Crosswind's PMP Study Guide is The Best - the Cat's Meow By Bill Baxter I've been using this book with my PMP® and CAPM® students for several years now, and they all agree it is great - much better than another study guide that is perhaps better known. This new edition, aligned with the 5th edition of the PMBOK®, is even better. For folks preparing for PMI's PMP® exam, Crosswind's study guide does several critical things: first, it explains the material found in the PMBOK® Guide with enough context to enable much better comprehension. Second, it includes the additional material that you need to know for the PMP® exam that is simply not covered in the PMBOK®. Third, it does all this in a clear, thorough way without excessive verbiage. Finally, it has 30 practice questions at the end of each chapter which are representative of what you can expect to see on the actual exam. The questions were good before, but they are even better now, in the 5th edition. They are one of the most valuable things about this book. Be sure to work through all of them. You will want to study the PMBOK® Guide itself, also. You are likely to see questions on the test where the word-for-word language found in the PMBOK® Guide needs to be recognized.Crosswind's Bootcamp Manual is the cat's meow. I recommend it to all my students. If you are trying to pass the PMP® exam, I recommend it to you too.Bill B.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good guide, not great software By S Young The study guide itself is good. The test interface/software is really terrible. When you take the practice tests, there's no way to see a list of the questions you got right and wrong - you have to go through each individually to find the ones you missed, with the explanation. You can't test on specific chapters or knowledge areas. I guess that if you buy the exam set separately it might be better? I don't know - I'm not willing to spend that much money to find out, and I can't easily tell if what came with the book is the same thing or something more. It's inexpensive compared to some of the competition, that's true, but very annoying to struggle with the software. The study guide is good, though - I like the layout and the coverage of the material. Maybe use this book and someone else's question software.

By Amazon Customer I can tell you that this was the best decision I have made during my PMP Prep. This book makes it a lot easier to deal with PMBOK and the questions are of top notch quality - the closest to the ones I saw during my exam. A must have for anyone preparing for PMP.

When the castle they called home is besieged and ultimately falls, five women are captured and carried off as wives by their foes. Will they be treated as no more than the spoils of war, or can their new lords prove themselves worthy of the love and submission of their conquered brides? The Conquered Brides is a five-book collection featuring these brand-new titles from top erotic romance authors: Commanding the Princess, by Korey Mae Johnson As the ruler of Hohenzollern Castle in name only, Susanna has watched helplessly for years as her power-hungry uncle made one enemy after another for her. One enemy stands out, and the moment she catches sight of him, Princess Susanna is certain that it will be Gerhard of Bavaria who brings her world down around her. As his army smashes through her gates, Susanna makes the only choice she has left. She surrenders herself to Gerhard, hoping to win mercy for her people, though she fears it will come at the cost of her life. But she soon learns that Gerhard has other plans for her, plans which may end with her surrendering much more than just her castle to him. The Knight’s Seduction, by Renee Rose Avowed to never again yield to a man’s ill-treatment, Lady Daisy stands ready to fight to the death when her castle is sacked. The imposing knight Sir Barrett has other ideas, however, and to her dismay, Daisy soon finds herself not only disarmed, but soundly spanked as well. Sir Barrett takes her as his captive bride, but when she shows real terror at the prospect of consummating their marriage, he offers her a bargain. She will offer her body to him and accept the pleasurable torments he inflicts, but he will not claim her fully until she aches for it so badly she begs him. Certain she will do no such thing, Daisy agrees, but can she resist the knight's seduction? The Widow Is Mine, by Ashe Barker Since her husband’s untimely passing, Lady Natalia has resigned herself to a quiet life as a young widow and perhaps one day as a nun. But when her adopted home is conquered by the enemy, her world is turned upside down. After he rescues her from the chaos of Hohenzollern’s fall, Duke Stefan of Richtenholst cannot imagine allowing Natalia to languish behind the walls of a convent. The duke takes Natalia home as his wife, and he quickly proves himself ready to compel her obedience when it is necessary, but can he ever truly make her his own? Conquering Lady Claire, by Sue Lyndon As Hohenzollern Castle falls, mayhem unfolds around Lady Claire, and her only aim is to lead as many women and children of the castle to safety as possible. In an odd turn of fortune, her courageous efforts ultimately lead to her capture by none other than Lord Galien of Minrova, the very man that her brother, a powerful duke, recently commanded to find her and claim her as his wife. Claire’s defiance is quickly overcome by means of a firm hand applied to her bare bottom, but Galien is not content merely going through the motions of a political marriage. His skilled lovemaking soon leaves his new bride begging for more, but can he conquer her heart as well? Kidnapped and Claimed, by Dinah McLeod When her husband’s repeated infidelities and drunken insults become too much to bear, Lady Cecily flees to her childhood home at Hohenzollern, but things quickly go from bad to worse and she is kidnapped from the castle stables only moments after her arrival. Cecily ignores her abductor’s warnings of ruin about to befall Hohenzollern and his claim that he took her from the castle only to keep her safe. She resists him every step of the way, until at last he spanks her long and hard. Despite his firm chastisement, it soon becomes clear to Cecily that her captor cares for her in a way her husband never did. But can she forgive him for stealing her from her home? Publisher’s Note: The Conquered Brides contains spankings, sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I read and loved each story in this box set By Mary Sue Wehr I read and loved each story in this box set. Each story had lots of spankings. (Woot!) And hot bed sport that'd make your toes curl. The heroes were strong, stern and oh so sexy men, but not bullies. The heroines had a lot of spunk, were headstrong and drove their men crazy with their shenanigans, but that's what I love in a romance. Conflict, sex and true love.I highly recommend this box set if heroes, who believe in old fashioned discipline, is your thing. It certainly is mine ;)

