When my best friend, Jill, called me seemingly out of the blue one night, I thought she just wanted some girl time. I thought she just wanted to cheer me up. I had lost my job, and my perfect boyfriend, Ben, was spending so much time working he didn't have any time for me. Little did I know what she had in store for us that night...When I arrived, my normally put together best friend seemed shy and nervous. Ben and I were in a dry spell, and I couldn't help but notice how hot she looked and the way her tattoos peeked out from underneath her sweater. Our normal easy conversation was full of tension, and I noticed for the first time just how sexy my best friend was. Then dessert arrived, infused with a love spell that allowed me to see myself as Jill saw me. It was the ultimate aphrodisiac, seeing my best friend's memories of fantasizing about me. What surprised me was just how bad I wanted her, too. This is part one of a four-part serialized Fantasy Erotic Romance. This part has a length of about 15,000 words. It contains strong sexual content and is not intended for readers under 18.If you love erotic fantasy romance novels, Scroll Up and Grab a Copy Today!

The beginning grounds us firmly in Claudia's life and her sexual frustration as she struggles with job loss while her boyfriend works more than time and a half to try and keep them both afloat. Ben, Claudia's boyfriend, is a really sweet guy who loves Claudia enough to surreptitiously pave the way for her to explore some of her own hidden fantasies. What follows is a sweet and spicy romp of sexual exploration that definitely hits all of the right buttons. I'm really excited to read the next in the series, and I'm definitely going to follow more of this authors work! Great read!

I've gotta say, there's something sexy cooking in the kitchen! This book is DEElicious in all the right ways. So Claudia's in a rut, but her boyfriend and best friend have some hot and steamy ideas to help her out of it, if you get what I mean. Ben and Jill are both equally hot and sexy in their own ways, and the whole thing left me so hungry for more! Not to mention, it was so refreshing to read a sex-positive book with a bisexual main character who is exploring her attraction to women. I can't wait to read the next one in this series!

A very spicy beginning By Amazon Customer What is unique about this book is the fact that the witch will do nothing unless all parties involved are truly consenting. This adds to the eroticism. Hopefully in the second book we get to see what happens when she gives Ben the cake.

Best PDF Ebook American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio's River, by Lewis F. Fisher

In American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River, Lewis F. Fisher uncovers the evolution of San Antonio’s beloved River Walk. He shares how San Antonians refused to give up on the vital water source that provided for them from before the city’s beginnings. In 1941 neglect, civic uprisings, and bursts of creativity culminated in the completion of a Works Projects Administration project designed by Robert H. H. Hugman. The resulting River Walk languished for years but enjoyed renewed interest during the 1968 World’s Fair, held in San Antonio, and has since become the center of the city’s cultural and historical narrative.“The real story [of the River Walk] is a bit less Hollywood but far more interesting . . . With a growing number of cities facing issues of water supply, urban runoff, flooding, and ways of rebuilding better after a disaster, the San Antonio River Walk remains a great example of getting it right,” writes Irby Hightower, co-chair of the San Antonio River Oversight Committee. In this updated and expanded edition of River Walk: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River, Fisher offers more fascinating stories about the River Walk’s evolution, bringing to light new facts and sharing historical images that he has since discovered. The update includes information about the Museum and Mission Reaches, two expansions of the River Walk that are vital to San Antonio’s continued growth as the seventh largest city in the country.Fisher starts his story with the first written records of the river, in the 1690s, and continues through the 1800s and the flood of 1921, to debates over transforming the river and its eventual role as the crown jewel of Texas, and finally to its recent expansion. More than a community attraction, the River Walk’s banks are also a giant botanical garden full of plants and trees. Indeed, the American Society for Horticulture has named the River Walk a Horticultural Landmark. As Fisher says, the River Walk “remains a work in progress, one forever precarious and unfinished yet standing before the world as a triumph of enterprise and human imagination.”

What has become a beautiful asset for San Antonio drawing tourists and locals alike faced complete annihilation multiple times by developers just wanting the land. It took people with vision and political fight to make it what it is. An interesting read with great historical photos.

Samuels This book is a fantastic written history of the San Antonio Riverwalk and the surrounding downtown area. The level of detail and the story telling style of this author is top notch. If you are a history buff and enjoy honest telling of how things came to be, this is the book for you. It is niether overly technical, heavy on minutiae or heavy handed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is a must have for the proud San Antonian, inquisitive visitor, or anyone who enjoys a gorgeous retelling of history.

