movies both fictional and documentary. The phenomenon has been subject of feature writers’ columns since their beginnings in the nineteenth century. They were the heavies in Harold Bell Wright’s 1907 huge bestseller, The Shepherd of the Hills. The Mabes, a talented country music family, pulled the words into one to name their Branson hillbilly music show. These popular appropriations, Hernando notes, may explain the relative sparseness of Bald Knobber scholarship: “The popular image of the Bald Knobbers may also have tainted the group with the stigma of sensationalism and provincialism, causing some historians who might otherwise have written about the group to defer from doing so.”Two full-length books - Lucille Morris’s Baldknobbers, Caxton Press, 1939 and Elmo Ingenthron’s Bald Knobbers, Pelican Publishing, 1988 – have been published. Numerous popular articles, pamphlets and investigative journalists' exposés have added detail and color to this compelling story. The bibliography of Faces like Devils provides an extraordinarily comprehensive account of materials produced on the vigilantes in the last hundred years.Hernando has absorbed all these. He has also delved deeply into voluminous court records and newspaper articles from the time. He applied microscopic examination of the condition of post Civil War turmoil that brought about this war, which involved 700-900 people at one time. Night riding, hangings, floggings and gunfights were standard operating procedures.Certainly this tumult was not good for business. Missouri’s Governor pushed the court system to crack down on these vigilantes in the mid 1880s. Four were sentenced to hang. One got away. The other three were executed in a horrifically inept public hanging on grounds of the Christian County courthouse in Ozark.For those who know the story – and many in our part of the country do – this is an unprecedented compendium of personalities. Though one name is popularly applied, there were two distinct groups – the Bald Knobbers of Taney County and the Bald Knobbers of Christian and Douglas counties. The distinctions, Hernando contends, are important: “The two groups … used the same name, operated simultaneously, and inhabited roughly the same compact geographical area. Yet they exhibited such stark differences in their goals, tactics, and membership that it is sometimes difficult to see how they were considered part of the same group.” This book expertly clarifies these distinctions.Faces Like Devils tells a gripping story with blind tigers, prostitutes that followed the railroad lines, and Yankees and Confederates fighting old battles. By the summer of 1915 Germany was faced with two major problems in fighting World War I: how to break the British blockade and how to stop or seriously disrupt the British supply line across the Atlantic. Th e solution to the former was to find a way over, through, or under it. Aircraft in those days were too primitive, too short range, and too underpowered to accomplish this, and Germany lacked the naval strength to force a passage through the blockade. But if Germany could build a fleet of cargo U-boats that were large enough to carry meaningful loads and had the range to make a round trip between Germany and the United States without refueling, the blockade might be successfully broken.

Since the German navy could not cut Britain’s supply line to America, another answer lay in sabotaging munitions factories, depots, and ships, as well as infecting horses and mules at the western end of the supply line. German agents, with American sympathizers, successfully carried out more than fifty attacks involving fires and explosions and spread anthrax and glanders on the East Coast before America’s entry into the war on 6 April 1917.

Breaking the blockade with a fleet of cargo U-boats provided the lowest risk of drawing America into the war; at the same time, sabotage was incompatible with Germany’s diplomatic goal of keeping the United States out of the war. The two solutions were very different, but the fact that both campaigns were run by intelligence agencies―the Etappendienst (navy) and the Geheimdienst (army), through the agency of one man, Paul Hilken, in one American city, Baltimore, make them inseparable. Those solutions created the dichotomy that produced the U-boat Deutschland and the Baltimore Sabotage Cell. Here, Messimer provides the first study of the degree to which U.S. citizens were enlisted in Germany’s sabotage operations and debunks many myths that surround the Deutschland.

I was amazed at what was going on in Baltimore during WWI. Everyone should read this book and I am glad that Mr. Messimer has preserved a part of history that is not taught in schools.