By julie beckford This is a very interesting tale that starts with a princess Susanna losing her castle do to the greed of her nasty uncle and what becomes of her and female friends and family members .and the deal she makes that the woman must be married instead of being raped and killed. Every single story by every author in this book is awesome. you have to give this book a read and go along on the ride of pleasure and spankings abound. great stories loved them all. Give this book a read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Collection of Middle Ages By Laurel This awesome collection of books by five gifted authors is wonderful. They all take place in the same area but each story is about what happens to each conquered bride. The overview tell all about each bride so I won't repeat. The brides include a princess and lady's in waiting and they are strong women who have to deal with circumstances beyond their control. Each storyline is well developed and very detailed as to costumes of that time period and descriptions of the surrounding countryside are so vivid they you can picture it and feel you are there. The dialog is amazing and I got caught up in the emotions of the characters. Korey Mae Johnson tell the story of Princess Susanna and if you have read any of her other stories you are in for a treat. Renee Rose, another wonderful author tells the story of Lady Daisy and having read other stories by Renee I love this new one. Ashe Barker is a new author to me and I recently read some of her other books and I have added her to my favorite author list. She writes about Lady Natalia and it's another terrific story. Next is the amazing Sue Lyndon whose books are always wonderful reads and she writes about Lady Claire who is another amazing woman who puts others safety ahead of her own. And last but definitely not least is the wonderful Dinah McLeod who is also one of my favorite writers. Whenever I see a new book by her I grab it, and I've never been disappointed. She writes about Lady Cecily who goes through some incredible hardships. If you like reading about Kings, Queens, Princesses, lords and ladies, Knights, knaves sprinkled with romance, danger, some violence, hot sex and spanking you will love this set which is a great bargin at half price.

In Helvik, a single rule governs the people: ‘No person of Helvik may kill another person of Helvik. Any person who breaks this rule is no longer a person of Helvik.’

Gunnarr remembers a time before the rule, when blood feuds and petty rivalries led to endless death. In the days since, an uneasy peace has fallen over the town, and Gunnarr has made himself the man to enforce it.

When an innocent friend suffers from a breach of the rule, Gunnarr rushes to deal retribution. Too late, he discovers that what appeared a mindless act was actually something far more sinister. And now he has left his unborn child and family unprotected, just when they need him most.

A vast host of warriors is at the gates of Helvik, and with Gunnarr gone, nothing and no one stands against them…