The book would have been so much better if the author showed the evolution of the shape of the San Antonio River and the Riverwalk over the last century.

Initialy thinking of simply having it on my shelf for a reference, I find it a fascinating and enjoyable read.Taylor offers details along with overview of this formative, 35-year period. For example, on the battle of Bicocca, Taylor mentions: "The front of the Imperial Army which was protected by a sunken road, consisted of four ranks of arquebusiers, mainly Spanish, with German pikemen massed immediately behind them, The arquebusiers were instructed by Pescara to hold their fire until the advancing Swiss were at close range; then, when he gave the signal, each rank was to shoot in turn and to reload in a kneeling posture in order to leave a clear field of fire for the ranks behind." And: "Giovanni de' Medici, who undertook this task with a mixed force of cavary and arqubusiers, found his movements hampered by the slowness of his unmounted troops. Hitherto such a difficulty had been overcome on special occasions by mouting infantry on the crupper behind light cavalry. Taught by his experience at Bicocca, Giovani now began to mount a proportion of arquebusiers on horses of little value and to mix them with his cavalry; when they came into action they dismounted and fought as footsoldiers." Plus this: "...there came the modern view of war as a means to a political end. Commanders look beyond victory to the fruits of victory. They fight not for glory but for the possession of Italy."The book was originally published by Cambridge Press in 1921 and apparently its copyright elapsed, hence, Forgotten Press reviving it. It's only 228 pages long with larger-than-average type, written in an engaging style.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. nice overview of little-known history By Ron Braithwaite I purchased this book as a research tool for my two novels--"Skull Rack" and "Hummingbird God"--covering the Italian Wars, the Second Inquisition and, especially, the Conquest of Mexico.Spanish mercenaries were prominent in the shifting alliances and wars that characterized renaissance Italy. The Spaniards were regarded as "the best" and it is no accident that many of these same mercenaries found their way to the Americas to fight against the natives. Cortez, himself, valued his "Italian" fighters above all others because they were the only troops that had formal military training. The story is as confusing as were the events themselves. French, Germans, Swiss, Spaniards, Italians and other nationalities locked together in seemingly pointless conflicts. He who paid the most, got the most troops and usually won. Frequently bloodshed wasn't even necessary. It was sometimes more of a chess match than a killing ground. Still, there was plenty of killing. Aristocrats were oftentimes ransomed whereas peasants faced execution. Woodcuts of the period often show dozens of defeated soldiers hanging from available trees.Anyway, I found the book useful and informative and I'd recommend it for those interested in Renaissance warfare and the Spanish conquest of the Americas.Ron Braithwaite, author of novels--"Skull Rack" and "Hummingbird God"--on the Spanish Conquest of Mexico

The Evolution of Washington, DC is a striking volume featuring select pieces of the extraordinary collection of Washingtoniana donated by Albert H. Small to the George Washington University in 2011. It showcases treasures such as an 1860 lithograph of the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson in front of the White House and a contemporary print of old Potomac River steamboats. Other unique pieces include early designs for the White House, the Capitol, and the Washington Monument as well as presidential portraits and Civil War memorabilia. Each object--from architectural plans and topographical maps to letters and advertisements--tells a fascinating story, and together they illustrate the history of our nation's capital and indeed our nation itself.

Not up to her usual standard By KP The start and end of the book were okay with the story developing and concluding, however the middle of the book read more like porn than erotica. It was repetitive and tedious. Usually Tymber Dalton makes her scenes more interesting, but in this book it felt like the plot took second place and the rest was padding.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heart grabbing. By Trish Heart grabbing. Absolutely heart grabbing. I haven't been this emotionally involved in a book in a while. Noel is one strong woman to go through all that. Scott's coming out turns out to be the best thing that could happen. Keith's open mind and big heart made this all come together as it should.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good Turn of the Screw By Angela (Spoiler Alert)This was a really good book. Noel has spent the past two years of her ten-year marriage to Scott trying to be his Domme after he admits he thinks he's gay and knows he's kinky. When she gives him permission to go be happy, to find a guy who can take care of his needs, he meets Keith. Scott goes away to a kink weekend he feels bad and guilty because while he's away to play he meets Keith who is also looking for a good time, but Keith is not just looking for a one stand Keith is a Dom and a sadist and looking for a partner. Noel who doesn't want to lose her husband although she wants him to be happy even if it made her unhappy. When Scott agrees to play with Keith he realizes what he has been missing and what it means for Noel. Keith doesn't know what to think he wants Scott and he is willing to share him with Noel for now. This was a really good book it was well written with no errors in spelling or grammar like all of Tymber's books. I liked the fact that it was important to Keith to talk to Noel before he became more involved with Scott. This book had all kinds of kinky sex in it I mean hot! When their is a problem with Keith's rental house so Noel offers to let him move in with them she even gave up her bedroom to them (I wouldn't done it). Noel realizes that she wanted Scott to be the dominant type so when a storm comes leaving Keith and Noel alone with alcohol she speaks her mind. When Keith and Noel hook up with Scott's blessing sparks fly and Keith realizes what Noel needs and she was a sub. I love reading this series and the people of the Suncoast Society and people like Tilly who helped Noel when she was worried about being poly. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. I have not read all of the books in order because each book can be read as a stand alone. If you like reading about BDSM with a mix of couples than I would recommend that you read this series.