Not much information that a submariner or person interested in submarines could get their teeth into. Also, while the cast of characters in Baltimore is outlined in considerable detail, we learn almost nothing about the biggest German espionage coup of WW I in the USA--the New Jersey Black Tom explosion. What impact did this and other explosions in war plants have? The destruction of one grain elevator in Connecticut was surely of no consequence. It's unclear how NYC and Baltimore rings coordinated to any effect.The impact of the British blockade is covered well and this leads to the context for the Deutschland experiment. For the reader, the impression is that it didn't add up to much value. How important were the dye stuffs that Deutschland carried on its two voyages to America? How important were the raw materials this submarine carried on its return to Germany?The Deutschland's war service reads like a comedy of errors and one would wonder why a submarine commander would even put to sea with the hazards that seem present in the U-155 {the designation for Deutschland as a commissioned member of Germany's W I navy.} U-155 seems to have spent a lot of time firing its deck gun {hundreds of rounds} but no insight on how difficult it must have been to manhandle the ammo for two 150 mm deck guns. USN WW II subs had their hands full handling ammo for their single 5-inch deck guns which didn't fire that many rounds. Where was the ammo stored for U-155? How many men were devoted to feeding these large, ungainly guns?There is a lot of mention of the spy ring's efforts to spread anthrax and glanders disease among U.S. horses and cattle to prevent them from being shipped to the British. To what end? What was accomplished? I'm left with the impression that a lot of the spies were just taking German money and flaring it off for personal use. The author agrees. What did German intelligence think was being accomplished in America? What did the German-American populace in America think of such activities as they came to light?There is mention that there were some seven cargo war boats serving as milch cows for Germany during WW I. What did they accomplish? How did the WW II versions profit from the WW I experiences?For me, there is an elusive quality to this book which makes me regret the investment of time I made in finishing it.

Messimer’s book The Baltimore Sabotage Cell, German Agents, American Traitors, and The U-boat Deutschland During World War I was a fascinating read. It provides more context to the whole German merchant U-boat plan better than any other published work. It explains in well-referenced detail how the U-boat fit into the German sabotage efforts in this country.Dr. Messimer is fluent in German, which enabled him to utilize the treasure trove of German documents and historians. This enabled him to put together a fast moving (and “factual”) story of plots and intrigue that could have made Tom Clancy jealous. This is not a stuffy history book. Dr. Messimer is a writer first and foremost; and he knows how to tell a captivating story. The fact that it is all historically true is beside the point.On a side note, anyone doing research on German espionage in the United State would want to own this book for its bibliography alone. It is an amazing compilation of resources.Enjoy the book,Sincerely,Steven Zukosky

From the Inside Flap Private Oney Foster Sweet's previously unpublished letters, diaries, and retrospective writings offer a unique glimpse of the U.S. Civil War from the bottom looking up; that is, from the view of a private simply trying to survive a deadly conflagration in which one in five combatants perished. He wrote:             "The generals did not see what the privates saw."   Nor can we as readers looking back 150 years later see what the privates saw. Blessed with the comforts and conveniences of 21st century life, we can easily glorify the war, but for those who were there, engaged in life-or-death struggles, the realities struck them at their core. Following the Battle of Antietam in 1862, Sweet told his mother:             "I went over the field after the fight and the dead and wounded lay so thick you could hardly step. Some had legs, arms, and heads torn off. Some groaning and breathing their last. . . . I never want to see such a sight again. . . . I have seen enough of war."   Yet, he saw much more at the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Spotsylvania, Appomattox, and, the bloodiest of them all, Gettysburg. From the Back Cover Looking back, after the war, Oney Sweet wrote: The unwritten part of our war is greater than all that has been written. Two soldiers side by side in a hot place in our battles did not see the same things. The generals did not see what the privates saw. His descriptions of the battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg--among others--captivate the reader. Yet, his missives relate more than just the hard, brutal times with "minnie balls . . . whizzing by our ears." They spent more time in camp--especially during the winter--than in combat, and they entertained themselves. A soldier's delight: the mail, the paymaster and tobacco. Occasionally, they received "a Quota of whiskey issued out to us" and at other times "Some licuor" found its way into their hands, resulting in "Some fun in camp." Not a few soldiers, including Sweet, spent time standing extra guard duty for fighting among themselves or other infractions. (Surely the whiskey and "licour" had nothing to do with that.) Weather permitting, they "played ball" as well as cards, held boxing matches, attended dances, gambled, read newspapers, and wrote letters, in addition to the drills, inspections, washing and mending clothes, building shelters, and foraging for food when their rations ran out. This first-hand account of what the private saw ia a delightful and informative addition to the many existing volumes on the American Civil War. It also serves as a companion to Trumpets of the Morning, written by Marian Julia Sweet, Oney Sweet's daughter. Her book offers a fictionalized account of the loneliness, anxiety and difficulties she believed her parents endured. It was recently published (2014) by three of her grandchildren: William Ketchum, Joan Ketchum Reamer, and James Grant.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Enthralling, Well-Written and One of the Best Collections of Soldier Letters and Diary Entries By Gene C. Armistead This is definitely one of the very best of the many published collections of Civil War letters and diaries. Pvt. O. F. Sweet of the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery wrote prolifically to members of his family and kept a diary from 1863 until just after the close of the war. His writing was always very clear and lucid. Through his writing, the reader is able to trace the evolution of a man from a starry-eyed volunteer to a practical soldier. The scenes after a battle are movingly described by him. He provides excellent summaries of the duties of a crew of an artillery piece. His near constant mentions of letters, newspapers and packages received from his family at home reveal how important these were to the Civil War soldier and his morale. Likewise, Sweet invariably reports the weather and what food he had, bringing out the impact they had on the soldier. If this were not enough, the editor (Larry Edwards) has supplemented Sweet's accounts with footnotes identifying and explaining the people, events and locations mentioned by Sweet and added contextual material that masterfully sets Sweet's story in the overall picture of the war in the east. WHAT THE PRIVATE SAW does just that - provide a very clear picture of the Civil War as seen and experienced by a private soldier of the Union.

