The literature on Abraham Lincoln's assassination is replete with errors, theories and guesswork. This comprehensive re-examination of the facts seeks to correct errors in the record, reconcile differences of opinion, offer explanations for unknowns and evaluate theories. Drawing on hundreds of sources, the author covers the prelude to the war, Booth's accomplices and their roles in the conspiracy, the kidnapping ruse that concealed the intended decapitation of the government, the mysteries surrounding key players, the assassination itself, Booth's escape, the pursuit of the fugitives, the death of Booth and the trial and sentencing of his co-conspirators (except John Surratt) and one innocent man. The simple conspiracy theory is rejected by the author in favor of the theory that Booth worked with the complicity of the highest levels of the Confederate government and its Secret Service Bureau, whose twofold purpose was retribution and snatching Southern independence from a weakened and chaotic Federal Government.

Review "Everyone should have this one on their Lincoln bookshelf." --Joan Chaconas, History Specialist Surratt House Museum/ MNCPPC, Clinton, Maryland"A brilliant contribution to the growing consensus that the assassination of Lincoln was not an isolated act, but only one part of a desperate, last-ditch effort by Confederate leaders to gain independence by multiple assassinations." --Frederick Hatch, author of Protecting President Lincoln, The Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy Trial and Its Legacy, and In Honor Or Dishonor, a novel of the Lincoln Assassination"For 150 years, scholars have analyzed details of the Lincoln assassination story and arrived at their own interpretations. Just when you think the 'i' is dotted and the 't' crossed, a book like Mr. Fazio's arrives on the scene." --Laurie Verge, Director of Surratt House Museum

Worth the time to read from cover to cover By Ionia Froment I know what you're thinking...oh no, not another Lincoln book--and whilst I understand that sentiment, allow me to ensure you that this one is worth the time to read and actually does present some new information and ideas.Being fascinated with this subject myself, I've read most everything about it that I can get my hands on. When I saw this book I had fears that it would be a compendium of repeated information, but that is not the case. This author has made great strides to correct false information that has been repeated as truth, and to present ideas and back them up with hard evidence. Mr. Fazio asks questions in this writing that I have not seen elsewhere.I found this to be a well-rounded book, with a good, solid background history. Whether this is your first Lincoln book, or if you have been studying the man and his life and death for some time, this book will have something to offer you. Some of the points discussed at length in this book are:The attempts on Lincoln's life prior to the actual assassination.Who was who in each circle, the president's and that of the confederates.Charles Forbes and his involvement.A sensible debate over Booth's supposed jump from the presidential box and his resulting broken leg.Differences of opinion of historians on multiple eventsAs well as many more points. I was most impressed by the research this author compiled on Booth. John C. Fazio has presented the most worthwhile description of the man and his motivations that I have seen yet in any book. There are photos included in this book that I have not seen used in prior books. I also appreciated the author's view on Spangler and his role in the events. This is an extensively researched, well-worded book that did more than just repeat a conspiracy theory for the millionth time. I appreciated the author's approach to presenting information and not attempting to sway the reader in any particular direction. This would be a perfect choice to introduce this subject to anyone who is just beginning to research it, as well as a great addition to any collector's library. I was greatly impressed. This review is based on a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Amazon Queen "Puck"'s assessment of it could not be more wrong. No evidence? All supposition? Was Blackburn's yellow fever plot supposition? It included sending "infected" shirts to Lincoln and was without doubt known to Davis and Benjamin. Was Harney's mission to assassinate Lincoln and other Union leaders by blowing up part of the White House supposition? It too was known to Davis and Benjamin. Davis and Benjamin knew all about Booth and his team and their conspiracy, but did nothing to stop them. Was that supposition? Was Ste. Marie's Affidavit supposition, the one in which he swore that Surratt had admitted that he and Booth had killed Lincoln, that they had acted under the instructions of persons under Davis's immediate orders, and that Surratt would not exonerate Davis? What kind of evidence is Amazon Queen "Puck" looking for? A writing in which Davis ordered Booth to kill Lincoln and another writing in which Benjamin ordered Powell to kill Seward? She may as well look for a dodo bird, because such writings do not exist, because they never existed. Confederate leaders weren't so stupid as to put such orders in writing.

By Chip Lambert Just when Civil War scholars thought it was safe to lock the doors of the Lincoln assassination library, here comes attorney and author John C. Fazio with another compelling piece of work in Decapitating the Union. The book is captivating and provides incredible attention to details in arguing the culpability of Jefferson Davis and his confederate subordinates as part of a larger conspiracy to murder several key Union governmental figures besides the president.Fazio lays out a pertinent background history of John Wilkes Booth and his team members, and then presents his case to the reader with a methodical dissection of events prior to the assassination, as well as the scenario at Ford's Theater, Booth's escape and short lived capture, the arrest of the remaining team members at large, and the subsequent trial. He weaves the story with numerous facts and evidence to disprove the single madman theory of Booth acting alone with a handful of unsophisticated southern sympathizers, and sheds light on the idea of there being possibly hundreds of other well connected, educated, wealthy, people supporting Booth as well as other mission minded assailants with similar plans for Vice-President Johnson, cabinet members Seward and Stanton, and General Grant to name a few. The author has reviewed prior works extensively and uses a quasi meta-analysis to compare and contrast the opinions, disagreements, guesswork, and known facts from many historians, scribes, and Lincoln experts. His meticulous research and evidence from hundreds of depositions, testimonials, transcripts, and letters prove the point that Booth could not have acted alone.Decapitating the Union is a powerful book, from a powerful attorney and author, with a powerful argument and persuasion. Unlock the Lincoln library for yet another fascinating book on the subject!