The story-within-a-story continues ...

The story-within-a-story continues and a sequence of stunning revelations unfolds in Epiphany’s gripping conclusion. The 2008 Global Financial Crisis is looming, a time of losses for some in Rosetta’s circle, and the odd astonishing gain. Via the path of mystery, reversals in fortunes and romantic love, Rosetta and her book club unwittingly get involved in a quest for The Silvering: an epoch rumoured to begin in 2019. The world's concept of worth, however, is keeping alive the Cycle of Suffering that body-kings began in the ancient past … and the chance for a brighter future is fading fast. Beneath the red soil of a southern land lies a glimmer of hope — a legacy of Norwegian forest-dwellers — destined to bring about a worldwide epiphany … but only if two people from two very different standpoints can settle their differences in time to fulfil Lillibridge’s mystifying prophecy. Discoveries made about Edward Lillibridge in the British village of Tintagel, letters he wrote to his sister and son, unite Matthew and Rosetta in their desire to glean facts, but between them stands a wall of mistrust that threatens the sprites' noble plans. Each letter adds yet another detail to the tapestry of Lillibridge’s 18th-century existence, and Matthew is confronted with an uncanny truth that challenges his perceptions of life and death.

What readers are saying on Amazon's international sites ...

A wonderful sequel to the first book, a fascinating journey through time ... CillaWilson Australia I recently read and reviewed Terry’s debut and first novel in this series, so my eagerness to read the follow up was a mix of equal parts excitement and trepidation, trepidation because after being so overwhelmed by the first book I was worried she wouldn't be able to carry on in such a successful way. Well, now I’ve read it I know I needn't have worried as The Silvering is every bit the knockout! The story continues on in the same intricate but well plotted manner without tailing off like some two-novel series do. It also doesn’t have the dragged out feel of others which just seem like a ploy to get the reader to buy two books when one would have been sufficient. If you’re reading this then I guess you’ve already read the first novel, so waste no more time and find out for yourself! Rosey UK

Review Once again, Ms. Terry does an amazing job of working the plots of both the faery world and present day as the characters come to realize they are connected through the Dream Sphere where the past, present and future exist simultaneously ... Brilliantly entertaining ... Captivating, wondrous and uplifting!Stephen Fisher, Readers Favorite A monumental achievement ... I am in awe of Sonya Deanna Terry's ability to guide the reader from Australia to England and from the spiritual realm to the world of finance.Ray Simmons, Readers' Favorite Extremely complex yet easy to read and follow ... an amazing story that combines ancient myth, fairy tales and modern issues in a tremendous promise for the future. Exceptionally well developed characters and a dual plot that merges the past with the present provide plenty of interest, excitement and enlightenment. You can't help but feel uplifted as the story unfolds, so it is well worth reading - and more than once!Melinda Hills, Readers' Favorite

