Book 2 in the Degree After Dark series. It is advisable to read the books in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.

A smoking hot ex, a basement club stocked with liquor, and the sickest beats in town. She should be studying, but Leah never plays by the rules. She knows he’s a bad boy, a tattooed troublemaker with one thing on his mind. She doesn’t care. When the club comes alive, he’s the only man who can make her soar—hot bodies writhing on a crowded dance floor, hands invading places too secret for public display, almost going too far… But in the back bathroom, up against the dingy tile, bent over the sink? Mmmmm. It might not be dinner and a movie, but Leah’s not complaining. Logan can give her a study break she’ll never forget.

An Exotika® contemporary erotica story from Ellora’s Cave

They are all short stories featuring Leah's escapades and are standalones. You may want to read all of her adventures from the beginning as they are quite lively!Leah is feeling overwhelmed with work, school, and of course, homework. What she should be doing is studying, but that's no fun! She needs a break! She decides to venture to her favorite club to dance her mind clear. The last thing she expects is to see her smokin' hot Ex working. When things heat up on the dance floor, they have to take this somewhere a little less conspicuous. They hit the dingy nightclub bathroom. Not the best, but Leah, at this point, just doesn't care.Leah is such a breath of fresh air and bending the stereotype of what a librarian should be. She is very confident of herself, dresses in gothic style clothes, and lives on the edge. I read this straight through and was not disappointed. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and see what Leah gets herself involved in next!4 stars/4 flamesThis book was provided to me by The Jeep Diva for the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions and rating in this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated

Based on a true story this is the "confession" of a totally straight lifeguard from Canada. He works the summers on the beach, banging bikini-babes like there's no tomorrow. In the winters, he works the indoor pools, making do with desperate housewives. He likes women, and he'd never had a gay encounter, or a gay fantasy, or even a gay thought in his life. But last winter, something happened that completely took him by surprise. He was seduced by a gay man. It was erotic, arousing, and totally taboo - and it was the best sex he ever had.

It was the Roman month of September, seven hundred and four years after Romulus-so tradition ran-founded the little village by the Tiber which was to become "Mother of Nations," "Centre of the World," "Imperial Rome." To state the time according to modern standards it was July, fifty years before the beginning of the Christian Era. The fierce Italian sun was pouring down over the tilled fields and stretches of woodland and grazing country that made up the landscape, and the atmosphere was almost aglow with the heat. The dust lay thick on the pavement of the highway, and rose in dense, stifling clouds, as a mule, laden with farm produce and driven by a burly countryman, trudged reluctantly along. Stylistically, Davis never gave up on writing stories as a medium to convey his love for history as he saw it, and his intense conviction that the knowledge of history should matter to his contemporaries. He had a faculty for describing critical scenes, such as the expulsion of the tribunes in A Friend of Caesar. In his day, he was known for his “vivid, almost melodramatic prose style”. Twentieth Century Authors would credit him with having welded “fact and fiction without loss of narrative intensity or historical plausibility.”

A Friend of Caesar, by William Stearns Davis

About the Author William Stearns Davis (April 30, 1877 – February 15, 1930) was an American educator, historian, and author. He has been cited as one who “contributed to history as a scholarly discipline, . . . [but] was intrigued by the human side of history, which, at the time, was neglected by the discipline.” After first experimenting with short stories, he turned while still a college undergraduate to longer forms to relate, from an involved (fictional) character’s view, a number of critical turns of history. This faculty for humanizing, even dramatizing, history characterized Davis’ later academic and professional writings as well, making them particularly suitable for secondary and higher education during the first half of the twentieth century in a field which, according to one editor, had “lost the freshness and robustness . . . the congeniality” that should mark the study of history. Both Davis’ fiction and non-fiction are found in public and academic libraries today.