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding read. By stu kurth Odd that this only has one review. An accomplished novel, and a compelling read. Very contained, with only a few hints as to a world beyond the central story arc, it offered a sense of claustrophobia that matched the closed-off, short-sighted and self-centred natures of the characters. This is an isolated community that has pulled itself from disaster by the personality of its leader, and his one rule. Reminded me a lot of the Crucible. The rule these people live by eventually tears them apart, helped along by a very charismatic antagonist in Olaf, whom I really enjoyed.Right from the get-go, Colman's writing pulled from me an attachment and a sympathy to these characters, which is very rare. Usually it takes me half a book to feel anything much for the people I'm reading about. The style trends away from modern fantasy, and the tone is masterfully rendered to give the impression of a chilly, desolate land echoing the hearts and minds of its inhabitants. Felt like I was reliving some hitherto undocumented moment in northern European history. This is a down to earth fantasy with more of an emphasis on character and tone, rather than action and adventure. This gives it a sense of realism that only adds to the depths of the characters, and the believability of their actions and situations. The cliff-top scene is perhaps one of the few scenes that buck this trend. Still, well-written and believable. I did feel that in some pivotal interaction sequences between the main players, the language and detail placed on their movements or specific internal reactions muddled and over-complicated matters, but again this is a very small gripe that didn't impinge on my experience. Tonally it's a fairly melancholic, sombre read. There are few moments of levity. You get the sense almost right from the beginning that you're spiralling down a tunnel with disaster the only possible outcome. It leave you slightly exasperated with the choices these characters make, and the futility of their very strenuous efforts to control and save their crumbling world, showing that Colman has represented their humanity well. I will say that the main character, Gunnarr, was an interesting one to pin down. A well rounded character to be sure, but his attachment to corpses was a little unsettling. I did not anticipate the end at all, but I won't spoil it.If you're after fantasy that's left of the mainstream, with a little more depth and thoughtfulness, then this one ticks all the boxes.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Richard III is a historical play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in approximately 1592. It depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequent short reign of Richard III of England. The play is grouped among the histories in the First Folio and is most often classified as such. Occasionally, however, as in the quarto edition, it is termed a tragedy. Richard III concludes Shakespeare's first tetralogy (also containing Henry VI parts 1–3). It is the second longest play in the canon after Hamlet, and is the longest of the First Folio, whose version of Hamlet is shorter than its Quarto counterpart. The play is rarely performed unabridged; often, certain peripheral characters are removed entirely. In such instances extra lines are often invented or added from elsewhere in the sequence to establish the nature of characters' relationships. A further reason for abridgment is that Shakespeare assumed that his audiences would be familiar with the Henry VI plays, and frequently made indirect references to events in them, such as Richard's murder of Henry VI or the defeat of Henry's queen, Margaret.

Feinman This edition has one of the best introductions I've read: informative, well-written and with photos from productions of R III. Just the section on Macbeth and Richard makes this top-notch. Even the Folio/Quarto stuff is interesting -- short and not pedantic. This is my choice for Richard III edition.

By meiringen Stephens is a bit much as Richard (does he have to yell so often?) but the supporting cast, with Michael York in a multitude of roles, Dame Peggy Ashcroft as Margaret, Glenda Jackson as Lady Anne and Jeremy Brett as the Earl of Clarence (for once, the part is done right--Brett comes off as believable, not as a whiny brat as in many portrayals) is fantastic. Unabridged, as another reviewer noted, and digitally remastered, this recording is the best I've come across so far. Highly recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good copy By Amoeba I bought this book because while we had covered Richard II and Henry IV (Pt. 1) in my Shakespeare class, we did not read Richard III (my prof. just wasn't a huge fan). I love Shakespeare's history plays, and the discovery of Richard III's body sparked my interest. The copy is quality, contains plenty of footnotes (and a lengthy introduction) for a student or someone new to Shakespeare. The translation is good. I like the story even though I know some people that find it too far fetched in a few aspects. After all, this is a Shakespeare play...it's not made to be accurate or realistic. It's made to please the monarch and the monarch's censors. The only downside is that sometimes there are so many notes on a page that there's very little play text. It's similar to what happens with study KJV Bibles, or study copies of almost anything written in middle or early-modern English. So, excellent for a student or someone that likes those extra notes, but if you're adept when it comes to Shakespeare or are used to reading works in early-modern English, then it may be cumbersome for you. Personally, I liked all the notes because I'm out of college, and without them I'd have to google anything I needed some context on. They're also nice for lending to others.

Our Study Guide for the CHMM Test Is Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the CHMM test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the CHMM test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game so you can become a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the CHMM Test is written by our CHMM test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the CHMM test. Our original research into the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Examination, offered by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the CHMM test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the CHMM test.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the CHMM test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the CHMM test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the CHMM test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the CHMM test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the CHMM test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the CHMM test...

