By karen cruse The book AREPO is a cross between The Da Vinci Code, with its secret societies and dark conspiracies; and the drama and plot twists of a Law and Order episode. I’ll admit that this book gave me the creeps at time, which just goes to show the high level of writing and attention to details contain within. The pace is fast and the storyline addictive. Read it with the lights on, and you’ll be fine. This is the second book of this author that I have read and I have loved them both. Even though AREPO stretched my limits of comfort, it was a great novel that I found myself thoroughly enjoying. The main characters are realistic and interesting in such a way that makes you want to keep reading to find out more about them. The plot is anything but predictable and keeps you engaged right up to the end. This novel is to be part of a series, and I plan to read every last one.

I enjoy well developed characters. This book was an excellent choice. The author mixes in plenty of factual information to keep you engaged and to pull you in and make the story very believable. It's that believability that makes this story scary. What if it really is possible?A great book for a busy mom who loves to read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Review: And Some Fell on Stony Ground By Carpe Librum Poignant. I often see people use this word in book reviews, and it makes me wonder how they came to that word choice. Poignant is not a word that I frequently use, but I can think of no better way to describe this almost autobiographical novel. Leslie Mann, who was a bomber pilot in WWII, wrote this not-quite-a-memoir from the point of view of pilot Leslie Mason.Mason is not a hero, and there is nothing outrageous about his story. What makes this novel so gripping is the way it places the reader inside Mason's head. He is an ordinary young man during extraordinary times, made to feel old at 26 because all those who started their service with him have gone. This is the way he describes his dead friends, as though they might be waiting for him when he returns from the next op. "His friends were in his memory, and he still gained comfort from their company."I was thoroughly captivated by the detailed thoughts that were exposed in this book. While not retelling any particularly courageous mission or outstanding bravery, this is the first book about WWII that has made me think, "I wonder how many times my grandfather felt that way as he was flying over Germany?" Did he feel, as Mason did, that "The sky could kill him whenever it wanted to. It could become angry and destroy his aircraft in its wrath."Mason is touched by the fact that airplane manufacturers put time and effort into small details of the machine, though they know how disposable they are. "He wondered if the factory workers ever said to themselves, "That'll do - it won't last long anyway.'" He is annoyed when new airmen take over dead friends' lockers and bunks with no clear respect for the men who came before them. "It was that sort of thing Mason didn't like; there was nobody he could say 'Do you remember? to."He wonders if anyone is as scared as he is, and who determined what nerve-calming foods went into ration kits. These everyday, profound thoughts truly place the reader in a WWII bomber pilot's mind.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Pick it up, put on some quiet 1940s music and be transported to another place and time.Book received from NetGalley. Opinions are my own.