By Felicity Barrington A Friend of Caesar: A Tale of the Fall of the Roman Republic - as someone who really enjoyed all the First Man in Rome series of books by Colleen McCullough, I was keenly looking forward to this book, and was very much over-joyed with it. While it is a work of fiction, and the story, dialogue and structure is perfect, the historical facts and perspective is very reliable, as the author was a university professor, specializing in this period. I also liked reading how the religion of Rome played a part in their lives, how the pagan religions of the times influenced the men and women, and one can see the early roots of Christianity growing - I very much enjoyed reading this very well written and well researched book and can warmly recommend it for lovers of historical novels about the Roman Empire.100% great read for those who like Rome, historical fiction, or Roman History.I really enjoyed this edition!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very good historical novel...right on the mark! By Christine Richardson Written by a Roman historian and noted professor, you can feel the history come alive in this book covering the period starting from Caesar and to the time of Nero, very interesting years (think of a more in depth version of Graves novels or their treatment by the BBC). This period is the period we think of when we think of 'Rome' and its the most fascinating in my opinion. The footnotes are there for those who feel the need to read them, for me, I just enjoy reading it straight through. One of the few books that is very scholarly yet is dramatized so well you don't know you're reading history, it seems like a chess game between living people, including loves, lives, battles, elections, religion, and more.Probably the best one off novel on this period!

Tonight is the night! I get to go on my first ever date. Sure, Daniel, whom I've been in school with since forever had to wait until after graduation to finally grow a pair and ask me out, but better late than never! We're going to the movies, and dinner after. I wonder, will my date also lead to my first kiss? By the time I'm all dressed up and ready, I decide to wait on the sofa next to Jack who is watching the game. The clock soon strikes seven, but Daniel is nowhere to be found... Soon my doubts begin to take over and I wonder if it was all a cruel joke? Is he going to show up at all? After starting on such a high note, my hopes for the evening are in tatters. Nothing could possibly console me, except perhaps a confession about how he really feels about me by the boy I grew up with.

Kinda hard to explain, but amazing is a good start By Kindle Customer I bought this book on a whim at the exact time it came available, once I started reading I knew there was no way I could put it down until it was all read. HOT HOT HOT. So we have a feisty woman who doesn't let tragedy turn her into a cowering mess like you see so often, she takes control of her life and doesn't wait for the man to save her. Now that sexy purring alpha male, yummy!!! He was the right combination of alpha, not crazy abusive possessive but caring and attentive while still showing he was going to have her no matter what. There was the insta attraction and care for the other cause yeah they are mates but the love came after getting to know each other. The sex and ANIMAL sexual tension was off the charts, the author didn't need to be overly descriptive to make the love scenes HOT. They also didn't drag on where you wanted to roll your eyes, but for the squeamish on shifter sex beware there is lots of that mixed in. It was done tastefully though and I think it added more believability to the love scenes, cause who gets with a shifter and has vanilla. Now to make this story even more intriguing and not just be set aside as another shifter romance we have a murder/stalking mystery throughout the whole book and it helps you see a side of the main characters you wouldn't normally see in a romance book. Lots of points of view, first person, really help understand everyone's feelings and side characters with great interaction flesh out the book more. All in all I loved it, simply put amazing. I very rarely write reviews and it's been a long time since I have recommended a book so much but please take a chance and you won't be sorry. By the way just in case anyone is wondering, no I don't know the author and this review is just me high from a great read.