  • How to "milk the question" for clues to the right answer even if you have no idea what the question is asking about
  • How to avoid panicking when you don't know the answer to a question- we offer a systematic method that will serve as the "lifeline" you need to minimize the time wasted on the test questions that leave you stumped --
  • What to do about the tough questions that you have no clue how to answer- don't just give up, use the advice we offer to make sure you give yourself the best chance of getting the right answer
  • How to use our brainstorming method to get "inside the question" and reveal the hard-to-find clues and some of the subtle things you didn't realize you knew
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.

I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I had ZERO preparation! I was nervous about the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Brian

I heard about your website from a friend. I am enrolled in a review course, and in hindsight, I wish I wouldn't have taken my review course and instead spent a fraction of the money on your program. Thank you! Zac L.

Taking a test can be hazardous By Norm Jordan As someone studying for certification on hazardous materials and how to manage them, I know what hazardous means. And I can honestly say that tests are hazardous to me. I've never done well on standardized tests, even when I feel like I studied pretty hard. This, however, was one test I couldn't afford to mess up. When I found this study guide, I had a glimmer of hope that I might be able to turn things around for myself. I looked over the guide and first took the test taking tips to heart. There were a lot of things that I had been doing wrong in the past that I hoped would really help me turn things around on this test. Then, I went through the material the guide offered and found it comprehensive. I couldn't think of anything else I might need to know for the exam. Once I knew the material in the guide, I felt confident that I would do well. Now, I feel that tests are the least hazardous part of my future job. I hope that if I can prepare for each job well, there won't be any hazards there either.

It tackles the following topics: Recognize and Characterize Materials, Assess Risks: Hazardous Materials, Mitigate and/ or Eliminate Material Hazard, Manage Impact on the Environment, Manage Impact on Human Health, Ensure Regulatory Compliance, and Manage Hazardous Materials and Business. Aside from those topics, it also has the test taking tips and tricks that are very useful. It gives as well the general strategies and secrets to success for you to be able to ace the test. This book seems to have everything you need to be prepared on the exam. Each topic was discussed using simple words and it is very direct to the point. The reader will never be confused. It differentiates topics in an easy way for you to be able to get what is the main difference between them. It also has practice test which is composed of 50 questions although it seems to be very few especially for those people who loves to answer a lot of practice test before taking the exam, still this is already a good help in evaluating yourself. What are also good here in practice test are the explanations to the answers because it helps the reader to retain the questions and the correct answers in their mind. It is superb that you will be able to use the tips and tricks in the practice test to choose the correct answer. There are a lot of things that one would learn in reading this book. That is why it is really a gift because it seems to be complete. Aside from the secrets to success, its general strategies are very useful in terms on handling the exam and on choosing the correct answers. Because this will tell you on how to handle tough questions, on how to eliminate answers, avoid “fact traps”, benchmark, make predictions and a lot more. In addition to that is the additional bonus material, which contains study secrets that is a key to effective studying, and how to overcome test anxiety which is very useful in preparing yourself to face the exam because most of the test takers feel some level of anxiety. This will help on how you’ll be able to manage it and how it can help you to ace the test instead of being controlled by your anxiety.

It was the biggest funeral Chicago had seen since Lincoln’s. On May 26, 1889, four thousand mourners proceeded down Michigan Avenue, followed by a crowd forty thousand strong, in a howl of protest at what commentators called one of the ghastliest and most curious crimes in civilized history. The dead man, Dr. P. H. Cronin, was a respected Irish physician, but his brutal murder uncovered a web of intrigue, secrecy, and corruption that stretched across the United States and far beyond.Blood Runs Green tells the story of Cronin’s murder from the police investigation to the trial. It is a story of hotheaded journalists in pursuit of sensational crimes, of a bungling police force riddled with informers and spies, and of a secret revolutionary society determined to free Ireland but succeeding only in tearing itself apart. It is also the story of a booming immigrant population clamoring for power at a time of unprecedented change. From backrooms to courtrooms, historian Gillian O’Brien deftly navigates the complexities of Irish Chicago, bringing to life a rich cast of characters and tracing the spectacular rise and fall of the secret Irish American society Clan na Gael. She draws on real-life accounts and sources from the United States, Ireland, and Britain to cast new light on Clan na Gael and reveal how Irish republicanism swept across the United States. Destined to be a true crime classic, Blood Runs Green is an enthralling tale of a murder that captivated the world and reverberated through society long after the coffin closed.