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. `Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.' - Carl Jung By Grady Harp Australian author Sonya Deanna Terry made her literary debut with EPIPHANY - THE GOLDING and trying to find how this obviously very gifted writer arrived at such an auspicious introduction we find only that she is `a former Canberra resident, a communications student, novelist, gelato connoisseur, future time-traveler, and adorer of all things adorable and a rabid theatre-goer.' So we must assume this young and gifted Australian has a keen sense of history and magic, and has continued her EPIPHANY concept with EPIPHANY - THE SILVERING.What strikes this reader first is her ability to transport us in time in a prologue that is poetically stunning and establishes the origins of the story that follows. She not only cares about the apparent prophetic possible demise of the humanities and preoccupation with the evils of consumption, but instead she has found a way to lead us to a currency of kindness. That not only makes her a gifted author but also a philosopher of note. She has that gift for bringing us up to date with the events and thoughts of the initial volume of EPIPHANY, but in doing so she offers the content of her ideas and story at book's opening: `In The Silvering -- the second and concluding volume of Epiphany -- the reading group continue their exploration of Lillibridge's Georgian-era text, and a sequence of stunning revelations unfolds. The 2008 Global Financial Crisis is looming ... a time of losses for some in Rosetta's circle, and the odd astonishing gain. The elf, who now regularly visits Matthew, fits the description of a character in Lillibridge's book. Keen to learn more, Matthew becomes intrigued with Rosetta's reading group and with humanity's secret history. Discoveries made about Edward Lillibridge, through letters retrieved in Cornwall, provide Matthew and Rosetta with something to talk about, but between them stands a wall of mistrust that threatens the sprites' noble plans. Each letter adds another colourful detail to the tapestry of Lillibridge's 18th-century existence, and Matthew learns of an uncanny truth that links him to the author's life. Rosetta's teenage daughter, Izzie, is still smitten with the elusive Glorion, but is yet to discover the friendship's bizarre significance. Via the path of mystery, reversals in fortunes, and romantic love, the reading-group members unwittingly get involved in a quest for The Silvering: an epoch rumoured to begin in 2016. The world's concept of worth, however, is keeping alive a Cycle of Suffering that body-kings began in the ancient past ... and the chance for a brighter future is fading fast. Beneath the red soil of a southern land lies a glimmer of hope, a legacy of Norwegian forest-dwellers, destined to bring about a worldwide epiphany ... but only if Matthew and Rosetta can put aside their differences long enough to fulfill Lillibridge's mystifying prophecy.'Sonya manages to sustain our fascination with this story within a story throughout this long epic. She very ably captures the life-sorting of contemporary teenagers, paints a tapestry-like setting for her story locales, and introduces mythological ideas and creatures with contemporary realities and people influenced by concepts only accessible with sensitivity to the ancients. Warm, humorous, intuitive, and imaginative, this book brings a most satisfying conclusion to a beautifully hewn diptych. Welcome to the strange near prophetic reflections of Sonya Deanna Terry. I am amazed by Sonya Deanna Terry's gift as a writer for she does not repeat her writing style but has presented fresh format in her story. The first part of the novel almost oscillates between the dream sphere and the letters in which the characters reveal a number of things- both of their personality and of their life. This also makes the story move at a fast pace and a lot is covered in just a few pages.Sonya has created a marked difference in the font type too when describing the two worlds. The words describing the dream like sphere are also dreamlike in quality. There are a bit shallow looking and lack the depth same as we feel when we are in a dream like state. On the other hand the words in the real sphere are bold and striking just as we see the world in our waking state. The third striking thing about the book is its positivity. Through the magic of her words Sonya has managed to spread positive feelings throughout the novel. This makes the reader feel revived and refreshed and fills the heart up with hope.Lastly, the writer has connected history and religion to her main story in a very convincing manner. As I had read the previous novel so was well acquainted with the characters. Yet, the book offered me a new storyline and I am looking forward to a third sequel to the novel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Book That Delivers a Powerful Punch By Marta Cheng Epiphany – The Silvering is the conclusion to the book-within-a-book story that began with The Golding where Rosetta’s reading group continues to read Edward Lillibridge’s Georgian-era book. Let me say this first about the book. Some series don’t require a reader to read the first book in the series in order to enjoy the other ones in the series. The Silvering is NOT one of those books. You need to read The Golding first – and then The Silvering for two reasons: first, because The Silvering is a continuation and conclusion to the events which occurred in The Golding and second, because both books contain a complexity of details that should be read in a certain order in order to follow and fully appreciate them. The Epiphany books (The Golding and The Silvering) are part fantasy/part mystery and, without a doubt, high-octane imagination. Writing a book requires imagination; now imagine writing a book within a book involving alternate universes – one a mystical world inhabited by sprites and forest creatures and the other inhabited by those of the human variety doing everyday mundane things like playing Monopoly. Don’t kid yourself, though. The Silvering isn’t all about mystical creatures and curious humans – it also has a powerful message that delivers a big punch.