This account of the average Ramsey Milholland, is a humorous school story that morphs into a young-man-going-to-war story in the years preceding WW1. And yes, there are girls... I thoroughly enjoyed it, except for its being a bit preachy about war.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. There's something so lovely in the curve of a man's spine when he is on his knees, head bowed, hands behind his back. The back of his neck, vulnerable and exposed. The splay of his toes pressed to the hotel carpet that rubbed at his knees and would scrub them briefly red. I would leave my own marks on him, careful to be sure they'd fade as fast as the rug burns. I couldn't leave anything permanent on him. We'd agreed on that from the first.I didn't want to hurt him much anyway. That had never been my game. A little sting, here or there. The slap of leather on his bare skin. The press of my teeth or scrape of my fingernails—those were things to make him shudder and moan. I would always rather get what I wanted by promising pleasure instead of pain. That was what worked for us.Esteban had been waiting for me in that position when I came into the hotel room. The lamps off, late-evening sunshine glimmering through the mostly drawn curtain providing the only illumination. He would've been willing to do the things we did with the curtains open wide, every piece of both of us exposed and nothing soft about it. I was the one who liked the lighting to be dim, unfocused. Dreamy. I found myself more easily that way."I brought you a present," I said as I shrugged my shoulder bag onto the desk. It clinked heavily, as I'd meant it to, so that he'd wonder what on earth I had for him inside it—and maybe be a little nervous.Esteban was not facing me, and he didn't turn while I unpacked my bag, even though I could tell by the strain of his muscles that he wanted to. Desperately. I laid out all the presents I'd brought. Sometimes I had a plan for how things were going to go on our monthly dates. Carefully constructed scenes I worked out thoroughly in my head so I could be sure to get it all right. Not today, though. Today I felt ripe with possibilities I'd not yet even considered. With a hand behind my back to hide what I held, I took a seat in the chair in front of him. I let my skirt ride up a tiny bit to tease him with the glimpse of stockings beneath. I put one high heel between his knees, my shin grazing his inner thigh. He smiled, but didn't move. His mouth was a little wet from where he'd licked his lips. I leaned and cupped his cheek, and he nuzzled into my palm."My good boy," I murmured. I held out the small box that had once held a bracelet. "Open."He took the box from me and sat back on his heels to pull off the lid. Inside, a coiled black ribbon. He shivered a little when he took the satin from the box, letting it trail over his hands and wrists. He looked at me, and I tugged the end of the ribbon to wrap it around his wrists, now crossed in front of him, not too snug. There was enough ribbon to go loosely around his neck, too, and to loop down around his already hard cock."I thought it would be something…tighter," he said in that delightful accent that never failed to trigger a shiver of my own. "So I couldn't get away.""If I need more than this to bind you, then I might as well go home right now," I said.Esteban shuddered, his eyes fluttering closed for a moment. When he opened them, his gaze had gone dreamy and dark. Several beads of sweat had gathered on his upper lip, and his tongue dipped out to taste them.I loved seeing how my simple words affected him. I leaned to nuzzle the corner of his mouth, close enough for intimacy, though we never kissed each other on the lips. It was another of our rules, this one unspoken but never broken. I stroked a hand over his dark hair and let it linger on the back of his neck, feeling the muscles bunch and pull at my touch. I let my mouth travel along his jaw to his ear."Open," I said again, not meaning a box this time.Esteban opened his mouth at once. Obedient. Willing. Delicious and beautiful and, for the moment, mine.I slipped my first finger into his mouth. He bit playfully; I took him hard by the chin to make him go still. He gave a soft sigh-moan, so I gripped him a little harder. I pulled his face toward me, teasing him with the promise of a kiss we both knew would never come—but that was part of what worked for us. That promise, that denial.I ran my wet finger down his chest and circled the head of his erection, which was tapping his belly. When he strained toward me with a small growl, I gripped him tight and said into his ear, "Hush."He did at once, my good boy, his cock throbbing in my hand. I put my fingers in his mouth again, and this time he didn't bite but instead wet them eagerly for me. I stroked his ribbon-bound cock again with slick fingers, slowly, then moved my hand down to cup his balls."Tell me what you want." Sometimes I made him send me a list of things he fantasized about beforehand, though I hadn't this time. And I asked without any intention of giving him what he wanted, which we both knew. Yet today, without a plan, restless and feeling caged by work and family and life, I was curious to see if what he asked me for was something I would give."I want to kiss you," he told me, "there.""Here," I replied, easing up my skirt to show him a hint of lace panties. I pressed my fingertips between my legs and raised an eyebrow."Please," he added."Maybe." I laughed at his frustrated expression. I leaned to take his face in my hands, looking into his eyes. "You are adorable."He tilted his head, his eyes half closing for a moment. "I want to please you.""I know you do. And I want your mouth on me—" I laughed softly again at his shudder. "But not just yet. Get on the bed."Esteban blinked a few times, not responding immediately. I was ready for that, my hand already grabbing the ribbon tangled around his cock and tugging in sharp command. The tug wouldn't hurt him as much as my disapproval at how long it took him to get to his feet.If you've ever tried to get up from your knees with your hands bound without pushing off from anything, you know how awkward and graceless it can be. Far from impossible, especially when the binding was mostly decorative. But still, he hated to be clumsy, which was part of the reason I yanked again, urging him to get up faster without taking the time to balance himself. We ended up standing face-to-face, my fingers still curled in the ribbon. In my heels I was an inch or so taller than he was, the perfect height to look down instead of straight on. I'd done that on purpose, too."Do you need me to repeat myself, Esteban?""No, miss.""Tell me again what you want," I said. "I want to please you."Fuck, how I loved the shiver in his voice. Later, I would make him say it to me in Spanish. I would make him teach me how to reply, and we would both laugh at how I butchered the words. In this moment, though, there was no laughter.Only anticipation.I stepped away from him, and his body rocked forward as I pulled the ribbon free and let it fall to the floor. It had been a whim, something pretty to start off with. I'd seen it on sale at the craft supply store while on an errand for my mother and had thought of Esteban immediately. I'd caught myself thinking of him more and more often in the times between our dates. I didn't want to consider the reasons why."I want you on your back," I told him.He took a step backward, then another, before turning to crawl up onto the bed. He'd stripped the comforter off before I arrived, and I took a moment to enjoy the view of a beautiful, obedient male sprawled out on crisp white sheets before going to the array of things I'd already set out on the desk.I'd picked up the ribbon because it had been a little playful, and the thought of making a gift of him to myself had pleased me. The sleek, smooth object I had in my hand, however, had not been an impulse purchase. I'd taken a long time to research it, making sure I picked the right one. Molded of heavy tempered glass, the heft of it was enough to cause serious damage if you dropped it on your foot…or your balls. It didn't look like a sex toy as much as some sort of avant-garde sculpture, clear glass swirled with blue, red and orange. Cool to the touch, it would warm nicely to body temperature. You could wash it in the dishwasher, according to the product description, though the idea of that made me shake my head. I had a similar toy at home, longer and a little thicker, but the curve of this one had been designed to perfectly caress the prostate. This toy was not for me.With the glass plug in one hand and a bottle of lube in the other, I knelt on the bed between Esteban's legs. "I brought you another present."He pushed up on his elbows to look and grinned. "What is this?""You know what this is." I put the lube on the bed and ran my hand up the inside of his thigh. He shaved his chest and his balls, but here the fine black hairs tickled my knuckles. I stroked my fingertip along his cock, then lower. His knees fell open at once, giving me access to his body. When I cupped his balls, Esteban gave another of those delicious, low gasps. His hips rolled."Look at your pretty cock, already leaking for me." I circled a finger around the head of it, drawing the slick precome onto my fingertip and holding it up. Locking his gaze to mine, I licked it away. It was a bit of a show for him, to trigger another of those noises, but no lie, the fact that he was so hard, so aroused that he dripped for me before I'd barely touched him, never failed to set me on fire."Tell me what you want," I demanded again, but soft and low, my voice a caress and not a slap.Esteban shifted on the bed, his feet going flat on it as the space between his knees widened. His fists gripped the sheets, but he knew better than to reach for me. For a second I wished he'd try—I would never truly hurt him, but discipline him? Oh, yes. We could do that."I want to see you," he said.I pretended to consider it, holding up the glass plug while I used the other hand to play with the buttons on my blouse. One, two, exposing a hint of nipple. The beauty of small breasts is being able to go without a bra, something which Esteban had once admitted to me drove him wild with lust. I stopped. He groaned. I laughed, and so did he. I put my free hand on his belly and the one holding the plug on the bed to support myself as I leaned over him, letting my mouth brush his chin before I nipped him."No," I told him. "You haven't earned it yet today."He did reach for me then. His hands moved over my thighs and hips, bunching my skirt. He kissed my cheek then my jaw, and found my throat where he nibbled and sucked the way I loved it."I can convince you?" he asked into my ear, stroking his hand upward to cup my breasts. Thumbing my nipples through the thin fabric of my blouse, he moaned softly when they hardened at his caress. "So much easier to touch you…"I slapped his face lightly and gripped his chin, digging the blunt tips of my nails into his flesh. Esteban's eyes closed immediately. His body tensed. His arms went over his head, fingers linking his hands.I almost came, then and there, his reaction a better aphrodisiac than anything in the world."You will touch me when I say you may touch me." My voice low. Dangerous. Stern."Yes, my goddess.""Fuck, I love it when you say that." My fingers loosed their grip, leaving a few marks I soothed quickly with my tongue. I sat back. "Look at me."He did.I shifted between his legs then straddled one of his thighs to press my pussy against him. I was wet through the lace. I held up the lube and the glass toy.His cock jumped. So did the muscles on his inner thighs. And, a moment later when I pressed a slick finger against his tight hole, so did the muscles there. It wasn't the first time I'd ever played with his ass. One of the first things we'd talked about when we started this relationship was turn-ons and -offs. Limits, hard and soft. Expectations. Safe words. We'd been practical about it, making lists. Our agreement wasn't anything that would stand up in court, but it was one we'd worked on carefully to be sure it suited us both. Realistic, maybe to a fault. This was not a love affair. It was, however, the first time I'd ever used an object on him instead of only fingers or tongue. Esteban had told me his fantasies about being taken that way, and though on the surface what we had together might appear to be all about what I wanted, it was truly about satisfaction for both of us. He wanted to please me; I got off on being pleased. But more than that, I reveled in the way the smallest things I did to him got him hard. Made him ache. I loved making him come for me, his orgasms like a tribute. Something he owed me and I deserved.I warmed the toy's chilly glass against my hot flesh while I ran my nails, scratching, up the insides of his thighs. Tickling over his balls and the shaft of his cock. I dripped lube on his prick and stroked him, though when he began to move into my closed fist, I laughed and stopped.Esteban's laugh broke with a gasp. "Please.""Not please." I pinched his nipple, not hard enough to hurt but definitely hard enough. "You know I shamelessly fetishize you speaking Spanish to me."His hips had bucked when I pinched him, and he gasped again. "Compláceme, por favor."Spread open for me, unbound but not moving because I hadn't given him permission, Esteban nevertheless gave me a wicked grin. He fucked upward, getting a few thrusts in before I gripped his cock tight at the base to keep him still. His eyes twinkled as he ran his tongue along his bottom lip and said something else in Spanish. I didn't know what it was. I didn't really have to. He could be reciting his grocery list or a poem. My Spanish was limited to ordering off the menu at a Mexican restaurant. It was the sound of him speaking his native language that worked me up, and he knew it.In response to his naughty teasing, I pressed a slick finger to his asshole, making him gasp. "You want this?""Oh…yes. Please, please, please… Por favor!"