Blood Runs Green: The Murder That Transfixed Gilded Age Chicago (Historical Studies of Urban America), by Gillian O'Brien

Review "Chicago's reputation for dramatic crime and corruption predates Al Capone and Prohibition—by decades. In May 1889 Dr. P. H. Cronin, an esteemed physician, was found in a sewer. He was naked, dead, and savagely beaten. The investigation and trial caused an international sensation, and one of the world's first media circuses, over a story that involved Irish revolutionaries and reactionaries, secret societies, and even a French spy. . . . All at a time when Chicago had been burned down, and was reborn as the fast-growing city in America." (Scott Simon NPR's Weekend Edition)"The grisly murder of the Irish-American politician Patrick Henry Cronin, in 1889, captivated the city of Chicago: his body, naked and disfigured, was pulled out of a sewer, and thousands marched in his funeral procession. This history sets the incident against the development of the Irish Republican movement in the United States, which gave money and tactical support to the cause of Irish independence. After Cronin’s death, the city’s secretive Irish societies came under intense scrutiny, and the public, spurred by a sensationalist press, declared them to be unseemly, dangerous, and unpatriotic." (New Yorker)"O’Brien’s meticulously researched book makes the case that one man’s brutal murder in 1889 Chicago (and the subsequent criminal investigation) had a ripple effect in both America and Britain on the contentious cause of Irish republicanism. . . . This is academic writing at its most accessible.?” (New York Times)"O’Brien paints a vivid picture of what was then the longest-running trial in US history with a verve that would make John Grisham and company green with envy. . . . Blood Runs Green is all that’s best in academic writing: detailed research, accessible writing—and a rattling good yarn. It certainly kept me turning the pages like the best crime novel." (Times Higher Education)"Blood Runs Green is the first book in more than a century to examine Cronin’s execution-style killing and the trial of five men on charges of conspiracy to murder. Gillian O’Brien’s retelling of this pivotal yet almost forgotten story is worth the wait. . . . With a thoroughness and insight worthy of an academic Sherlock Holmes, O’Brien has mined newspaper accounts, court records and archives in Ireland, Britain and the US to breathe life into the people and events connected to the case." (Irish Times)"Ambitiously delivers a complex tale of international terrorism and fraud." (Library Journal)"The 1889 murder of Patrick Henry Cronin, an Irish-American physician and political activist, was one of the great scandals of late 19th-century US public life. O’Brien . . . recounts the story with enormous verve and gripping detail." (Best Books of 2015 Financial Times)"O'Brien takes a fresh and compelling look at the case, exploring its origins in a disastrous dispute among Irish nationalists over how to fight the British oppression of their homeland. . . . The book left me thinking about even broader questions. Amid our latest national debates on race and justice, I wondered if anything has fundamentally changed about our appetite for heroes, villains, and instant judgments.” (Chicago Reader)"Deftly puts the complicated case in context, showing just how intertwined the histories of Chicago and Ireland are." (Robert Loerzel Chicago Magazine)" A fascinating story very well told." (Books Ireland)"Page-turning. . . . In retelling a tale that for years captured the attention of Chicagoans as well as international readers, O’Brien has shared a slice of history that had long-lasting and far-reaching implications. Thoroughly researched and well told, Blood Runs Green is a timeless story that deftly captures the feel of an era.” (Chicago Book Review)“Who was Dr. Patrick Cronin and who murdered him? To find out you must dive into O’Brien’s dark, fascinating tale of 1880s Chicago. This true-life whodunit captures the Second City at a key moment in its history as it weaves through sensation-seeking journalists, wild-eyed Irish nationalists and, of course, corrupt police officers. An enlightening and entertaining read.” (Douglas Perry, author of The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers Who Inspired Chicago)"O’Brien does a wonderful job of placing the sensational 1889 murder of Dr. Patrick Henry Cronin firmly within the history of nineteenth century Irish Chicago, as well as within the political machinations of the city, the Clan na Gael, Ireland, and the Catholic Church. Blood Runs Green is a lively tale of intrigue, murder, and the Gilded Age in the fastest growing city of nineteenth century America." (Dominic A. Pacyga, author of Chicago: A Biography)"For connoisseurs of Gilded Age America, Gillian O’Brien’s book has everything: a ghastly murder of a respected medical doctor, police incompetence and probably corruption, deadly Irish American splits and rivalries, more than a hint of international terrorism in the background, a British government informer, and above all, an unforgettable portrait of the pulsating city of Chicago, with the dogs of its print media let slip in full hue and cry for a culprit, any culprit. Not to be missed." (Thomas Bartlett, University of Aberdeen)"This thoroughly researched account of a sordid episode in Irish-American history is as engaging as a good thriller." (The Tablet)"O’Brien has rescued this story from obscurity in this carefully researched and clearly written book. In doing so, she gives the complex international politics a human face and helps readers understand how a thuggish act of brutality could roil trans-Atlantic diplomacy for decades." (Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books)"In the process of dissecting and analyzing one of the most notorious murder cases of the late nineteenth century Gillian O’Brien has illuminated not only the subterranean world of the Irish nationalist revolutionaries of the Clan na Gael but also many aspects of the broader story of Irish American Chicago. The book is meticulously researched and elegantly written—a star in the social history of the immigrant group, the movement, the period, and the city." (James R. Barrett, author of The Irish Way: Becoming American in the Multi-Ethnic City)"O’Brien’s detailed account is a testament to what good, well-written history can be:  interesting, spell-binding, instructive, and thought-provoking all at once. Blood Runs Green is a tale well and skillfully told." (Look at Books)“A fascinating account of time and place for both academic and general readers alike: well written and paced, it sheds valuable light on a key moment in Irish American history that has until now remained mostly overlooked.” (Irish Studies Review)

