The American Nation (15th Edition), by Mark C. Carnes, John A. Garraty

About the Author Mark C. Carnes received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his PhD in history from Columbia University. He has chaired both the history and American studies departments at Barnard College, Columbia University. Carnes and Garraty were General Editors of the 26-volume American National Biography, for which they were awarded the Waldo Leland Prize of the American Historical Association. Carnes has published numerous books on American social and cultural history, including Secret Ritual and Manhood in Victorian America (1989), Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1995), Novel History: Historians and Novelists Confront America’s Past (2001), and Invisible Giants: 50 Americans That Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books (2002). Carnes also pioneered the Reacting to the Past pedagogy, winner of the Theodore Hesburgh Award, sponsored by TIAA-CREF, as the outstanding pedagogical innovation in the nation (2004). In Reacting to the Past, college students play elaborate games, set in the past, their roles informed by classic texts. (For more on Reacting, see: www.barnard.edu/reacting.) In 2005 the American Historical Association named Carnes the recipient of the William Gilbert Prize for the best article on teaching history. The late John A. Garraty, formerly Gouverneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University, received his PhD from Columbia University and an LHD from Michigan State University. He authored and edited scores of books, among them biographies of Silas Wright, Henry Cabot Lodge, Woodrow Wilson, George W. Perkins, and Theodore Roosevelt. Garraty’s The New Commonwealth, included in the new American Nation series, challenged earlier dismissals of what was commonly known as “the Gilded Age.” His The Great Depression argued that political leaders throughout the world happened upon “solutions” much like those proposed by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Garraty was co-General Editor with Mark Carnes of the American National Biography.

The literature on Abraham Lincoln's assassination is replete with errors, theories and guesswork. This comprehensive re-examination of the facts seeks to correct errors in the record, reconcile differences of opinion, offer explanations for unknowns and evaluate theories. Drawing on hundreds of sources, the author covers the prelude to the war, Booth's accomplices and their roles in the conspiracy, the kidnapping ruse that concealed the intended decapitation of the government, the mysteries surrounding key players, the assassination itself, Booth's escape, the pursuit of the fugitives, the death of Booth and the trial and sentencing of his co-conspirators (except John Surratt) and one innocent man. The simple conspiracy theory is rejected by the author in favor of the theory that Booth worked with the complicity of the highest levels of the Confederate government and its Secret Service Bureau, whose twofold purpose was retribution and snatching Southern independence from a weakened and chaotic Federal Government.

Review "Everyone should have this one on their Lincoln bookshelf." --Joan Chaconas, History Specialist Surratt House Museum/ MNCPPC, Clinton, Maryland"A brilliant contribution to the growing consensus that the assassination of Lincoln was not an isolated act, but only one part of a desperate, last-ditch effort by Confederate leaders to gain independence by multiple assassinations." --Frederick Hatch, author of Protecting President Lincoln, The Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy Trial and Its Legacy, and In Honor Or Dishonor, a novel of the Lincoln Assassination"For 150 years, scholars have analyzed details of the Lincoln assassination story and arrived at their own interpretations. Worth the time to read from cover to cover By Ionia Froment I know what you're thinking...oh no, not another Lincoln book--and whilst I understand that sentiment, allow me to ensure you that this one is worth the time to read and actually does present some new information and ideas.Being fascinated with this subject myself, I've read most everything about it that I can get my hands on. When I saw this book I had fears that it would be a compendium of repeated information, but that is not the case. This author has made great strides to correct false information that has been repeated as truth, and to present ideas and back them up with hard evidence. Mr. Fazio asks questions in this writing that I have not seen elsewhere.I found this to be a well-rounded book, with a good, solid background history. Whether this is your first Lincoln book, or if you have been studying the man and his life and death for some time, this book will have something to offer you. Some of the points discussed at length in this book are:The attempts on Lincoln's life prior to the actual assassination.Who was who in each circle, the president's and that of the confederates.Charles Forbes and his involvement.A sensible debate over Booth's supposed jump from the presidential box and his resulting broken leg.Differences of opinion of historians on multiple eventsAs well as many more points. I was most impressed by the research this author compiled on Booth. John C. Fazio has presented the most worthwhile description of the man and his motivations that I have seen yet in any book. There are photos included in this book that I have not seen used in prior books. I also appreciated the author's view on Spangler and his role in the events. This is an extensively researched, well-worded book that did more than just repeat a conspiracy theory for the millionth time. I appreciated the author's approach to presenting information and not attempting to sway the reader in any particular direction. This would be a perfect choice to introduce this subject to anyone who is just beginning to research it, as well as a great addition to any collector's library. I was greatly impressed. This review is based on a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Amazon Queen "Puck"'s assessment of it could not be more wrong. No evidence? All supposition? Was Blackburn's yellow fever plot supposition? It included sending "infected" shirts to Lincoln and was without doubt known to Davis and Benjamin. Was Harney's mission to assassinate Lincoln and other Union leaders by blowing up part of the White House supposition? It too was known to Davis and Benjamin. Davis and Benjamin knew all about Booth and his team and their conspiracy, but did nothing to stop them. Was that supposition? Was Ste. Marie's Affidavit supposition, the one in which he swore that Surratt had admitted that he and Booth had killed Lincoln, that they had acted under the instructions of persons under Davis's immediate orders, and that Surratt would not exonerate Davis? What kind of evidence is Amazon Queen "Puck" looking for? A writing in which Davis ordered Booth to kill Lincoln and another writing in which Benjamin ordered Powell to kill Seward? She may as well look for a dodo bird, because such writings do not exist, because they never existed. Confederate leaders weren't so stupid as to put such orders in writing.