By AUGUST J MARCHETTI There aren't many first hand accounts of soldiers serving within this specific unit, so naturally when I first heard this book was being written based on the letters and diaries of Olney Sweet, I was very interested. I was fortunate enough to have a sample copy sent to me before it was published, and truly enjoyed every bit of it. Private Sweet's account of his service in the First Pennsylvania Reserve Light Artillery during the Civil War is just another missing puzzle piece finally back in its proper place, thanks to those who preserved his memoirs and to the editor of this book, Larry Edwards.

Gallup Over time, items such as old letters and diaries that were forgotten in the back of a closet begin to acquire new interest, simply because they are irreplaceable links to the past. I have in my possession more than my share of such family documents, a few of which date back to the Civil War era. Very little of consequence is recorded therein, but the simple fact that they have survived this long is sufficient reason to keep them a while longer. Eventually, no doubt, they will crumble to dust and/or be tossed out, although probably not by me.But what do you do with archives that actually provide insight--for example, into the daily life of a soldier in the Union Army? This was the dilemma faced by Bill Ketchum (a friend and former colleague), who'd inherited the papers of his great-grandfather, Private Oney Foster Sweet.Much of our information about historical events is from a high-altitude perspective, built from the now-understood significance of things like campaigns and battles--significance that likely was not so obvious to the participants. Oney notes that "the generals did not see what the privates saw," and this book is his contribution of that latter view. (For a modern-day example, one might try Felix G's memoir, Third-Graders at War.)Bill had showed me these letters many years ago. Now he has enlisted the help of editor Larry M. Edwards to pull everything together and provide context and background as needed.Oney's letters describe days on end of marching back and forth across Virginia, sleeping on the cold ground, waiting for packages from home, and occasionally fighting Rebels (who tell him they are just as tired of the whole sorry business as he is). On the other hand, he brags about having gained weight in spite of the hardships ("124 lbs, the most I ever weighed") and about having learned how to cook.After publication of this book, I met Bill and Larry at a Memorial Day event hosted by an historical society. A spokesman for that group said that the Civil War was the test that made the U.S. the great country it subsequently became. That, again, is the high-altitude view of things. It may be true, but somehow that means a bit less without an awareness of men who lay on the ground freezing at night and by day saw comrades struck by cannon balls.This is a very worthwhile read, and I'm glad Oney Foster Sweet's story has now been preserved.

Fran Morris lied about her age and was found out. The judge couldn't let her just leave with her younger sister.Edgar White married her instead of letting her go to saloon or his younger brother marry her.Edgar was a orphan on a train years ago too. His father took him in plus others. Edgar feels he owes his father everything, while he is gone Edgar was in charge getting the cattle to the buyer. With the train derailed he and his brothers decide to trail drive them. Fran and Emma sneak into the wagon.Fran is only 19 but passes as younger. She is very protective of her sister. She has a lot of faith that her prayers are answered. Her parents have died and her brother has disappeared. She pretended to be younger so they could go on the orphan train.Emma is fifteen. She has become fragile. A older richer man has become obsessed with her and tried some things with her. His men have even come out west looking for her. She is scared and shy.You have to admire Fran, she is smart, full of faith and a hard worker. Yes she passed herself off younger that was the only way she had to get her sister away. She even agreed to marry Edgar.This is a good story. I have only read now two books in this series but would read the rest of it some time. It does mention faith, prayers and scriptures. It fits well into the story. It is full of drama, action and good dialogue.I was given this ebook to read for purpose of writing an honest review of The Wrangler's Inconvenient Wife. received the book through Net Galley and Harlequin.