Had great potential but quickly became too over-whelming By A.Stewart This book started off great and with lots of potential, howeverf, it quickly turned into somewhat of a hot mess. I loved the main characters of Micah( a name I adore) and Reggie. He was a smooth alpha and she was a hardworking heroine. Great. They are trying to deal with their lives as best they could - just like anyone of us. I loved their first encounter at the diner and then the following one down by the waterfront. After that things just got so tangled up, inconsistent, and over-blown that it took so much away from Ms Barton's obvious great writing skills. For example: more research or attention to detail needed to be done. It was said that he was by-passed for Homicide to stay as a beat cop yet he introduced himself as Detective. You are either an Officer or a Detective, and never the two shall meet. Reggie worked numerous jobs (proof reading papers, slinging hash, taking care of brother, etc) and all to pay a 4k bill for her brother's care. Who, we find out is living in a room that the facility also uses for storage...? She never visited him in his room? Just showed up and someone put him in the car? She never looked beyond that in to his care? Also, if just his bill was 4k what did her monthly bills get bumped to when hers were added? I work with Drs that can't even make that much treating patients! Oh, and let's not forget that the second her anesthesia was 'turned off' she imediately 'poped awake'. What? But that is ok for if you aren't around medicine I really wouldn't expect you to be that familiar, so, ok. But the thing that really got me was that in the begining the brothers were refered to as their proper names, the parents as dad/mom, and the grandparents as grand dad/grandma, but suddenly and with no warning at the hospital only proper names are used, and it became mentaly stutering at first to have to work through that Micah was really Micah II as he had been named after his father..What? I had to re-read almost an entire chapter to get the gist of it. And one character would speak but the follow-up internal monologue in the same paragraph would be from another character's pov.The other disconcerting thing was that everything was so over-blown; Reggie's numerous jobs and her childhood trauma (which had about 15 different horror stories all rolled in to one), the mother looking like she was 25 (was said numerous times, and so I couldn't help but think her sons must have looked like they were what, 15? In order to not have people think something odd) and the insta-acceptance of the paranormal. I, like many readers have read many shifter books and it can be done 'realistically' in such a way that the suspension of disbelief is obtained. Here it just didn't feel natural.I just thought that if this book got paired down it would have been awesome as all the right ingredients were present but just in too large a portion. It felt that for so much of the book that it was written by a group of inexperienced high school girls. It was like 'Seven' meets ' 'Grimm" meets 'The Young and the Restless'.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. first book in series By denise/ spreading the word Micah wanted to be just like his father and grandfather they was a cop .. Micah as he got older he was a cop but a beat cop and was not happy with his job .. Micah was planning on leaving the job in a few weeks .Regina Webster Aka Reggie worked alot to take care of her brother who was in a wheel chair from an accident that had killed her parents .. Well Micah knew that Reggie was his mate .. He was pushy and thought she needed his help .. Reggie didn't want or need his help or his family help !!! She was doing fine until something unexpected happens that leaves her homeless and with no money .. This is the first book in a new series looking forward to reading the next one

Detective Classics presents you The Lodger in a fantastic ebook edition. “When the student of medicine, Richard Bracquemont, decided to move into room #7 of the small Hotel Stevens, Rue Alfred Stevens (Paris 6), three persons had already hanged themselves from the cross-bar of the window in that room on three successive Fridays.” The last of them was a police sergeant who had volunteered to sleep in the room to learn what happens that might explain the hangings, and somehow he met with the same fate. The medical student was aware of these incidents, but…"There was one detail about which he knew nothing because neither the police inspector nor any of the eyewitnesses had mentioned it to the press. It was only later, after what happened to the medical student, that anyone remembered that when the police removed Sergeant Charles-Maria Chaumié’s body from the window cross-bar a large black spider crawled from the dead man’s open mouth. A hotel porter flicked it away, exclaiming, ‘Ugh, another of those damned creatures.’ Thus begins this bizarre mystery of “The Spider”.

The Lodger (Detective Classics), by Marie Belloc Lowndes

Review Marie Belloc Lowndes's story explores the psychology of survival in the face of agonizing moral conflict. Lorna Raver's performance is a tour de force. Her dexterity shifting between accents is breathtaking. She creates the precise intensity, uncertainty, or sheer terror called for by each shocking situation. Raver's performance, combined with Lowndes's literate, suspenseful plot, makes this must listening. --AudioFileMore than a story of a serial murderer in foggy London of the early twentieth century, this is also a look at the social and familial mores of the time and of the strange relationship that forms between a mysterious lodger and his landlady....Raver's voice has superb diction and range. She speaks for all characters, except for the lodger, in a strong cockney accent, and she sets the mood from start to finish. --Kliatt