In 1914 the Ottoman Empire was depleted of men and resources after years of war against Balkan nationalist and Italian forces. But in the aftermath of the assassination in Sarajevo, the powers of Europe were sliding inexorably toward war, and not even the Middle East could escape the vast and enduring consequences of one of the most destructive conflicts in human history. The Great War spelled the end of the Ottomans, unleashing powerful forces that would forever change the face of the Middle East.In The Fall of the Ottomans, award-winning historian Eugene Rogan brings the First World War and its immediate aftermath in the Middle East to vivid life, uncovering the often ignored story of the region’s crucial role in the conflict. Bolstered by German money, arms, and military advisors, the Ottomans took on the Russian, British, and French forces, and tried to provoke Jihad against the Allies in their Muslim colonies. Unlike the static killing fields of the Western Front, the war in the Middle East was fast-moving and unpredictable, with the Turks inflicting decisive defeats on the Entente in Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, and Gaza before the tide of battle turned in the Allies’ favor. The great cities of Baghdad, Jerusalem, and, finally, Damascus fell to invading armies before the Ottomans agreed to an armistice in 1918.The postwar settlement led to the partition of Ottoman lands between the victorious powers, and laid the groundwork for the ongoing conflicts that continue to plague the modern Arab world. A sweeping narrative of battles and political intrigue from Gallipoli to Arabia, The Fall of the Ottomans is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Great War and the making of the modern Middle East.

