Generals of the Bulge: Leadership in the U.S. Army's Greatest Battle, by Jerry D. Morelock, Carlo D'Este

Review "This is great: One of the best books about the U.S. Army in World War II is revised, and made better. You can't understand the war without reading this." (Thomas E. Ricks author of Fiasco and The Generals 2014-10-31)"Jerry D. Morelock's Generals of the Bulge is a fine and useful addition to the enormous body of literature about the biggest battle in American military history." (Rick Atkinson author of the Liberation trilogy 2014-10-29)"This is a superb account of selected generals leading American forces during the Battle of the Bulge. Morelock explores the character and careers of these men and explains why some of them failed as leaders during the bitter fighting in the Ardennes while others succeeded. Cracking good history and a fascinating discussion of the extraordinary demands of leadership--when lives are on the line." (Brig. Gen. John W. Mountcastle U.S. Army (Ret.), former Army Chief of Military History 2014-12-04)

First, it's a great read, exciting from the first page to the last. Second, it's not only incisively researched by a military historian who knows where to look, but it's written by a former combat commander and career U.S. Army officer who understands what the data mean. Third, and not least, this book is a scrupulously honest leadership study, an examination of a half-dozen key leaders at various senior battlefield levels through strategic command who had to make prompt decisions with enormous implications under stresses unimaginable to us today in this age of restrained, restricted warfare. Colonel Morelock understands war from his own career, and he understands men. As a result, he is able to interpret acutely the careers of soldiers such as Bruce C. Clark, the new one-star general who immediately grasped the importance of the road-hub of St. Vith and employed his outnumbered Combat Command A with such skill that, arguably, no other battlefield commander made a greater contribution to the ultimate victory over the attacking Nazis, or Lt. Gen. Courtney Hodges, First Army commander, who faced the enormous punch of the German blow but is now forgotten, over-shadowed by more-glamorous figures, such as Patton. Eisenhower, Bradley, Simpson, Middleton and Maj. Gen. Alan W. Jones (commander of the 106th Infantry Division) round out the main figures in this swift-reading, well-written, immensely valuable book and, in each case, the author weighs the background, wartime experiences, temperament and effectiveness of the officer examined to give an enduringly relevant assessment of what worked and what didn't in America's greatest, gravest battle, a massive confrontation that ultimately involved 600,000 American troops and lasted from the weeks preceding Christmas, 1944, into the depths of the wars final winter. I've read quite a number of books on the Bulge (two uncles involved) and very few approach this level of quality--and none exceeds it. This is a great book for military officers or anyone in a leadership position, but it's also an instructive, exciting read for those who will never have to give a fateful order. Absolutely first-rate!

By Jon Jordan For over two decades, "Generals of the Bulge" has been the standard guidebook of American leadership in World War II's largest battle of the 1944-45 campaign. (Sharp-eyed readers will see Morelock's credits dotting hundreds of bibliographies and endnotes of books by Rick Atkinson, Michael Korda, Carlo D'Este, and countless other top historians.) Now, with updated research and new, insightful analysis, "Generals of the Bulge" brings the American side of the Battle of the Bulge into fresh perspective with a brutally candid assessment of what went right and what went wrong for Generals Eisenhower, Bradley, Montgomery, Patton, Hodges and other men caught in the eye of Hitler's winter storm. In highly readable sections, Morelock telescopes the action from 30,000 feet (the chapter "The American Army in the Ardennes") to the blood-soaked snow level ("Jones, Clark, and the Defense of St.-Vith"). Most helpful is his lucid assessment in the afterward, "Leaders of Skill and Character," in which he moves from historian to veteran appraiser of the leaders who pulled the U.S. Army through its greatest battle. While the book's original format, "Generals of the Ardennes," will remain a watershed in World War II history, "Generals of the Bulge," with its sharpened edge, will stand as a work no one seriously interested in American military leadership can do without.

By Cincinatus77 Jerry Morelock is a superb historian, noted professional Soldier, expert scholar and, most importantly, a fantastic story teller. In Generals of the Bulge, Morelock depicts the critical value of leadership: not only the leadership of the generals, but also the actions of everyday soldiers who led small groups of desperate, scared men to overcome tremendous adversity. In Generals of the Bulge: Leadership in the U.S. Army’s Greatest Battle you will find a story is riveting, the definitive story of the Battle of the Bulge and a treasure trove of leadership case studies that will help you today to become a better leader. This is a book that you should buy, study and pass to your friends. Well done!

In the 14th century, Vampires are spreading a deadly disease, and all that stands between them and human annihilation are five young knights who seek to stop them at all cost. On a mission of diplomacy, to ask help from an unlikely ally, their bluff was called, and now they must produce evidence they don't have. The Pope is dissatisfied with the knights, but has a plan to fake the evidence, but it will involve doing the impossible: Capturing a Vampire. The last remnant of the Templar Order, with help of a new recruit, once again must travel in a plague ridden world, and face off against monsters that lurk in the shadows and within the group itself. Set out on a journey in Medieval France, where thousands are dying every day, and five Templar Hunters must find, capture, and bring back a vampire, or watch all of humanity fall.