"One of the best suspense novels ever written."—The New York Times"This is a beautifully wrought novel of psychological suspense that should have a place on any mystery buff's shelf of classics."—Chicago Sun-TimesThe Ripper murders still arouse excitement, and The Lodger has lost none of its hushed, chilling terror over the years."—The Drood Review of MysteryInspired by the notorious Whitechapel murders, this 1913 thriller first appeared when Jack the Ripper's brutal crimes were well within living memory. Time has done nothing to diminish the popular fascination with the serial killings. This gripping tale of an elderly English couple's growing suspicions of their sinister boarder has served as the basis for several movies, including one of Alfred Hitchcock's first films.Dover (2014) republication of the edition originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1913.See every Dover book in print atwww.doverpublications.com

About the Author Marie Adelaide Elizabeth Rayner Lowndes (5 August 1868 – 14 November 1947), was a prolific English novelist. Active from 1898 until her death, she had a literary reputation for combining exciting incident with psychological interest. Her most famous novel, The Lodger (1913), based on the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888, has been adapted for the screen five different times; the first movie version was Alfred Hitchcock's silent film The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927), followed by Maurice Elvey's in 1932, John Brahm's in 1944, Man in the Attic in 1953, and David Ondaatje's in 2009. Another novel of hers, Letty Lynton (1931), was the basis for the 1932 motion picture of the same name starring Joan Crawford.

The style and tempo are very modern, although some of the vocabulary is not. This makes in read like a well-done modern-day period piece. The suspense continues until the very end, and is a must-read for any mystery, or even horror, lover. As for this edition, "purchased" the Public Domain Books version for free from the Kindle Store and downloaded it directly to my Kindle. It was well done without any spelling errors. It did have one extraneous period and a few missing commas, but expect that those errors were probably errors in the original text. The only issues that I had with this version were that a few times the start of a new paragraph was not indented. ll in all, an excellent job by the PDB volunteers.