The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East, by Eugene Rogan

Review The Telegraph Best Books of 2015 So FarNew York Times Book Review Editors' Choice“Rogan offers an intricately worked but very readable account of a theocracy’s demise.”Wall Street Journal“The book is not only exact and readable but also has the elements of a thriller and thus is all the more remarkable in view of its thoroughness in covering a linguistically and historically difficult subject.”Economist, One of the Best Books of the Year“How a multinational Muslim empire was destroyed by the first world war, by a historian of the 20th century who is director of the Middle East Centre at Oxford University.”Economist“[An] assured account.... The book stands alongside the best histories. Mr. Rogan ably weaves the thinking and doings of the politicians and generals with their impact on the soldiers and civilian populations. He sketches many revealing vignettes.”New Yorker“This engrossing history unfolds in the Middle Eastern theatre of the First World War, capturing the complex array of battles, brutalities, and alliances that brought down the six-hundred-year-old Ottoman Empire.... Rogan argues that the empire’s ultimate demise was the result not of losing the war but of a clumsily negotiated peace. His balanced narrative unearths many seeds of current conflicts.”Wall Street Journal“[The Fall of the Ottomans] has elements of a thriller.... To have written a page-turner as well as an accurate and comprehensive history of the Ottoman struggle for survival is a remarkable achievement.”Mark Mazower, Financial Times“[A] remarkably readable, judicious and well-researched account of the Ottoman war in Anatolia and the Arab provinces. The Fall of the Ottomans is especially good on showing the fighting across multiple fronts and from both sides of the lines, and it draws effectively upon the papers, memoirs and diaries of soldiers and civilians.”New York Times Book Review“[An] intricately worked but very readable account of the Ottoman theocracy’s demise.... Gripping sections describe the British-led advance on Jerusalem in late 1917, leading to the holy city’s capture in time for Christmas. This is an extraordinary tale and Rogan recounts it well, making clear both the stiffness of the Turkish defense and the ingenuity of Britain’s tactics.”Max Hastings, Sunday Times (UK)“Rogan has written an impressively sound and fair-minded account of the fall of the Ottoman Empire.”Spectator (UK)“[A] masterly history of the Ottoman empire in its final years.... Eugene Rogan has written a meticulously researched, panoramic and engrossing history. The book is essential reading for understanding the evolution of the modern Middle East and the root causes of nearly all the conflicts that now plague the area. The Fall of the Ottomans is an altogether splendid work of historical writing.”New York Review of Books“Admirable and thoroughly researched.... A comprehensive history of World War I in the Middle East.”The Times (UK)“[A] comprehensive, lucid and revealing history.... This book will surely become the definitive history of the war.”Guardian (UK)“Compared to the western front, the Middle East was a sideshow for all but those who called it home. Rogan has rightly put these Turks, Armenians and Arabs at the centre of his account.”Daily Beast“The Fall of the Ottomans is a remarkably lucid and accessible work of history.... [Rogan] seems equally at home explaining the parameters of Ottoman grand strategy and the tensions of the British-Arab Alliance as he is at conjuring up the unique challenges of maneuver warfare in the Sinai and Palestine, or the brutal stalemate in the Gallipoli trenches. Telling quotations from diplomats, field commanders, and ordinary soldiers of all the combatants lend the narrative a powerful sense of immediacy.”Washington Post Monkey Cage Blog“A deluge of books came out last year to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. These were two of the best. These sweeping, well-researched books cover similar ground, but present their accounts with very different points of emphasis and narrative styles.”Sunday Telegraph (UK)“[A] timely and capacious history which leaves the over-trodden Flanders mud and football truces in favor of the various campaigns – at best imperfectly understood, at worst woefully unfamiliar – which the Allies waged in the Middle East. It’s in the former Ottoman lands, traumatised by war, sectarianism and repression, that the legacies of the Great War continue to be grievously felt.... Here’s a book whose instructive geopolitical relevance should be immediately apparent.... [A] compelling and brilliant book.”Washington Independent Review of Books“[A] fresh and meticulous portrait of the Ottoman Empire: modern and modernizing, then declining, and eventually kaput.”Middle East Policy“[A] brilliant book that combines the academic rigor one expects from a serious work of history and a fluid writing style that makes it an enjoyable read.... The Fall of the Ottomans offers a comprehensive history of one of the most tumultuous and least understood fronts of the Great War.... Rogan’s narrative is both precise and unhurried, while at the same time capturing the urgency and drama of events on the ground.”Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“Mr. Rogan’s presentation of a crucial part of that history, Turkeys’ role in the First World War, is a painless, colorful and pleasurable means of getting a decent hold on it.... This book sets out history that is definitely worth mastering to help understand the present.”Open Letters Monthly“Fiercely readable.... In a series of fast-moving and very skillfully-written chapters, Rogan describes in great detail the politics and personalities of the Ottoman side of WWI.”Independent (UK)“Personal stories drawn from diaries and memoirs enliven Eugene Rogan’s satisfyingly straightforward narrative.”Observer“Readers of his previous work, The Arabs, will know how comfortably [Eugene Rogan] handles multiple themes, ambitious narratives and a crowd of characters.... Even the familiar has resonance, such as General Maude’s insistence to the battered people of Baghdad that his soldiers were ‘liberators’.... That resonance adds relevance to this thorough and absorbing book, because it reminds us that the postwar Middle East settlements were as flawed as the conditions imposed on Germany, and that in turn explains why the land they fought over then is still being contested today.”Washington Times“[Rogan’s] account is geopolitical and military writing at its best – taut, anecdotal and extraordinarily researched. A tangled story, to be sure, one that both commands and rewards the reader’s attention.”The National (Dubai)“[A] landmark study.... This is a formidable narrative history, written with great verve and empathy. Through its meticulous scholarship and its deft weaving together of the social, economic, diplomatic and military history of this neglected front, The Fall of the Ottomans provides an engrossing picture of a deadly conflict that proved catastrophic for the peoples of the region.”Prospect Magazine (UK)“This is narrative history at its very best: disciplined, well-paced, judicious and spiked with detail, character and incident.”Middle East Journal“[A]n engaging, at times even gripping, narrative..... The Fall of the Ottomans combines expert knowledge with fine writing and brisk narration to provide for the first time a compelling overview of the Ottoman theater in World War I. Nothing else approaches it.”Choice“Rogan draws on previously untranslated Arab and Turkish sources to give Western readers indispensable new perspectives on the Great War in the Middle East and its lasting effects on the region.... [A] rich narrative.... Required reading for students of WWI and the modern Middle East.”Michigan War Studies Review“Rogan tells a complex story enriched by many revealing vignettes, drawing much of his information from Ottoman Turkish and Arab sources little known in the west. His judicious and detailed account, keen sense of drama, and fluid prose make this book a joy to read.... [The Fall of the Ottomans] is the best single-volume account of the most tumultuous and least understood fronts of the Great War.”Shelf Awareness for Readers“Rogan handles the tricky subjects of jihad, secularism, Arab nationalism and Turkish paranoia about a possible Armenian fifth column with historical precision and a keen awareness of their implications for the modern world.”Library Journal“[A] well-researched and well-written book.... A much-needed addition to World War I scholarship that is recommended for anyone interested in that conflict and the history of the Middle East or Turkey.”Publishers Weekly“[A] sweeping and nuanced work.... Rogan’s multifaceted analysis touches on everything from the use of Islamist discourse in political movements to the treatment of minorities in the modern Middle East.”Kirkus“[A] well-researched, evenhanded treatment of the Ottomans’ role in World War I.... An illuminating work that offers new understanding to the troubled history of this key geopolitical region.”Avi Shlaim, author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World“This is a gripping, masterful account of World War One in the Middle East from the vantage point of the Ottoman Empire. It uses the full panoply of primary sources in Turkish, Arabic, and European languages to brilliantly illuminating effect. Combining magisterial scholarship with a keen sense of drama and lively narrative style, it tells a grim story but a fascinating one. There is a great deal of new material here which not only brings events alive but also leads to fresh assessments of all the participants in the Great War but especially Arabs and Turks. If you want to understand the underlying causes of conflict and violence in the Middle East in the last century, you will not find a better book.”Rashid Khalidi, author of Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East“This book opens up a window on vital chapters in the shaping of the Middle East as well as the history of the Great War, bringing together vivid personal details with a broad historical panorama of human suffering and heroism, the incompetence and folly of the general staffs, and the scheming of the great powers.”Margaret MacMillan, author of The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914“Thoroughly researched and elegantly written by one of the leading experts on the region, The Fall of the Ottomans reminds us that the 1914-18 conflict was truly a world war with huge and continuing consequences. No one is better equipped than Eugene Rogan to handle the course and impact of the war in the Middle East and he does a superb job, telling a complex and multifaceted story with great clarity, understanding, and compassion. This timely and important work restores the Middle East to its rightful place in the history of the Great War.”Mustafa Aksakal, Chair of Modern Turkish Studies and Associate Professor of History at Georgetown University“Eugene Rogan has given us an absorbing history of the war’s principal military and political battles in the Middle East through the eyes of those who fought them. Weaving together accounts of the horrors of life in the trenches with those on the home front, he exposes the deadly dynamic emerging between the two, from the disastrous Ottoman attempt to invade Russia to the calamity of the Armenian deportations, from the British invasion to the Arab revolt and the Ottoman Empire’s final defeat and partition.”Alexander Watson, author of Ring of Steel: Germany and Austria-Hungary in World War I“A fantastic, readable, and much needed study of the most chronically neglected of all of the Great War's participants: the Ottoman Empire. Informative and enlightening.”Ali Allawi, author of The Occupation of Iraq: Winning the War, Losing the Peace“Eugene Rogan has written a meticulously researched, panoramic, and engrossing history of the final years of the Ottoman Empire. This book is essential reading for understanding the evolution of the modern Middle East and the root causes of nearly all the conflicts that now plague the area. An altogether splendid work of historical writing.”Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of Jerusalem: The Biography“Thrilling, superb, and colorful, Eugene Rogan’s Fall of the Ottomans is brilliant storytelling. Filled with flamboyant characters, impeccable scholarship that illuminates the neglected Near Eastern theater of WWI—showing how the Ottomans managed to perform unexpectedly well against the Allies—and revelatory analysis that explains the modern Mideast, The Fall of the Ottomans is truly essential but also truly exciting reading.”Roger Owen, Professor Emeritus of Middle East History, Harvard University“A vivid account of the fighting that led to the fall of one of the world’s great empires.”