By Chip Lambert Just when Civil War scholars thought it was safe to lock the doors of the Lincoln assassination library, here comes attorney and author John C. Fazio with another compelling piece of work in Decapitating the Union. The book is captivating and provides incredible attention to details in arguing the culpability of Jefferson Davis and his confederate subordinates as part of a larger conspiracy to murder several key Union governmental figures besides the president.Fazio lays out a pertinent background history of John Wilkes Booth and his team members, and then presents his case to the reader with a methodical dissection of events prior to the assassination, as well as the scenario at Ford's Theater, Booth's escape and short lived capture, the arrest of the remaining team members at large, and the subsequent trial. He weaves the story with numerous facts and evidence to disprove the single madman theory of Booth acting alone with a handful of unsophisticated southern sympathizers, and sheds light on the idea of there being possibly hundreds of other well connected, educated, wealthy, people supporting Booth as well as other mission minded assailants with similar plans for Vice-President Johnson, cabinet members Seward and Stanton, and General Grant to name a few. The author has reviewed prior works extensively and uses a quasi meta-analysis to compare and contrast the opinions, disagreements, guesswork, and known facts from many historians, scribes, and Lincoln experts. His meticulous research and evidence from hundreds of depositions, testimonials, transcripts, and letters prove the point that Booth could not have acted alone.Decapitating the Union is a powerful book, from a powerful attorney and author, with a powerful argument and persuasion. Unlock the Lincoln library for yet another fascinating book on the subject!

These books are a little unique in that they or more short stories than full-length books, which means you get to the business portion quickly. The characters have some background but they are not fully developed like you would see in a traditional story line. The sex scenes are graphic and rival the explicitness of Fifty Shades of Grey. In order to keep in line with the story, you do have to read the 3-series book in order, otherwise you'll be jumping in the middle of the story.

*****Get Your FREE BONUSES When You Download This Book!*****Inventors are often looked up to because they were able to contribute something to society. In their own way, they delivered convenience. The main reason why inventors are being studied in school is to honor them, it is, after all, only proper to do so especially if what they have invented ultimately became a part of our daily lives. But if you were asked to name five inventors or scientist that you know, the chances of mentioning Nikola Tesla are slim. Most people do not even know who the man is. Some will be able to point out familiarity, as if a teacher back in high school mentioned that name. Nikola Tesla is deemed by many as the True Father of Electricity. He was a man who never stopped with one discovery. He thought way ahead of his time. Your purchase of this book will be a proof of how curious you are about the Serbian inventor.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. making the reading look like a mere survey By SavoirNoir I thought this book was a decent start to the tale of Tesla. One thing i thought it did well was to mention some modern things that made Tesla and his inventions more relevant to the reader. The writing style was conversational for the most part. One of the things that bothered me about the book was the frequent hyperbolic inserts of drama that were really done kind of hamfisted. The biggest issue I had was that this was a mere skimming of Tesla's life and drama, making the reading look like a mere survey. I would have liked more in-depth detail and some details on the few anecdotes.