27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. psychological thriller By Paul Roberge A period piece shrouded in the Edwardian London fog but a good psychological thriller on the whole. Focuses on a husband and wife who run a boarding house (of the type that Holmes might have lived in) whose lives are changed by a mysterious lodger whom they increasingly suspect to be a serial murderer calling himself the Avenger. You get a good sense of the times and of the lives of the people involved: an ordinary couple who are suddenly forced to deal with the possibility of a homicidal madman in their house.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. atmospheric By A Customer This is the suspenseful best-seller by Hillaire Belloc's sister that inspired Hitchcock's first talkie and the 1940s-era remake that won its star, Laird Cregar, an Oscar. The motivation of the murderess lodger's landlady may be hard for moderns to swallow. Her crisis comes from, on the one hand, guessing that her lodger is a serial killer, and, on the other, needing his rent money as well as harboring the working-class Victorian's deeply ingrained aversing to informing to the coppers -- this even though a young detective is a constant visitor and supportive friend. This conflict is never resolved. By accident only are the landlady and her husband saved from "The Avenger." Despite the protagonists' moral cowardice, the deus ex machina ending and considerable over-writing, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner, redolent with fine detail of every-day life in the London of the period. Their character warts don't prevent Mr. and Mrs. Bunting from being sympathetic. Indeed, those flaws help the book rise above its genre.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's a good complement, but what I think Prendergast's text does ... By Jason Stuart I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone teaching first-year comp (that's probably "College Writing" or something to you, students), so students looking at this book should also read other reviews by students. I'm also not currently prepping a course with this text, so I can't speak to actual classroom reception of the book. What I can say is I've been reading this for a little while now as I prepped for fall (and a little after finishing the first half of a two-course FYC cycle) because I wanted to compare what I might do with this book to the prep with the text I've been using most frequently: Graff & Birkenstein's TSIS. It's a good complement, but what I think Prendergast's text does so well is put all the content that I've said in classes, informally, and present it as a more concrete, formal text for the part of class that few textbooks really cover well: offering short, useful answers (the text is basically a FAQ for College Writing) to the pervasive worries that students bring with them from English, as they spent high school defining it. I mean, the first week in, I'm saying everything in the book, and the book does a fantastic job using a conversational tone and non-technical language to explain the expectations of "college" writing that are new to the student. So there's a real continuity here between the messages I send in classroom conversation and the content of the book. It's actually kind of uncanny. But many of Prendergast's answers are not always points that students note, physically, and retain; when I discuss the "Since the dawn of man..." introduction, it's still often framed by the student as conversation. So I'll still get those introductions; I'll still have trouble making my explanation of a thesis statement good for student practice. So you'll find engaging explanations of common first-year challenges written from the perspective of the student's concerns, not the assessable content: what makes a good research question, how do you think about your thesis, how do you think about sources, why "I" is a contextual question (thankfully the book doesn't present it that way, but's it's still clear), what a "strong" thesis statement is, what to do with an introduction, etc. It's all course content, but as explanation - a good example of what this book does comes early with a question on teachers students don't like, a conversation I have often. It's as much about habituating the student to expectations as it is about technical processes. And I'm thankful for that, because the explanations are so engaging. It'd a great companion text, at any rate, one that would set up and follow much of my lecture content - and this is important to me - by maintaining a continuity of voice, as I mention above. I agree with (in the sense that I've literally said it all in class) much of the book's content about student writing, and if I'm confident that my class is enjoyable (insofar as, y'know, it can be) to take, then I'd suggest this book is enjoyable to read. I loved reading it, at least. I'll see if that's an unwarranted assumption; I've made that mistake in the past, but this book isn't being sold at Pearson prices, so. How can you really go wrong here.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Using this book in first-year college writing course By Allison Lopez This book is a gem. I ordered it on the recommendation of a colleague and read it cover to cover. I've taught composition courses in the past, and I now coordinate first-year writing courses for a college program in a prison. I'm excited to use this book in the upcoming spring semester! It's clear that Prendergast planned this book with the needs of students who are new to college writing in mind. It is cleverly organized with chapter names that reflect student FAQs--I have seriously been asked every question posed in the chapter titles multiple times in my teaching career! All the advice and instruction in this book is relatable and delivered frankly. A lot of what Prendergast writes about in this book is overlooked by instructors in their well-intentioned attempt to focus on the hard skills required for successful college writing. Two significantly under-considered challenges for new students in a writing course (or any course) are 1) understanding and breaking down an assignment and 2) deciding to drop a class because they are at odds with their instructor. Prendergast provides insight for both students and instructors struggling in these areas. She addresses and debunks common but scary assumptions students make about writing, like the idea a paper has to "flow" and the idea that reaching a page limit qualifies as a complete essay. This book will be an incredibly useful resource for my students and a handy training tool for incoming instructors. I'd recommend this to any student new to college writing and every instructor who wants to help their students succeed!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adopt for your first-year writing course: You'll be glad you did. By rose-reads [The author provided me a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.]Catherine Prendergast has been teaching writing, and writing about teaching writing, for a while now. But she’s only grown in her irreverence as time has passed.Thank God.Can I Use I?: Because I Hate Hate Hate College Writing is a short book (130 pages, print), but it has a big goal: to demystify the freshman college writing course for incoming students. It accomplishes this goal using a three-part technique. First, it breaks down college writing challenges into what I’m guessing are the most common student questions that Prendergast has received over the years. Each one of these questions gets a chapter. Second, the book pulls back the curtain on what writing professors are thinking, providing insights into the minds of the real people who are assigning college writing. Third, the book draws analogies with non-writing activities or events to help new writers understand what exactly is going on in the writing class and what they should be doing. This is a magical combination. Answering the most common questions derived over decades of experience, providing professor insights, and connecting college writing to students’ experience outside of the classroom makes for effective and entertaining reading. Let me give you an example.Read the rest of the review here: http://katieroseguestpryal.com/2015/07/28/book-review-can-i-use-i-by-catherine-prendergast/