About the Author Eugene Rogan is a Fellow of St. Antony’s College and lectures in the Modern History of the Middle East at the University of Oxford. The author of The Arabs, Rogan lives in Oxford, England.

However, it is primarily a political study of the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It is not so much a military study. The author, who teaches at Oxford, has looked at the Ottoman Empire and how it handled World War One. He works in Turkish and Arabic. There are many individual vignettes from individuals at ALL levels of society, from political policy carried on at the highest levels, to the various campaigns and the fighting that resulted. It is well-illustrated volume but includes only a handful of strategic maps of the Empire’s battlefields. The political history is excellent. The author has a firm grasp of the Young Turk movement, the JIHAD aspect of the Turkish war effort and the impact of the Arab on the Turk (and vice-versa). His discussion of the Armenian genocide is balanced and accurate and unlike many studies, does NOT ignore the brutal killing of thousands of Assyrians. An entire chapter is devoted to this and will inhibit sales in Turkey! But it is not so much a military study. The German battlecruiser GOEBEN & British battlecruiser INFLEXIBLE become battleships. The small old French battleship REQUIN becomes a cruiser, HMS AMETHYST becomes French (p137) and Ottoman losses are often based on old Allied accounts. German Admiral Souchon is mentioned once in the book, ignoring his large impact in the Black Sea. Edward Erickson’s I ORDER YOU TO DIE is in the bibliography but seemingly not consulted in some of the areas covered in the book. The Turkish Official military studies appear to be completely missing as well. The author does NOT note that after the Allied naval assault at the Dardanelles, in which they suffered major losses, the Turks were virtually out of artillery ammunition. One of the major postwar hindsight laments was that a second naval assault was not quickly made. The Allied losses could easily be made up while the resupply of vital ammunition was difficult in the extreme. This is a very good book, worth the read, much from the Turkish and Arab point of view. Definitive – no. Would a definitive study be longer – yes (and hence probably not published . . . )