Vanilla By Angie Elle Thank you to MIRA and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. One thing I know for sure when I pick up a book by Megan Hart is that I am in for a surprise; this is an author who never writes the same book twice. What I can count on is characters in realistic situations with emotions that are so genuine they leap off the page. These books may be classified as romance or erotica, but they’re so much more than that.Vanilla was Elise’s journey to find not only herself, but a contentment she didn’t know existed. Her character was very interesting. For someone so open about alternate lifestyles, I think she unknowingly had a rigid vision of the way things were supposed to go for her. When Elise was introduced to something new, she wasn’t closed to it, but she was taken by surprise at how simple things could affect her. Her family was a wreck, and she tried to be a buffer at times. And while all this was going on, she was still recovering from a break up that had happened years ago.I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. I felt like it was broken up into two parts – the first gives us a glimpse into Elise’s sexual tastes and establishes who she is as a person. She’s compassionate and always tries to do the right thing, but sees that right and wrong isn’t always black and white. The second half shows us what happens when Elise’s life is upended, and she doesn’t get what she wants. This is where Niall shows up and throws a wrench into Elise’s life, forcing her to sort through her past. Niall was a force to be reckoned with, and he wasn’t willing to give in to everything Elise wanted. But the chemistry between them was electric, and it was clear she was going to have to compromise if she wanted things to work out. Her journey begins at this point, and the reader gets an opportunity to see Elise’s struggle to come to grips with her past and present – and if she’s willing to make some changes in order to be with Niall. What I loved about this book, and every other Megan Hart book I’ve read, is that things were resolved in a plausible way. It’s never perfect, just like in real life, but it is at a place where I can believe these are choices the characters would make. If you're looking for a story about self-discovery with some surprises and steamy scenes along the way, I think you’ll enjoy this one. This review was originally posted at Badass Book Reviews.