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Very Enticing Read! By The Fairest of All Book Reviews Laurie Baker is a woman scorned, but is she the kind of woman who can go against her wedding vows as payback? Is the promise of pleasure and freedom with a mysterious man enough to move forward and make a decision for her future without there being further consequences? The old adage of two wrongs don’t make a right definitely seems appropriate for Laurie’s situation, but the benefits of her decision have never felt so good and yet so bad all at the same time.Liam Parker’s offer was too enticing for Laurie to turn down, but when that one decision ends up complicating her life even further, can Laurie suppress her wild side and settle back into her old life or will her newly released inhibitions set her life spiraling out of control when more secrets and lies are exposed?Entice is an emotional journey filled with betrayal, irreversible decisions, and an abundance of feelings. Nothing is easy in Laurie Baker’s world, and even though it started due to someone else’s actions, her choices only advance the complications and lead her down a path that she never thought she would travel. It’s a messy situation that Laurie finds herself in and there are pros and cons to any decision she would make. S. Layne presents Laurie’s situation in a way that readers can’t help but be sympathetic to even if they don’t agree with how she handles things.Everything is up in the air at the end of book 1, and based on the number of revelations that have rocked Laurie to her core, it’s hard to say how it’s all going to play out for her and the men in her life. But one thing is for sure, if Liam’s still in the mix, it’s going to be epically climatic!A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.4.5 poison apples

By Teka So hard to review this book!I have read the second and final book "Embrace" and probably it is why my feelings about this book are all over the place.Wow! I don't like to give spoilers so I will just try my best to give my honesty reviewThis first book is all about Laurie going through her feelings trying to overcome a cheating husband. She meets Lyan and have an affair just to find out he is pretty much a liar.I don't like Laurie at all! Just because in my opinion she doesn't have any self steam! Unfortunately I have seen her story happen so many times in real life! This is a book that reflects what so many women have gone through in their lives. This book contain so many truths is not a joke BUT make me feel sad that we women always blame ourselves when something goes wrong in a relationship.Even though she is like so many of us with the blaming game she is just not strong enough to hold on her own. She is just so needy of male attention! grrrrrrWell... lots of conflicting feelings for me but do I blame her for her decisions? NO!This 2 books series is just too conflicting in comparison to my expectations. Just because I would not be like her if I was in that situation doesn't mean I don't understand her but still I get disappointed about her behaviour.Probably because I am getting used to reading books with strong women who stand their ground and love themselves in the end.By the end of this book you will not really know what is going to happen in the second and final book but it is worth reading it!It just remind us "erotica readers" that sometimes the reality is much different than what we would like to see happening in our books. For some of you the final outcome from the second book may be exactly what you would have done if you were in that situation but I just love myself too much or maybe can't trust enough!cheers!