Goetter I've often heard of Nikola Testa , but never realized how when he had the opportunity torevolutionize the electric energy industry he was stopped on all sides because of the GREEDfrom the big industry. ie Ford and G.E. The sad thing is ,that many politicians pretend to want to help thepoor 3rd world countries but this man could have positively effected millions of peoples lives.Could you imagine FREE electricity from nature itself.

Daring Katie: First Time Lesbian Sex Sometimes girls who are lonely end up in a place where they would usually not be or in a situation they would usually not find themselves in. I think that is probably true but I can attest to the fact that occasionally a girl who is not lonely or upset in any, nor even having trouble in life can find herself in a strange situation as well. I can testify to that because it happened to me recently. Thanks to a few crazy friends of mine and a weekend when my boyfriend was out of town, I ended up having one of the hottest nights I could imagine all because of a crazy dare. Warning: This ebook contains very explicit sex including First Time Lesbian Sex, Sex with a Stranger, Oral Sex, and more. Only mature adults who won’t find graphic sexual content offensive should read this story. Here is a preview: “Are you kidding?” I smirked, “All I have to do is go to someone you pick out and get myself invited to their room or their place? Seriously? That's the easiest dare ever. You're on, just point to him.” They grinned at each other widely again and extended hands to shake on it for some reason. I usually didn't need to prove my word but I obliged them the handshakes and waited. It was then that I saw the gleam in Amanda's eyes. She was certainly one of the wildest friends I had ever had in my young twenty-five years so to see that look in her eyes meant something unexpected was definitely in the air. Just when they started looking around I saw Amanda lick her lips in a sultry way and I started to get a little nervous. I did notice at the time that what I felt was far less nerves than it was excitement and I figured the night might be just exactly as fun as the other three thought it would. Boy was I ever right. “There,” Emma said but didn't point, “Three stools down from the far left end of the bar.” After following their directions I glanced back at each of their growing smiles and smirked as I sheepishly asked, “Do you mean five stools down on the right or three on the right instead of the left?” “Oh,” Denise smiled widely, “There was no mistake in what she said Katie, my girl.” Once more I followed the directions that Emma gave and came up with the same person, “But that's a girl.” Amanda nodded with her mischievous little smile, “Damn hot one too, if I do say so myself.” “You can't be serious,” I said protesting the choice even though I could already feel the excitement that the dare was stirring inside. “I've never been with a girl before.” “Don't knock it 'til you try it girl,” Amanda said.

The heroine is changed only in that she realizes that she is bisexual as she still loves her boyfriend. The descriptions are very erotic.