If Fifty Shades was a Touch Too Much for You, Try this Out By TammyJo Eckhart I have not read anything else from Megan Hart, she doesn't show up on the genre lists of what I usually read nor has she shown up as a sister BDSM author. This is more a romance than anything else but it doesn't follow all of that genre's tropes which is good because I find a lot of those tiresome.Hart balance showing and telling well, giving us enough descriptions to urge our imaginations without forcing us to picture her characters in one single way. Her dialogue seems genuine and the situations believable as do her characters.Elise seems like the average woman who discovers she likes a little Ds in her life where she is the one in charge; it isn't about kink, it's about attention, detail, and desire. We never feel like Elise is bad or wrong, we don't feel like her desires are because of something messed up in her childhood or a substitution for heartbreak. Elise is normal.Niall seems very normal, too, and thus they, of course, run into difficulties that threaten their love. But Niall isn't a stereotypical "normal guy," that's more Elise's brother frankly, more her lovers, too. He's normal in that he behaves like most good men would, a bit worried and a bit intrigued by a slightly kinky lady he has so many other things in common. That normalcy is really what makes this a believable and hopeful love story. As a kinky woman I wasn't offended by the portrayals, as a woman with a long-time husband I was pleased by the truth of the feelings and the challenges, and as an author myself I wasn't offended by poor grammar or simplistic writing.

I'm thinking I like Vanilla a little bit more now ;) By Christine Softley ARC received from NetGalley for honest review.Seeing as I've read quite a few Megan Hart books I knew what to expect as to the writing style being used. I think some people have an issue with it but if you know the Author's work you know that this is just all part of the charm of a Megan Hart book.I really enjoyed this book. As usual Megan has once again struck a different and original plot line that I have yet to come across. It's not often that we get to see things done with the female being the dominant and I found that it was extremely refreshing to embark on this adventure with a different view. Now again normally I prefer my books to stay largely based on the main couple but again the Author has done a great job of bringing you through a few different relationships all with different desirable aspects. I will be honest and say for a while there I honestly wasn't sure who Elisa was going to end up with and strangely enough I enjoyed this part of the book most. You never knew exactly what was going to happen next.As usual, the Author has done a superb job of giving a great back story with lots of depth. If you are looking for a quick read than this isn't for you but if you are wanting a read that will suck you into the story and make you feel as if you yourself are apart of it, then this is totally the book for you!At the end of the day I was glad to have read this one. I laughed, I teared up and I definitely had to go cool down often!