I was surprised to see that most of it was stuff I had reviewed from free practice tests online. However, I don't even remember anything from the study guide being on the test. I dare say that NONE (with the exception of probably one or two of the easiest problems ever, that I already knew) of it was on the real test. So, I don't recommend this. I had to hire a tutor to help me solve some questions because they didn't even give an explanation for the math part. Some answers were wrong! (The reciprocal of cosine is not cosecant!)If you want to buy, it's fine. There is some extra information that might come in handy, in case you get different questions than I do. But I am very dissapointed because they didn't even reply my email . I want my money back!!!!P.S for students taking the PERT, there are many online practice tests that were way more helpful than this. So when you hear that this guide has test taking tips and secrets, you might wonder if they really work. Let me tell you that this is the first guide I used that really did help and work well for me. The guide had a lot of study steps and helpful techniques that I know I will carry with me for a long time to come. It also had study secrets that will help me understand how I can process information better in the future and for this test. Plus, it had all of the content and material I needed to get through my head before taking the test as well. The guide really has it all. It's comprehensive and well organized and even easy to understand. Better yet, it's affordable. I felt like I got a lot for what I paid for this guide and I'm so glad I found it in time to make good use of it.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A thought-provoking, and true, tale of survival in wartime Austria By Mike Robbins I should start with a disclaimer: I know Julian Gray. One should always disclose this when writing a review. But more to the point, because I know him, I also know that this extraordinary book – although written as a novel – is substantially true. Julian Gray is a pen-name, and with good reason, as this is a story that could still have the power to hurt people, even though it took place over 70 years ago; those who appear in the book are mostly now dead, but their children are not.Interrogating Ellie is both well-researched and extremely readable. It is the story of Eloise, or Ellie, Picot (not her real name). She was born in St Helier, in the Channel Islands, in 1916. She and her brother were the illegitimate children of a teenage mother, who had been banished to Birmingham by her family. Eloise remained in Jersey. She was brought up by foster-parents, and eventually found a job as a waitress at a local hotel. In 1934 she met a fellow hotel-worker, and in 1938, having just had their first child, they moved to his home town in Austria and moved in with his family. Ellie took Austrian (actually by now Reich) citizenship. Before long, her marriage broke down, and the family kept her baby daughters. Eloise Picot was 25, alone, with no means of support, in a country of which she was nominally a national but which was actually at war with her own. But she had two things on her side – she was attractive, and she was not a fool. For the next seven years, through the war and the post-war occupation, she would live on her wits.Ellie did – after some difficulty – return to Britain (although not to Jersey) in 1948, and in the 1950s she remarried and settled in the south of England. She had several more children, of which Gray was one. He and his siblings knew the bare bones of her life-story, and also that they had half-sisters in Austria, but Ellie did not talk about the war, except to blurt out the odd fact. She died in 1973, and the story of her life in wartime Vienna might have been forgotten had her eldest British daughter not chanced to have business at the Public Records Office in Kew, south-west London, in 2013. She knew that Ellie had had to reapply for British citizenship after the war, and decided, while there, to ask if there was a file on her mother. There was, and she was taken aback by its contents. In response to her application, Ellie had been interviewed by the British Field Security Service (FSS) in Klagenfurt. They established that, after some twists and turns, she had gone to ground in Vienna and remained there for the rest of the war. Exactly what she had done there was not clear. The FSS transcripts, however, were damning, suggesting among other things that she had slept her way to survival. An internal Home Office memo stated that: “This woman is of bad character ... I submit that we refuse to grant a renaturalisation certificate.” It was refused. However, in a curious and very English compromise, the Home Office stated that her bad character was not sufficient to bar her from being granted a visa.So what had Ellie been up to in wartime Vienna that so upset the FSS? Using their reports on Ellie (parts of which are still redacted), Gray has pieced together the story of a hand-to-mouth life. Best not to give too much away; suffice to say that Ellie learned how to handle herself, and got through the war, although not without trouble. And although she may have used (but not abused) men, she also had a genuine gift for friendship, if Gray’s account is to be believed. It is a gripping story, and Gray has written it very well. I found myself on the edge of my seat as I read it, and totally forgot that I was reading a real person’s story; it reads more like a thriller. It helps that Gray’s style is simple and unsensational. This is a tight, clean account. How much is true? It mostly fits the facts Gray has – from the FSS transcripts, and from his own enquiries in Austria in 2014. However, he has invented or changed some things in order to construct a narrative. Thus he has Ellie in a relationship with one Mayer, an Austrian Wehrmacht officer who is part of the anti-Nazi underground. In fact, Mayer is based on a man called Carl Szokoll, who was real enough, and was in Vienna at the time; but there is no reason to believe they met. (There is also no proof they didn’t.) In real life, Ellie and her Austrian husband had not two but three daughters before they split. A friend killed in an air raid, a Dutchwoman, was also a real person and in this case Ellie did know her, but in real life she didn’t die that way. Is all this all right?I think it is. There is little here that could not have happened, and Gray is clear about what he knows, and what he has had to invent; he explains all on the website he has set up for the book. In any case, like all good books (and this is a very good book), Interrogating Ellie is about more than the story it relates. As Gray has said on the website: “When I first read the file that delivered the British government’s verdict on my mother’s moral character, it upset me ...But as I say in the book, I realised I had to just try to understand what led up to those judgements. ..I do still wonder, though, about the people who wrote those judgements in the file ...What were their lives like, I wonder?”It is a fair question. Ellie was one step away from forced labour or a concentration camp. She may have slept with those who could protect her, but there is no evidence that she hurt them, or anyone else. Today, more than ever, one could wonder about the lives of those who grant or withhold the right to remain; and how they would fare were they to seek it.