Required reading to understand the background of today's Middle East By Bokonen The Great War meant the ruin of the Hapsburgs, the Kaiser, and the Czar. But it also meant the final collapse of the Ottoman empire. None of these events seem to matter today until we look for a historical basis for current events- particularly in the Middle East. Required reading for anyone looking for historical context for Syria, jihad, Yemen, Arabia, and Turkey

Ottomans Out Of It By Douglas Bakshian “Good prose should be transparent, like a window pane,” so said George Orwell. That's what Eugene Rogan does for us in The Fall of the Ottomans. He has breathed new life into the morbid corpse of the First World War . Gallipoli, Dardanelles, the Black Sea, Istanbul! Odious Ottomans, angry Arabs, blustering Brits , and joyless Germans all get together in a masterful mishmash of mayhem, misunderstanding and mauling. It's strange. They are all using each other and manipulating, and they end up in the rubbish bin of history.Rogan catalogues well the Tragedy of Errors that became World War One. We see that the Ottomans were just as edgy, arrogant, and manipulative as the Europeans. They got sucked into the vortex of destruction through their own imperial machinations, which in the end brought them crashing down! Add to this mix the Russian revolution which put an extra twist into an already contorted situation. Yes, the old world order imploded and this war marked the beginning of the end for Europe. Those 20th century blues that Noel Coward referred to in a song. Europe and the Ottomans couldn't handle the new century so it consumed them.Britain, the mighty naval behemoth, wanted to knock out the Ottomans with sea power. But French and British warships hit minefields in the Dardanelles straight, leaving one third of the allied fleet sunk or badly damaged in a single day of action. So naval power was not able to bombard and destroy the Ottoman artillery. This forced Britain to commit a large ground force to take the Gallipoli peninsula to silence the Ottoman guns to allow ships to enter the straight and advance on Istanbul. The ground war prompted the wholesale slaughter. In one action allied troops had to land ashore in small boats carrying about 30 soldiers each. These boats became floating coffins as Ottoman gunfire picked off the troops who were being rowed to land the final 100 yards or so, after being towed from larger ships. The troops became sitting ducks. At least one boat never made it to shore. It was seen filled with bodies, drifting past a larger British invasion ship. Of 800 allied soldiers in the first assault wave, only a handful reached land unscathed.Elsewhere landing craft were carried off course by the current and struck ground in the wrong place and wrong order, leaving troops separated from officers. Wholesale slaughter brought on by miscalculation, incompetence and arrogance. What a nightmare. Rogan pulls off a good narrative which allows readers to follow complex events in an understandable way, and then one sees the interaction of the different theaters of war and different military and political personalities. A master stroke of writing. And so this sorrowful saga ends.By way of comparison, this was a refreshing break from the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, by T.E Lawrence. He blithers on endlessly. In between mystic trances and digressions on camels, sand, and hot flinty cliffs you cannot see the desert for the dunes. Tally Ho!

By Cassandra I've read it bit by bit, because I didn't wanted to it.After Graduation starts where Submissive Training Center left us. We get to see how Sir and Brie are learning about each other in every day life. They learn their limits and boundaries as a D/s couple. They have to deal with the obstacles that every day throws at them. There are the important lessons to learn, the sensual scenes and the necessary punishments. Both grow in the process and also deal with their pasts. And then there is this one intense scene...intense in so many ways that I think it's the moment they both realise how deep their connection is and that there is no doubt this will last forever. I don't wanna spoil it, so just a quote from it."Sir smiled down at Brie. "Why are you surprised? I would never ask you to do something that I was unwilling to do myself."It's so wonderfully written that you have the feeling to be so close to them, that you feel what they feel. And once again, all aspects of the BDSM lifestyle are represented with respect and honesty. It's hard work and desires a lot of communication and trust.I'm so glad that this series will continue, because I already miss Sir and Brie.