Free Ebook PDF Lewis & Clark: Adventures West, by John Hamilton

Originally published in hardcover and a Finalist at the 17th Annual Minnesota Book Awards, now available for the first time as an ebook! Perfect for school reports, but a gripping tale for everyone, young or old. Featuring 187 illustrations; 4 maps; Travel tips; Glossary; Index; Foreword by Ron Laycock, past-president of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. Lewis & Clark: Adventures West tells the greatest true-life adventure story in American history. In 1804, the Corps of Discovery set out to explore the unknown lands of Louisiana Territory and beyond. For more than two years they struggled against untamed rivers and clawed their way through rugged wilderness, all the while surviving raging storms, grizzly bears, starvation, and sickness. They also witnessed the beauty of the American landscape: endless plains, snow-capped mountains, and hundreds of newly discovered plants and animals. They crossed paths with dozens of Native American tribes, with cultures both rich and fascinating. Led by two extraordinary commanders, they would be the first American citizens to gaze upon the vastness of the Great Plains; first to cross the Continental Divide; first to struggle over the Rocky Mountains until they reached rivers that ran westward. Pushing on, they would be the first Americans to reach the Pacific Ocean overland from the east. Lewis & Clark: Adventures West brings to life the Corps of Discovery's epic journey. Excerpts from Lewis & Clark's journals add depth to the book's riveting narrative. Richly illustrated with rare historical photos, maps, paintings, journal sketches, and breathtaking photography, it's an exciting tale for anyone--young or old--with a thirst for adventure. "Well researched and beautifully illustrated." -- Ron Laycock, Past-President, Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation "The narratives are well written. Clear and lively, they make seamless and effective use of primary-source material. The journals of both Lewis and Clark are interpolated frequently, always adding depth and illumination to the text. Illustrations are equally judiciously chosen and well placed. The use of Clark's maps is particularly inspired and serves to create respect for both the cartographer himself and for the task set out for the Corps of Discovery... an excellent stepping stone to in-depth adult titles such as Stephen E. Ambrose's Undaunted Courage." -- School Library Journal "The text offers a concise outline of the expedition, and it is nicely illustrated by a mix of paintings and new and vintage photographs. For his research, Hamilton traveled the length of the trail and took virtually all of the contemporary photos." -- We Proceeded On, the official publication of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation "[Hamilton] filled the book with pictures to make the journey come alive for his young readers. The book is filled with photos of historical sites, Lewis and Clark re-enactors, vast landscapes, and wildlife. He also makes use of historical portraits and maps throughout the work." -- Michele Linck, Sioux City Journal

Although famous for his purported last words—“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”—few people know the real Nathan Hale.M. William Phelps brings into focus the life of this famed patriot and first spy of the American Revolution, charting Hale’s rural childhood, his education at Yale, and his work as a schoolteacher. Like many young Americans, he was soon drawn into the colonies’ war for independence and became a captain in Washington’s army. When the general was in need of a spy, Hale willingly rose to the challenge, gathering intelligence behind British lines on Long Island, and in the end bravely sacrificing his life for the sake of American liberty.Using Hale’s own journals and letters as well as testimonies from his friends and contemporaries, Phelps depicts the Revolution as it was seen from the ground. From the confrontation in Boston to the battle for New York City, readers experience what life was like for an ordinary soldier in the struggling Continental Army.In this impressive, well-researched biography, Phelps separates historical fact from long-standing myth to reveal the truth about Nathan Hale, a young man who deserves to be remembered as an original American patriot.

Nathan Hale: The Life and Death of America's First Spy, by M. William Phelps

From Booklist Nathan Hale is a secular saint of American patriotism. Facing a British gallows for spying during the Revolutionary War, he supposedly uttered these immortal words: “I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” Phelps has written an informative, interesting biography of Hale that effectively reveals the flesh-and-blood human behind the iconic image. Clearly an admirer of Hale, he has written nothing that detracts from Hale’s reputation; instead, he has provided a nuanced portrait of a deeply religious, idealistic young man whose short life was dedicated to various forms of public service. Hale was raised in rural Connecticut, attended Yale at the age of 14, and graduated with honors. Upon graduation, he worked as a schoolteacher, and after Lexington and Concord, joined a Connecticut militia. He seemed to approach service to the Patriot cause as a passion, not merely a duty. Phelps, using Hale’s own correspondence, clears up some of the murky details surrounding Hale’s spying, arrest, and execution. This is a well-done, balanced account of a short but interesting life. --Jay Freeman

Review “Nathan Hale is a secular saint of American patriotism. Phelps has written an informative, interesting biography of Hale that effectively reveals the flesh-and-blood human behind the iconic image.”—Booklist

Review “Phelps has brilliantly taken Nathan Hale from the faded memory of history and reintroduced us to a vibrant young man . . . who steps across the line to act for his country.” (Joseph J. Trento, author of The Secret History of the CIA)

Phelps' book misses the mark by a wide margin. Phelps did a decent job of summarizing and rehashing others' work on Hale, but Phelps is certainly no historian. His books biggest failings come when trying to impart the larger situation of Revolutionary New England, and the time period in general. Some of his most egregious misstatements should have been picked up by an editor, but apparently this historical biography was neither written nor edited by someone with more than cursory knowledge of the American Revolution. Furthermore, Phelps spends an inordinate amount ink quoting- and seriously considering- the paeans of 19th century "historians" like Washington Irving (seriously? Washington Irving?) and Charles Dudley Warner. On Hale's life, stick with the older biographies but approach them with a critical eye. On Hale's times, go with just about anything else.