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. gripping look @ one woman's survival of WWII By Sarah L. Gruwell Wow what a story! I think this is the book’s greatest feature, a woman’s struggle to survive and thrive in a country foreign to her and that only gets more so for her as time goes on. Knowing that it’s based on true events made the narrative even more engrossing. I found myself gripped by the different hardships Ellie encountered and seeing how she rose to meet each challenge to emerge stronger on the other side.Ellie’s grit and tact for survival is something to behold. I don’t think I’ve come across a character as deft at changing with her environment as she. She’s able to adapt to whoever is in power (German, Russian, or British) and create situations which help her in survival. She’s portrayed as a flawed human who does what she needs to and isn’t sorry for it. While at times, these flaws almost went to the extreme of making her unlikable; overall, I found her very relatable to myself. I got to wondering what I would have done in her place.I liked the format in which the story was told. For the most part, it’s a straightforward fictional narrative telling Ellie’s tale. Yet, interspersed within that narrative are snatches of her interrogation report in her struggle to re-apply for British citizenship, letters written by various parties detailing the events in the story, and various memos that also relate her overall story. These different formats give the story a depth and foundation in the events that inspired the story, making it richer and the reader more engaged.I do, however, wish the book could have ended better. Not in the content, but with how it was written. The ending seems very choppy and sudden. Everything is wrapped up in an epilogue that contains phrases like “this happened”, “they went here”, and “she did that”. A bund of “told” scenes in the very end give this book an almost unfinished atmosphere as it closes on Ellie’s rich story and WWII life. With a rich story and a narrator that seems very real, this book is a gripping portrayal of one woman’s struggle to survive the war years in what could be considered enemy territory despite her marriage. She shows her resourcefulness and sheer will to create a life for herself despite incredible odds. I was spellbound by her journey. The ending, however, leaves something to be desired. The reader is dropped out of the conclusion with an epilogue that just tells you what happens, not showing anything. So a great book all around until you get to the end.Book: Book received for free from publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An enthralling wartime story of a woman displaced by life events and also a study in relationships. By Dr R. A masterly piece of work, this fictionalised true story of the eponymous Ellie is a book with two layers. The first, more obvious one, is the narration of a tale of circumstance. A story that richly shows how the smallest of decisions and the tiniest of life’s twists and turns can have major implications. How an ordinary person can slip into different and often less than desirable situations through a simple domino-ing of events that could have happened more or less to any one of us had we been in similar circumstances. Indeed at times I felt a strong empathy with Ellie precisely because I imagined that I might have done similarly in some situations had I been in her shoes. The second layer is a tale of consequences, and of how a person’s life experiences can shape their own personality, character and life situation, and then that of their children. This layer is compellingly introduced in the first few pages, therefore sensitising the reader in their journey through the remainder of the book. The adolescent Ellie is herself a product of unfortunate experiences. Some aspects of her character that were criticised by her interrogator at the start of the book and then later might nowadays have been treated more sympathetically as reactions to trauma, abuse and other events. The author, Ellie’s son, has handled these aspects, and indeed the more questionable and colourful of Ellie’s actions and behaviours, with sensitivity yet honesty, so that I waivered throughout between empathy and disapproval – an achievement of the author since no-one should be considered in black and white. In terms of writing style, the author has managed something very well paced and never boring and I found myself wondering what the next chapter might hold, between reads. The beginning of each chapter gives the reader both an immediate sense of Ellie’s movement through place and time, and the feeling that there is lots of interest to follow. My interest was further sustained by the author’s successful deployment of different writing techniques to break up the narrative and avoid monotony. Thus there were for example excerpts from correspondence that were used to move the story along and also served to remind the reader that this story is based on facts. The fictional elements of the narrative added depth to the story and the whole was well researched.Despite being so well crafted, the book makes little use of descriptive prose. Thus for example, sentences describing the mountains of Austria are sufficiently illustrative for you to understand exactly how they might look, but they are brief and used simply to place you in the spot rather than to evoke emotion. This worked for me and it kept the story moving along nicely, but it may not suit all readers. I also agree with another reviewer that the epilogue is in parts less well-crafted than the rest, though it is nonetheless satisfactory and honest.I can just see this being snapped up for a film, it has all the right elements and is absolutely jam packed with happenings. It’s a strong first novel and I look forward to the next from this author.