I would recommend in conjunction with the AP World History book too. The practice exams are also very similar to the actual test, which is great.

It is extremely boring and bland and includes a lot of unimportant information By Docaz Whenever I tried to read this book, I had to force myself to do it and I dreaded it so much. It is extremely boring and bland and includes a lot of unimportant information. It spends so much time repeating the same exact thing for each civilization and does not go in depth on the actually important things. I took AP World History and loved it. It was one of my favorite subjects. But somehow reading this made me start to hate world history. I also don't like how the book includes only two practice tests. I feel like it would be a lot more beneficial if there was at least one more practice test, especially for the price.

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very disappointed. By Theresa I purchased this study book for my daughter to take the World history subject test for SAT and she studied very hard. The SAT test questions were not what was in the book. Does this book need to be updated? Waste of time and money.

It was supposed to be a simple human-interest story, the kind of fluff piece hard-nosed reporter Brett Davis begrudgingly accepts only because his job is at stake. But when his newspaper editor sends him to the northernmost point of Europe to interview the head of a secretive monastery, Brett encounters a man who cannot possibly be who he claims to be—St. Nicholas of Myra. All Brett wants are the facts, but the tale Nicholas tells is too incredible to be true. Or is it? As Nicholas reveals the intricacies of his amazing long life, Brett discovers not only the origins of every facet of the much beloved Santa Claus myth, but also that, when confronted with the miraculous, faith is the only rational choice left.

Review You Will Believe...Absorbing, well-written and thought-provoking. - Amazon customerAbsolutely wonderful...I will have to go back and re read it. - Amazon customer

From the Author About the Book...Concerning Cloud FactoriesEvery parent who tells their children about Santa Claus must, at some point or another, confront the fact that their previously trusting and adorable children have turned into hard-nosed skeptics. In my case, this occurred just prior to the teen years, which in our family happened approximately seven years ago, which is also when the seeds of this novel were sown.Prior to this time, I delighted in the way my children believed almost anything I told them. As a story-teller, I took particular glee in weaving strands of fact together, pointing to the most nebulous threads in evidence as proof that whatever tale I happened to be crafting in the moment was true. Among my favorite stories were the "cloud-factories." We encountered these frequently while driving along the highway, when my curious kids would point to some factory or industrial complex puffing out billowing plumes of white vapor and demand to know what that particular factory made. Thinking quickly, I answered, "Clouds.""Clouds?" they wondered."Yes clouds. Those are cloud factories. See the clouds they're making? That's what they do.""But Da-ad! Doesn't God make the clouds?" my oldest queried. Ah, the Divine trump card, and played so quickly, too!"Of course He does," I answered. "But these factories are built so man could help God. It's not that He needs our help, but He wants us to join Him in what He does. That's why we have cloud-factories."Oh. Cloud-factories. That explained everything. My children exposed similar vulnerabilities when it came to getting them a treat from the local fast food joint--though this time my wife was the culprit. "Okay kids, now we're going to get a special treat. We're going to get some tap water!""Yay! Tap water!"They bought that one for years.I digress. About seven years ago, they began asking skeptical questions about Santa Claus. He couldn't possibly be real, could he?My heart fell. They were too young to be so skeptical! I wasn't ready for them to stop believing. I needed their belief. That's where the magic was. If they stopped believing, then all the wondrous enchantment of childhood would evaporate too soon, leaving the damp autumn of the teenage years as a warning that the harsh winter of the empty nest was just over the horizon."Of course Santa is real," I answered. I knew something about Saint Nicholas, having written a Christmas sermon some years ago where I pointed out that the real Nicholas believed in the Christ Child given on Christmas Day, and would not want to stand as a substitute for Him."But how could he be real?"Reluctantly, I began to share with them the origins of Nicholas of Myra, pointing out that he was a bishop who loved the Lord. And as they continued to press in about the details, I would reply "That's what the legend says," as a way to evade queries about elves or delivering toys to millions in a magical sleigh overnight."But how could he still be alive?"And that's when I brought up Christ's words to Martha at the tomb of her brother Lazarus. Of course Nicholas was still alive. He believed in Christ, and all who believe in Jesus and give their lives to Him are alive with Him even now, as the Scriptures say.And from there, it was a short jump in my fertile imagination to the story here.