I got my copy last night and just now finished it. Blood Runs Green is my favorite type of book - one that has its focus on a particular individual or event in history, but while the author is taking you through that narrative, as O'Brien does here, also tells the story of the age and captures the social, cultural, and political milieu of the times. It very much reminded me of other books I've read by authors such as Erik Larson (Devil in the White City; In the Garden of Beasts) and Candice Millard (Destiny of the Republic). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Chicago, Irish-American history (just in time for St. Patrick's Day, I might add), or just a great read. I'm already looking forward to whatever O'Brien does next.

Great Hidden History By G.I Gurdjieff I bought this a little late for St. Patrick's Day, but this was a terrific book about the Irish Republican Movement, how it was manifested in large cities in the United States, and a secret society named Clan ne Gael.I had always assumed Irish immigration and the large enclaves of the Irish populated places like New York City and Boston. Chicago was to me always small in terms of the Irish despite the Irish surnames that seemingly controlled the city during the 19th century moving forward. This book is centered on a monumental death of a Dr. Cronin, who aspired to be a prominent leader in Clan ne Gael. Well known and respected in the Irish community, his badly beaten and decomposing body was found nude stuffed in a sewer. The doctor had gone missing four days earlier and had not the smell of decomposition attracted attention he might never have been found that might have been the end of the story. However, a crowd of 4,000 crowded Holy Name Cathedral and another 40,000 people crowded the streets as the funeral cortège made its way through the city. This funeral rivaled the crowd that came to observe the showing of Abraham Lincoln on its way home to Soringfield some 25 years earlier.Having lived in the Chicago area for a good portion of my life, this story was something I had never heard of though it has a certain resemblance to stories about corruption, bungled police investigations, and a cast of shifty characters including one named Sullivan who had quite a checkered past of his own until he reinvented himself in Chicago. This is a terrific story about Windy City corruption, shady police work, and an interesting who done it that makes for not only great reading from a crime standpoint but also from the perspective of early social development as it spread not only to Chicago but other large cities in the Midwest and Eastern parts of the United States.Author Gillian O'Brien has created a story that rivals the work of Erik Larson and Candace Millard that takes a seemingly small piece of history and when put under a microscope that explodes in not only detail but in scope. Riveting throughout, this is a very interesting book that is both a crime book as well as a journey into history.

I appreciate that there was a lot of research done, but the narrative is overly detailed with some info & somewhat lacking in other areas. There are an excessive number of verbatim newspaper passages which, in some cases, are just different takes on the same information. Clan na Gael & Irish nationalist groups dominate the story while specifics about the murder investigation and trial are a little scant. There is no actual trial testimony, but it is briefly summarized in the narrative and told, again, through newspaper quotes. Very little is told of the good doctor. What exactly did he do (other than be murdered) that endeared him to so many thousands? This is still a good book and I would recommend it. It would have been a better read for me if the research had been disseminated a little better.