She wanted to protect her sister By Loveagoodread All Fran wanted was to protect her sister from a man who was obsessed with the idea of claiming her, a minor, for himself. He is powerful and rich, able to pay lawmen, false witnesses and hired hands to do his bidding. Edgar only wants to help his adoptive parents with their ranch. When Fran's only choice is an offer to work at a saloon, Edgar steps up to the plate and reluctantly offers to marry her. Fran is so relieved to have been rescued from an unthinkable option, she readily accepts Edgar's offer and marries him. Edgar doesn't trust women, so he decides to help her find a job in the neighboring town. Although he feels attracted to his wife and feels a strong need to protect her, he refuses to allow her into his life. Fran sees beyond his gruffness and into his heart and falls in love with her husband. Edgar has to protect his wife and sister from the man and his cohorts who are following them and he must decide if the accusations made against his wife are true or not. She tells him that they are lies, but can he trust her? Can this marriage ever become real?

I have especially enjoyed her current series and this book I read in one day! Each book just keeps getting better and better! Edgar has always said to himself that he's not getting married. Even the whole town knows it! However, when Fran and her young sister, Emma, come on the Orphan Train and it crashes in town and the sheriff tries to arrest Fran for defrauding the orphanage, the only solution at the spur of the moment was for Edgar to marry Fran. It will be in name only, of course. As the reality sinks in, Edgar needs to figure out what he's going to do with the two gals because he sure doesn't WANT to be married! Edgar has more important duties though. He needs to get his father's cattle to market and with no trains running, he has to take them on a cattle drive. Fran and Emma decide to stowaway because they don't want to be alone. Someone is following them and wants to harm them. That's why they were on the Orphan Train. The cattle drive was fascinating. I love learning about that part of Old West. Lacy did a great job with her research to make it very realistic. I loved the interaction between Edgar, Fran, Emma and Edgar's brothers. The "coming around" of Edgar is written so naturally and the ending is such a heartwarming one that I will remember this book for a long time! I recommend it!

It thoroughly covers a vast amount of information. It's comprehensive enough that there's nothing on the test that you did not encounter in the guide. Each topic While some topics are more in depth than others, each subject has a detailed overview to make sure you're as prepared as possible for anything that comes on the test. It is clearly written and has helpful tips and strategies to help you be fully prepared come test day. It is a really great tool to use.

Over a thousand years ago, the Persian physician and chemist Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi presented his students with a book of alchemy instructions called the Kitab al-Asrar or Book of Secrets. For over seven hundred years this systematic text on managing chemicals, equipment, and procedures was copied and imitated throughout Europe. Using historian Julius Ruska’s authoritative German translation, this book presents al-Razi’s Book of Secrets in English for the first time and analyzes it from the perspective of a modern scientific laboratory. The Kitab al-Asrar offers a view into the understanding of chemistry and procedure organization in the tenth-century Islamic world. Yet a careful reading yields even more than that. As a laboratory manual, it gives intriguing clues into Persian culture under the Abbasid caliphate: the relationship of teacher and student; attitudes toward safety, labor, and quantification; tools and logical problem-solving; commerce and the availability of luxury goods; and the value of the written word. This is the Kitab al-Asrar.

The Alchemy of Al-Razi: A Translation of the "Book of Secrets", by Ph.D., Gail Marlow Taylor

About the Author Gail Marlow Taylor began her graduate studies in history following a 25-year career in laboratory medicine. She completed her master’s degree in 2008 with a thesis entitled: “Al-Razi's Book of Secrets: The Practical Laboratory in the Medieval Islamic World.” This analysis, which included her English translation of the Book of Secrets, won the 2009 Outstanding Thesis Award at California State University, Fullerton. In June, 2014, she was awarded a doctorate in history at University of California, Irvine. Her dissertation analyzed the reception of New World medicinal plants in sixteenth-century Germany, and included a year of research in Wolfenbuettel on a Fulbright Scholarship. She lives with her husband Charles in Coto de Caza, California, where she enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren and writing her blog, “History’s Edge.”