About the Author Michael J. Scott writes fiction that doesn't shy away from hard questions or dicey situations. He treats his characters like real people with real flaws who sometimes do wrong and stupid things--especially when they're trying to do the right thing. His interests range from the erosion of the American family, socio-political unrest in the U.S. that threatens to break into civil war, UFO's, adventures in Biblical and Christian archaeology, dystopias, sword and sorcery fantasy, to getting inside the mind of a serial killer.Feel free to check out his books and receive two free books when you sign up for his mailing list at MichaelJScottBooks.com

Lewis and Gillian Bradshaw, Michael J Scott is one of my favorite authors. So when I received an e-mail, announcing a new book, I bought and read it immediately. (I wish he would focus and finish Jefferson's Road, but perhaps he has writer's block about it. It happens.) Absorbing, well-written and thought-provoking. I've often wondered what became of Lazarus, Melchizedek, the dry bones that came to life in Isaiah - surely they didn't subsequently get sick and die! Are they walking around now? How would we know? Is Santa Claus a real dude? By the end of the story, I was convinced. The Author's Note at the end is trying to tell me that this is just a story. For that, I dropped my rating to a 4.9! Be warned, this is an overtly Christian book. If you hate the Bible, you will be offended.

Withers If you want to get a glimpse of another part of the Arthurian legend, then this novel is one you will definitely want to read. Although I am an amateur on the subject, I have always had a fascination with this time period in England's history, and this novel rings true to me. Even the magical scenes seem real; I don't want to refer to them as fantasy, because somehow, the reader can believe that they truly happened. I can see the research and knowledge in this writing, and that makes it appeal to me all the more. The story is narrated by Rhowbyn, a complex character who learns much as he accompanies the Green Knight. A good book makes the world around me disappear, and this one did just that for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely wonderful! By Stachia Chadwick Set in the realm of Arthurian legend, this is the tale of the Green Knight as seen through the eyes of Rhowbyn, Steward of the Green Chapel. We meet Rhowbyn as a young lad in the household of King Lot of Orkney. He is there when the Green Knight issues his challenge to trade blows. We follow Rhowbyn in his service to the Green Knight as he fulfills his sacred duties through the cycle of the pagan year. Be prepared for Mystery and magic. Rhowbyn is a most inspirational character and I am hoping that Ms. Chandler will be writing more about him and the adventures he was preparing for at the end of this book. For me, Rhowbyn's story was just beginning and there is much more to be told...

A young man has a ring that influences people, which brings responsibility and benefits of a harem. He is living a fantasy that seems very pleasant. The bundle is rather short but I didn't mind the author adding to the adventure.

He can't read minds so how does he know what everyone is thinking? He doesn't. The ring tells him. But what if the ring is lying?

The fifth novel in the Secrets of the Zodiac, a series of full-length historical romances: Featuring sexy storylines, complex characters, and international intrigue, set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. A lady haunted by nightmares, a duke chased by death, and an answer hidden in the night sky... Insomnia and a passion for astronomy keep Lady Violet Holloway awake all night. She's content to remain alone with her telescopes and treatises, until an unexpected marriage proposal changes everything. Though she's never met him, Violet is handed off to a lord whose name is only mentioned in whispers. Alexander Kenyon is the Duke of Dunmere...better known as the Duke of Death, after losing three wives under unusual circumstances. He's learned his lesson about the dangers of falling in love, so this marriage is purely for convenience. He has no time for a bride anyway, no matter how intriguing she is. As an agent of the Zodiac, he is tasked with solving a string of perplexing murders hinting at a political conspiracy. As the stars spin overhead, the date of the next murder draws near. Violet and Alex must work together to stop it, or risk losing the life they've found together.

Alex and Violet are very different from each other, but as the novel progresses, they develop an understanding and appreciation for each other, and they depend on each other's strengths. I loved the banter between them, Alex's abruptness and Violet's more subtle wit. Usually in a novel from more than one point of view, I prefer one point of view over the other, but that wasn't the case here; I looked forward to seeing the world from both Alex's and Violet's eyes. The secondary characters were colorful and fun to read about. Finally, I liked the mixing of mystery and romance genres--that was interesting and unlike anything I've read before. I would definitely recommend this novel to fans of historical romance.

This is the first Secrets of the Zodiac book I've read (somehow, I never seem to start at the beginning of a series!) and it was the best Regency I'd read in quite a while. Right away I was excited to learn about Alex's secret activities. Violet is very intelligent, and her shyness and reserve make her a somewhat atypical heroine. The romance develops slowly, with both of them having trouble in overcoming the initial distance between them. When they finally do come together, it's very satisfying. As skeptical as Violet is of astrology, It really does seem like her and Alex's love was written in the stars :) ...they just belong together.