Besides the test-taking tips (most were pretty obvious) and the practice test, it was lists of definitions to read. Honestly, I didn't even read it cover to cover, it was so boring. However, I did take the practice test and believe that that was very helpful seen as it has been years since I have taken a test). The practice test does not include the areas of science, geography and history, which was defintiely a surprise when I opened my real test booklet on exam day. Also, the practice test included an essay section which WAS NOT on the real test.

Best PDF Ebook Online Fatal Majesty: A Novel of Mary Queen of Scots, by Reay Tannahill

In Fatal Majesty, critically acclaimed novelist Reay Tannahill immerses readers in the tragedy of Mary, Queen of Scots-but this is not a conventional retelling of a fascinating yet familiar tale.Eighteen-year-old Mary returns from the sophisticated French court to claim her throne in cold, backward Scotland. A gloomy reception proves least among the na?ve young monarch's challenges: her arrival provides the opportunity for smoldering vendettas to explode and for intricate conspiracies to form and then unravel-intrigue besets her on every side. Mary's self-righteous brother, James, seeks to rule in her place; her brilliant Secretary of State, Lethington, dedicates his energies to placing the Stuarts on the throne of England; and her cousin, Elizabeth I, dazzling and unscrupulous, fears Mary as a threat to her crown and to her life.Mingling a poet's passion with an historian's insight, Tannahill chronicles an era of easy violence, desperate action, and grand conspiracy. In Fatal Majesty, masterful characterization combines with lightning pace and classic plotting to deliver a tragic romantic saga with all the complexity of a major political thriller.

Fatal Majesty: A Novel of Mary Queen of Scots, by Reay Tannahill

From Publishers Weekly The life of Mary Queen of Scots, from the age of 18 until her death at the hands of her cousin, Elizabeth I, provides the framework for Scottish author Tannahill's (A Dark and Distant Shore) latest novel. Instead of focusing on the personalities of the martyred queen and her formidable English rival, the author has chosen to document the complicated political machinations that led to Mary's downfall. The religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants throughout Europe at that time, the thorny issue of "divine right" and succession to the throne, and the myriad plots, counterplots and counter-counter plots are ponderously explicated here, undermining the vitality of the central character. The precarious motives and positions of those who critically figured in the schemes to maneuver the destiny of England and Scotland are compelling, but these tensions deflate in Tannahill's dense prose. The reader gets a broad sense of the way 16th-century monarchies operated: how Mary, pronounced queen at the age of six months, was a symbolic pawn in the hands of feuding powermongers, mostly men. The crux of the historical tale is that Elizabeth I becomes Mary's fatal nemesis, but there is a surprisingly dispassionate handling of the emotions and thoughts of these two powerful, vulnerable women and the people who loved and/or manipulated them. With the exception of Mary's secretary of state, Lethington, whose personal life and crucial role as a political adviser are well drawn, most of the characters are not persuasively rendered. Occasional glimpses of Mary's personality shine through: her naivete as a young woman when she first comes to rule Scotland, her thwarted romances and her attempts at self-determination. Elizabeth's defensive calculations are a fascinating counterpoint, but Tannahill withholds what a novelization of this famous drama should promise, and gives us instead a heavy load of densely woven facts that read more like a research text than a novel.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Readers hoping for a fictionalized biography of Mary Queen of Scots on the level of Margaret George's Mary Queen of Scotland & the Isles: A Novel (LJ 8/92) will be disappointed. Focusing primarily on the "political intrigues" surrounding Mary after her return to Scotland, this narrative lacks the complexity that made George's account so engrossing. The characters are wooden and unsympathetic, and there is little insight into Mary herself, who often seems peripheral to her own story. Although Tannahill (Return of the Stranger, LJ 4/1/96) does set the social and political scene, she pays more attention to Elizabeth I's motivations (seen through Scottish eyes) than to those of Mary or any of the Scottish nobles. Readers eager for anything about Mary and her times will probably want this; others want to look elsewhere.?Karen E. Sadowski, Simmons Coll., BostonCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Tannahill's sixth novel is sure to delight fans of historical drama. It's 1561, and Mary, the 18-year-old queen of Scots, has returned from France to assume the throne of her native Scotland. Many people are not too pleased about this turn of events: Mary's brother, James; her secretary of state, Lethington; even Elizabeth, the English queen who worries that Mary might have her sights set on the throne of England. What follows--the novel spans about a quarter of a century--is a story of almost diabolical intricacy, a based-on-fact thriller that pits a young woman against some of the sharpest political minds of their time. The outcome of this story is not a mystery--everyone knows Mary was beheaded--so Tannahill instead spends her time building up to it: detailing the relationships between the various players, revealing the rather nasty underbelly of the political animal, turning this historical drama into a wonderfully complex story that will keep readers captivated until the very end. Tannahill approaches the material with the care and attention to detail of a historian (in addition to her novels, she's written three works of nonfiction). Placing her characters against an accurate, immensely detailed backdrop, she makes the sixteenth century seems as real as yesterday. David Pitt

