In Helvik, a single rule governs the people: ‘No person of Helvik may kill another person of Helvik. Any person who breaks this rule is no longer a person of Helvik.’

Gunnarr remembers a time before the rule, when blood feuds and petty rivalries led to endless death. In the days since, an uneasy peace has fallen over the town, and Gunnarr has made himself the man to enforce it.

When an innocent friend suffers from a breach of the rule, Gunnarr rushes to deal retribution. Too late, he discovers that what appeared a mindless act was actually something far more sinister. And now he has left his unborn child and family unprotected, just when they need him most.

A vast host of warriors is at the gates of Helvik, and with Gunnarr gone, nothing and no one stands against them…

Very contained, with only a few hints as to a world beyond the central story arc, it offered a sense of claustrophobia that matched the closed-off, short-sighted and self-centred natures of the characters. This is an isolated community that has pulled itself from disaster by the personality of its leader, and his one rule. Reminded me a lot of the Crucible. The rule these people live by eventually tears them apart, helped along by a very charismatic antagonist in Olaf, whom I really enjoyed.Right from the get-go, Colman's writing pulled from me an attachment and a sympathy to these characters, which is very rare. Usually it takes me half a book to feel anything much for the people I'm reading about. The style trends away from modern fantasy, and the tone is masterfully rendered to give the impression of a chilly, desolate land echoing the hearts and minds of its inhabitants. Felt like I was reliving some hitherto undocumented moment in northern European history. This is a down to earth fantasy with more of an emphasis on character and tone, rather than action and adventure. This gives it a sense of realism that only adds to the depths of the characters, and the believability of their actions and situations. The cliff-top scene is perhaps one of the few scenes that buck this trend. Still, well-written and believable. I did feel that in some pivotal interaction sequences between the main players, the language and detail placed on their movements or specific internal reactions muddled and over-complicated matters, but again this is a very small gripe that didn't impinge on my experience. Tonally it's a fairly melancholic, sombre read. There are few moments of levity. You get the sense almost right from the beginning that you're spiralling down a tunnel with disaster the only possible outcome. It leave you slightly exasperated with the choices these characters make, and the futility of their very strenuous efforts to control and save their crumbling world, showing that Colman has represented their humanity well. I will say that the main character, Gunnarr, was an interesting one to pin down. A well rounded character to be sure, but his attachment to corpses was a little unsettling. I did not anticipate the end at all, but I won't spoil it.If you're after fantasy that's left of the mainstream, with a little more depth and thoughtfulness, then this one ticks all the boxes.