I've come to expect great characters that are all different and delightful, and Alex and Violet come to life in this novel like all the others. Violet is in her 20's, and has been living under the thumb of a domineering aunt and a drunk uncle for most of her life and would do just about anything to escape them, including marrying someone she never met. Older Alex is cold and reserved, having suffered tragedy after tragedy in his previous marriages and earning him the nickname of The Duke of Death. Alex is also a spy, so that tends to complicate things just a bit. When murders start occurring around London, Alex is afraid his secret has been found out just as he's beginning to truly fall in love with his wife. When Violet's life is endangered Alex calls on some old (and familiar!) friends for help to track down who is behind these seemingly unrelated events.

Carol Ruckdeschel is the wildest woman in America. She wrestles alligators, eats roadkill, rides horses bareback, and lives in a ramshackle cabin that she built by hand in an island wilderness. A combination of Henry David Thoreau and Jane Goodall, Carol is a self-taught scientist who has become a tireless defender of sea turtles on Cumberland Island, a national park off the coast of Georgia.Cumberland, the country’s largest and most biologically diverse barrier island, is celebrated for its windswept dunes and feral horses. Steel magnate Thomas Carnegie once owned much of the island, and in recent years, Carnegie heirs and the National Park Service have clashed with Carol over the island’s future. What happens when a dirt-poor naturalist with only a high school diploma becomes an outspoken advocate on a celebrated but divisive island? Untamed is the story of an American original standing her ground and fighting for what she believes in, no matter the cost.

Review A New York Times BestsellerA Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Series pickOne of Amazon's Top 100 Books of the YearA Daily Beast Best Nonfiction Book of the YearWinner of the Langum Malott PrizeWinner of the 2015 Society of Environmental Journalists Rachel Carson Environment Book AwardAn Advisory Council for the Georgia Center for the Book’s “Books All Georgians Should Read”“Vivid. . . . Ms. Ruckdeschel’s biography, and the way this wandering soul came to settle for so many decades on Cumberland Island, is big enough on its own, but Mr. Harlan hints at bigger questions. Who does this island belong to? The Park Service, the Carnegies, Carol—and, for that matter, the turtles? What is the difference between stewardship and ownership? Carol Ruckdeschel found a home as the latest in a series of women who have tried to protect Cumberland Island. The difference being that, rather than being a Carnegie, she is a benevolent invasive species of one.”—Wall Street Journal“Harlan intimately and expansively profiles a fearless Southern island dweller. . . . A moving homage and an adventure story that artfully articulates the ferocities of nature and humanity.”—Kirkus Reviews“Carol Ruckdeschel isn’t quite your mother's idea of a role model, but she is my idea of an inspiring woman. Her gifts are many, her commitment resolute, her contribution world-class. And boy—as you’ll read—has she had fun. What a story! It's as beautiful as the island she loves.”—Carl Safina, author of The View from Lazy Point and A Sea in Flames“Now this is an adventure story. Untamed is the true-life saga of a brilliant, beautiful woman who became her own tall tale. Just to survive, Carol Ruckdeschel had to become as elusive and mysterious as the creatures she first set off into the wilderness to study. Hunted by her enemies, stalked by an ex-lover, living off the land, Ruckdeschel found herself locked in a battle of wits to stay alive and pursue her scientific passion. This is no Sad Girl on a One-Year Quest for Love and Backbone; Carol Ruckdeschel is on a mission, and she's smart and lethal enough to deal with anyone who tries to stop her.”—Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run“A true action hero, Carol Ruckdeschel is using her powers of insight, persuasion, and personal commitment to protect a wilderness island off the coast of Georgia. She’s not just bemoaning the tragic decline of the natural world that sustains all life on earth, humans and turtles included. She is also putting her own life on the line to save what’s left. Thanks to Carol, there is hope for wild creatures who have preceded humankind by hundreds of millions of years—and hope for an enduring future for ourselves as well.”—Sylvia Earle, record-setting oceanographer, National Geographic explorer-in-residence, 2009 TED Prize winner, Mission Blue founder, Time's first Hero of the Planet, and author of The World Is Blue“Wild country produces wild people, who sometimes are just what's needed to keep that wild cycle going. This is a memorable portrait.”—Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, winner of the 2013 Gandhi Peace Award, founder of 350.org“Get ready to inhale steaming carcasses, gun smoke, and salty sea air. Harlan has a magic touch for storytelling. He rings out every sensory detail in this compelling sketch of a controversial, no-holds-barred life.”—Jennifer S. Holland, National Geographic writer and New York Times bestselling author of Unlikely Friendships“Open this book to the brine of salt marsh, the musk of turtles and sea breezes, and the astonishing story of Carol Ruckdeschel. From the first line I was captivated by this biography of a fierce and enigmatic passion for wildness, mesmerizing and beautiful. May we all learn something of love from it.”—Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood“Untamed is not only a page-turner but also a show-stopper. Its engaging protagonist, Carol Ruckdeschel—a combination of Jane Goodall and Annie Oakley—is kaleidoscopic in her paradoxes: ‘brutal and benevolent, savage and sympathetic, cutthroat and compassionate.’ Harlan has written an environmental classic that belongs on the shelf alongside Carson, Leopold, Muir, and Thoreau. This crafty, adventurous biography reads like a good novel and leaves readers in tears. It’s a tale of an American hero told by an American hero, and the collaboration is luminous.”—Thomas Rain Crowe, author of Zoro’s Field: My Life in the Appalachian Woods"This is going to be a winner. I loved it—and was even choked up a time or two by Carol’s passion to save wild Cumberland. An ‘undertow of awe’ sweeps beneath the entire story. As Carol’s life reveals, the battles for wilderness are many and the victories are short-lived, but ultimately the fight comes down to one thing: pure, unwavering love."—Brooke Williams, author of Halflives: Reconciling Work and Wildness“Deliciously engrossing. . . . Readers are in for a wild ride.”—Citizen-Times (Asheville)“This is one gorgeous book, a testament not only to Will Harlan’s obvious writing chops but also what the best in journalism is all about, the passion to dig and go beyond the obvious. Harlan’s unflinching, inspirational biography of Carol Ruckdeschel . . . shows the reader her amazing character, spine and spunk . . . Untamed is a unique portrayal of a unique crusader . . . Very thought-provoking stuff, with beautiful writing and an eye-for-detail.”—Society of Environmental Journalists