25 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Regrets and honor By Linda Pagliuco Other than a few children's authors, no one has published a definitive biography of Nathan Hale for decades. M. William Phelps has now stepped in to fill the gap. Using his investigative research skills, honed as a true crime writer, Phelps has combed the archives to find any and all of the information currently available about the life of Nathan Hale. That is not an easy task, as most of the primary documents come from British sources, who, understandably, were biased. Most of the secondhand sources were provided years after Hale's death in 1776, and the tendency at that time was to glorify and romanticize. In this book, Phelps has pulled together all available, credible documentation, and presented the information in an interesting format that blends fact-based fiction (vignettes from Hale's life) and hard data. Hale's upbringing, early stint as a schoolteacher, and fateful career as Revolutionary War soldier, are critically examined and brought to life. Hale is portrayed as an earnest young man who, like many of his contemporaries, saw the war for independence as a chance to prove one's belief in and devotion to the ideals of liberty and equality. Perhaps the most intriguing section deals with the possible ways in which Hale was identified and apprehended as a spy, as the mythology swirling around that event has long been debated. Did Samuel Hale, Nathan's Tory cousin and an officer on the staff of British General Gage, betray his kinsman? Did the infamous Robert Rogers entrap him? What about the patron of the tavern Nathan was said to frequent? It will probably never be possible to determine exactly how and why Nathan Hale became the "martyr spy" of the American Revolution. Evidence clearly indicates that he wanted to do something heroic and memorable, and that indeed is what happened. Did he really say,"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country" just moments before his death by hanging? I think he did. Read Phelps's Nathan Hale and draw your own conclusions.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Starts out well...... By Stephen B. Hale Seemed to be researched well, writing was ok, especially about Nathan's early life. It was while Nathan was making his escape from New York that I heartily disagree with Mr. Phelps conclusions. He has the wise and intelligent Nathan setting up a social schedule in the middle of running for his life with the most dastardly villain on Long Island, Robert Rogers. Rogers was THE most famous Ranger in all of America at that time. Nathan being a Captain in Knowlton's Rangers himself would know everything there was to know about Robert Rogers including the little fact that he was fighting on the side of the British. Given Nathan's background, education and experience up to this point in his short life it is just not possible that Nathan was captured in this manner. Rodgers Rangers were mostly robbing anyone they could on Long Island. Its more likely Nathan was jumped from ambush for the sole purpose of robbing a Dutch Schoolmaster, he was searched and the thieves found the maps and drawings and decided they could profit more being soldiers that evening than thieves. I gave this book two stars for Mr. Phelps able handling of Nathans early life and would recommend it for that part.

The enchanting Alix of Wanthwaite returns in a suspenseful and richly textured adventure in which nothing less than the future of England is at stake.Alix is home at her beloved estate on the Scottish border when King Richard’s soldiers march into her castle and demand to take her to the Continent with them. King Richard has been captured while on Crusade, and Alix is among the nobles whose lives will be collateral for the king’s ransom. But when she’s delivered to Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard’s mother, she is dumbfounded to learn that the queen has other plans for her. King Richard needs an heir, Eleanor tells Alix. Repulsed by his queen, a homely religious fanatic, he has told his mother that the only woman he wants is the one he met on Crusade, when she was disguised as a boy. Richard wants Alix to be his mistress and the mother of the next Plantagenet king. Now a beguiling and irrepressible young woman, Alix faces more tribulations—and romance—on this trip to Europe, where affairs of the state and affairs of the heart are intricately intertwined.