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. A royal disappointment. By A Customer I've long been fascinated by the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, so I was looking forward to reading this new novel. I can't say I thought much of it, however. The style rather reminds me of those paperback romances you find at airport terminals and supermarket checkout lines, and the history, while accurate in spots, seems mostly taken from Antonia Fraser's silly biography of Mary. In other words, our heroine comes off as a brainless sap who seemingly deserved to be pitched off her throne. Having a protagonist you want to give a good slap to does not make for pleasant reading. My main annoyance with the book, however, was Tannahill's cliched treatment of Mary's third husband, the Earl of Bothwell. Going against all the objective historical evidence, Tannahill gives us the tired old tale of Bothwell as Border ruffian who, after blowing Mary's previous husband up with gunpowder, then takes it into his head to kidnap, rape, and coerce Mary into an unwanted marriage with him. Spare me. I was hoping most reputable authors had gotten past that by now. In truth, Bothwell deserved to be the hero of Tannahill's work, and the fact that he wasn't leaves the book with a certain lack of credibility to me. (I'll admit, I'm prejudiced on that point. I feel about Bothwell rather the way Richard III Society members feel about that monarch.)

Not bad, but frustrating By A Customer The book started out fairly well I thought, although being an avid "fan" of Mary Queen of Scots I kept noticing little details here and there where I was thinking "That didn't really happen like that" or "This could really have been expanded on". I found this latter one particularly grating at the end, where Mary is imprisoned and years slide by so quickly one can hardly get a feel for the isolation she must have felt. And her death at the end I thought should have been more emotional...though I did like the one sequence of Elizabeth and the "scream". The one point on which I completely agree with the reader from Canoga Park is Tannahill's treatment of Bothwell. Initially I thought he was going to be characterized positively, but then he became the murderous, uncivilized lout that I also thought historians had done well to disprove now...and the "kidnapping and rape" was in actuality almost certainly done with Mary's collusion. Tannahill also takes Antonia Fraser's tremulous view that Mary had been five weeks pregnant at the time of her miscarriage, and not five months, which was initially reported and far more likely...because this would prove that she did indeed have an adulterous affair with Bothwell. Instead of putting in the entirely probable romance between Mary and Bothwell, Tannahill tacks on details about the relationship between Lethington and Mary Fleming, which I was only mildly interested in at best. I guess this was to substitute for the total lack of love she portrayed in Mary's life, but it didn't work for me and left me feeling really unsatisfied.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An absorbing, but distant, look at Mary, Queen of Scots By Susan Higginbotham Reay Tannahill's Fatal Majesty is about Mary, Queen of Scots, and I liked it even better than The Seventh Son. It's written in a similar style, with a very dry, sardonic tone to the narration.Fatal Majesty switches back and forth between the English court and the Scottish court, and has a very wide cast of characters--wide enough, in fact, to be rather confusing for someone who isn't intimately familiar with the main players of the time. Most of the characters act entirely in their own self-interest, like so many spiders spinning their webs, and it is the convergence of these webs that eventually engulfs and destroys Mary.Though Tannahill is sympathetic toward Mary, one gets a sense of distance, especially in the latter half of the novel. Indeed, Tannahill's favorite character seems to be Mary's Secretary of State, Lethington, which gives rise to what I thought was the novel's major flaw: once Lethington makes his final exit, Tannahill becomes far less engaged with her material, making the last fifty pages a bit of chore to get through. Tannahill covers thirty years in those fifty pages, and although there's a lot of intrigue packed in those years and pages, I found myself skimming. Worse, Mary herself appears only occasionally in them. That may have been to drive home the point that she was little more than the pawn of others during that time, but I would have liked to have seen more of Mary nonetheless. Still, this is a 450-plus-page novel, and the pleasure of reading the first 400 pages, packed full of excellent characterizations and dry wit, more than makes up for the relative weakness of the last fifty pages.