About the Author Will Harlan is the editor in chief of Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine and has had work appear in National Geographic Adventure, Sports Illustrated, and the Wall Street Journal. He is also one of the country’s top trail runners. He lives in the mountains of North Carolina.

An uninformed reader can't tell how accurate and objective the story is in the telling of the events and the description of the characters involved. However, it is an engaging and enjoyable read and the commitment and dedication to the preservation of our natural environment, and in particular, wilderness, is inspiring.I am biased in favor of the protection of wilderness areas and believe this should take precedence over historical and archaeological interests, which colors my view of the subject. This book is likely to get you thinking about the various conflicting interests that compete for the use of our land and natural resources, and in particular, which interests should supersede others.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Keep Cumberland Island's Wilderness Wild! By Frederick A. Braman I read this book with great interest and I enjoyed it. Whether some of the anecdotal stories about Carol are all entirely accurate or not, as some reviewers question, is unimportant. In fact, the stories themselves are unimportant. With something like a 100 visits to Cumberland over the past 30 years, I have heard them all before. Cumberland Island is a special place. The south part, is very friendly to families for hiking, camping, shark tooth hunting, meandering through the island's rich history, or spending a day at one of the world's great beaches. The north part is a little harder to enjoy, and well it should be. It is half an island where nature should be left to her own devices. Had it not been for a favored president's son getting married in the north, few would care about it. Even as you read this, there are a lot of people trying to turn Cumberland Island, this magnificent resource, into something that we already have a lot of; paved bike trails, motor vehicle tours, parking lots, beach boardwalks and all that come with them. I enjoy that too, but, a few places need to be preserved, giving turtle nesting a priority over sea kayak rentals and suntan lotion sales. Today, Cumberland Island is special, but, fragile. Fragile, not because of shifting sands, occasional wildfires, or summer storms, but fragile because a few political decisions could make it just another beach place, like the rest of the East Coast. I hope that everybody reads this book and that every reader comes away with the notion that the special places like Cumberland require the public's constant surveillance to keep them special. Harlan did not make this message explicit, but, it is imbedded in his book's pages. The government has done a lot to preserve our natural heritage, but, they often need help in making the right decisions and we need to keep an eye on them. Carol has kept an eye on them and deserves a major share of credit for how Cumberland has turned out.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Maybe not the wildest woman in America but one of the more interesting women By Dr Muddawg Will Harlan's "Untamed" is a readable and informative screed about the life and crusades of Carol Ruckdeschel.Whiledescribing her a misfit would be an injustice, she has battled against the powers that be for decades in order to preserve Cumberland Island as a wildlife refuge. I had read a piece about her in The New Yorker by John McPhee years ago. To say her approach to saving wildlife is idiosyncratic would be an understatement. Her in-your-face confrontational attitude to the old monied residents, the National Park Service, shrimp fishers, the US Navy and hack politicians (her friend Jimmy Carter being a notable exception) may have undermined her cause at times. Hers is an interesting life down a path few would dare to take. There is no doubt the country owes her and others for the preservation of one our most beautiful barrier islands on the East Coast. Cumberland will doubtlessly need more advocates in the future but they may not need to be quite as controversial as she to be effective.