Banners of Gold: A Novel, by Pamela Kaufman

From Publishers Weekly Home in England from the crusades (Shield of Three Lions, Lady Alix now is stranded and vulnerable at her Wanthwaite domain with husband Enoch off at war. Trouble brews when Bonel, one of the king's protected Jews, recruits Alix as a hostage to Germany where Richard the Lion Hearted is imprisoned. Homosexual King Richard finds himself once again attracted to Alix, the charming hoyden, and decides she must bear his needed heir to the throne. Alix's flight from this unwanted honor takes her to a nunnery that is a hotbed of erotic piety, then to a refuge with kindly, eccentric Sister Tiberga, who is both whore and healer. Richard's fanatic Spanish queen, Berengaria, persecutes Alix, but ultimately our heroine engages in a sporting interlude of courtly love with Richard before she discovers the perfidy of the Plantagenets. Details abound concerning the treatment of Jews, whose plight Alix seeks to alleviate. All told, this is another frothy, zany and irreverent medieval escapade that will delight readers who enjoyed Lady Alix's earlier misadventures. Sequel to "Shield of three Lions," I couldn't wait to read this one. Its a bit different than the last. Less of an adventure and more of a romance. Less talking and more FEELINGS.Starts off with a one-eyed jew who comes to collect Alix from her precious Wanthwaithe. Enoch has been injured and is away in Scotland. She tries to fight the jew, Bonel but of course has to go with him and once again meet up with King Richard.Man, this chick gets all the guys is all I'm gonna say!Everyone is madly in love with her---could it because she, as the main character, is utterly stunning with perfect white teeth? And her silvery halo of hair----on and on.This book was harder to pick up compared to the first. Its so into Richard and Alix. Its like, "I wonder what Richard is going to do today? When is he gonna get hit with that arrow?" etc.We interact with Queen Eleanor, too. Travel all of France's territories and are not in England much. Its a "middle book." Think of it as the "Empire Strikes BAck" or the "Two Towers."Compared to hopeful trilogies. I was hoping that the rerelease means that the author was going to put out a third book; but the first printing of this story was in 1986. It seems unlikely. So BE WARNED of two things when reading this book:THERE IS NO SEQUEL evidentTHE ENDING IS A CLIFF HANGER!!!!!But its good. And if you want to know the further adventures of Alix, sans Enoch, my recommendation is get it!

By A Customer "Banners of Gold" is a delightful sequal to "A shield of Lions" I think Pamela Kaufman is the best writer of historical fiction. Her novels not only present history in a intresting way, it entertains you just as well as watching a movie, because her story and characters are so alive. Her novel is filled with outrageously funny scenes and colorful discriptions of how life was like way back in the medieval times. This novel is a continuation of the first novel that is about a young woman named Aliex becoming an heiress due to an evil man who kills her family, to get back her land she journeys to King Richard disguised as a boy to ask for her land back and along the way she encounters much adventures as a boy whereas as a young girl she wouldn't have been able to. This second story is basically about the Aliex who goes looking for her husband This novel is also about her relationship with king Richard the I, his mother Eleanor of Aquitane, and a rich jewish lord.

By Jennifer Bullard First off, I have to say, I believe that this is a book very much geared towards females, not only because it revolves around a female as the main character, but because it has everything to do with love. The wonderful thing about this kind of love is that it is described with high school vividness...meaning that all of the loves described are new and fresh; every glance, every kiss stolen is enough to make their hearts burst...the wonder of new loves..ahhh...so wonderful to remember those times.Anyway...getting on to the main story, Alix is apparently a gorgeous woman, enough so that she gets just about every man that she encounters, but mostly because she attracts the eye of King Richard! She is the only woman who can help him make an heir, for the sole reason that she is the only woman he was ever attracted to. At first, she is unwilling to go along with his courtly love, being forced into something she was just not ready for at the tender age of 15. However, as the story goes along, she loosens up a bit at the prospect of being Richard's lover. And that's all I will say on that subject.Bonel was my favorite character, and in my humble opinion did not make enough of an appearance. The foreign Jew who comes for Alix at the beginning of the story, he has many, many layers that need unfolding, and I'm really not sure that we have even begun to scratch the surface on him, but you read the book and see what you think.Queen Eleanor and Prince John also play important roles in the story, as well as Queen Berengaria, however small her role was, it was omnipotent in many senses. Robin Hood also makes a small cameo appearance, though quite contrary to the usual Robin Hood tale. All in all, this book does integrate many historical facts and can make you feel as though you are in that time period, but at it's heart, it's all about love and despair. It's all about simple human emotions that transcend time and place. The only fault that I give this book, dropping it one star, is the cliffhanger it will leave you on...I need more...I need to know what happens next!