By Rajalakshmi Prithviraj I had read the Prologue (an awesome book by itself titled Journey to Darlet!!!) and it made me read the main story. I must confess, I read them both in succession, and that too, in one sitting.Hats off to the author for a wonderful writing  style. He has never gone over the top when it comes to usage of language. His writing  is powerful and inspite of absence of gory  descriptions, the fear factor exists. There is an aura of fear and  valour at the saame  time. The characters are well etched out. They do have a bit of mystery added  to them, like why was Harlan behaving the way he was, why was Jacques the recent  addition to Temple Hunters. Yet, these characters and the others, make the story readable. The Pope  is yet another intriguing character. There is more to this story and the narration is so engrossing that, by the time this part ends, you will wish to read more. I am not a lover of horror and paranormal, though I do read them, the reason being I get put off by too much of blood and gore. But this story is different. It exudes fear but at the same time makes for a compelling continuous reading because of strong descriptions. To sum up, you will be compelled to read the story once you read the Prologue and vice versa. Also, look forward to a sequel.P.S- Chris, loved your book.

By Kathleen Young Story Rating ~ 4.5 StarsHero Rating ~ 4.5 StarsHeroine Rating ~ 4.5 StarsRomance Rating ~ 4 StarsHeat Level ~ 4.5 Pantie Drenching STARS!Ending ~ To Be ContinuedI was left wanting more and wanting it now at the end of the first book in this series, Shards of Glass and for me, Broken Glass was very much worth the wait.At the end of Shards of Glass, Janie had just found out that her leading man Cal had been fired from the movie they were filming, The Dark Edge of Love. Not only that but Daniel was back as the director and he was also going to be playing her leading man.The chemistry between them runs HOT but before they have a chance to start things up, Janie has an emergency that has her needing to get to Vegas right away.Once Janie handles the emergency, she joins back up with Daniel. This is where the heat turns up between them and OH MY these two were SCORCHING HOT!Just when things seem to be going well for them, we are thrown for a HUGE LOOP!And then ANOTHER and ANOTHER! This is where the story ends for now, yep with a cliffhanger that will have your jaw dropping to the floor and thinking NO! THAT JUST DID NOT HAPPEN!I am now going crazy with want for book 3, Hearts of Glass which should be released the end of April, early May. This IS a MUST read for me and I can hardly wait to read what will happen next.

I cannot even...Okay, let me just say that I so didn't expect that ending!Broken Glass takes it right from where the first book left us. Janie agrees to be part of Daniel's movie and their relationship starts growing. An unexpected event takes them both to Las Vegas. A situation arises and Janie has to contact her family. Daniel accompanies her and that trip is very critical for their special bond. They come closer and Janie's dreams look like they are finally coming true. But once again luck is not with her. Through a series of events, it seems like she is once again losing the love of her life. Before she knows it, Daniel is snatched away from her. But is he innocent in all this? Was he lying about everything? Or is it just some plot an outsider has conjured up?Read to find out!I loved the writing and this book was so worth the wait. I cannot wait for Hearts of Glass.4.5 Stars from me!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More Daniel Glass!!!! By Letty (CovertoCoverBookBlog) Broken Glass continues right where Shards of Glass left off. Daniel Glass has come back and is ready to take on the movie alongside Janie, both as director and her leading man. She is taken by surprise and still can’t come to terms with the idea that he might want something serious with her.The story moves along at a fast pace and so much happens in this installment. Some truths are revealed, and I’m sure people will be left with their mouths open, once they are hit with these twists. The passion between Daniel and Janie is high, and he shows so much determination to make her his, completely.I loved this second part and can’t wait to read what comes next. That ending was such a shocker. I still can’t believe what happened. Hurry Ari. I want my Glass!

In this 400 page book, James Thomas Flexner writes an in-depth biography of Sir William Johnson. "A scholarly, stirring, and brightly written study of one of the half-dozen most interesting figures in 18th-century America before independence. Full of color and incident, it illuminates Indian life, the colonial frontier, the wars with the French, the economic forces based on furtrading and land speculation, and the tangled relations of the crown, royal governors, and New World assemblies. The personality of the central figure, the indomitable Sir William Johnson, has never before been so effectively depicted."

Yet his contribution to what is now the United States of America is little known or appreciated as it ought to be, most likely because he was a loyalist. Without his contribution to the British victory over France in North America, the United States simply would not exist. Flexner provides us with a biography of this man that avoids the pitfalls of some of the exagerated Johnson legends by careful historical research. From the complicated family life of a man who never married his children's mothers, to his intricate involvement and dealings with the Iroquis Confederacy that held that Confederacy to the British side, Flexner presents a fascinating story of a side of American history many Americans are probably not aware of. You can not fully understand and appreciate American history without knowing about Sir William Johnson.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Feudal Frontiersman By Theo Logos Sir William Johnson, the greatest frontiersman of the American Colonial period, defied all of the stereotypes that we typically associate with the term. Rather than a rough hewn log cabin, he inhabited a feudal manor. In place of the proto-democratic individualism of our mythologized frontiersmen, he epitomized the clannish feudalism of his native Ireland. And rather than being a noted Indian slayer, he was an adopted Mohawk sachem, a chief both in war and peace, and one of the Native's greatest friends among the whites.Johnson ranks among the most important men of the entire Colonial period, rivaled in fame and influence only by Benjamin Franklin. He earned honor and respect from two worlds; made a Baronet for his service to England as the Crown's Indian Superintendent, and made a chief of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederation. His keen understanding of the strategic importance of the Natives to the balance of power in North America and his mastery of Indian diplomacy made him the single most important man to the victory of British Arms in America during the French and Indian War. Had he not died in 1774, on the eve of the American Revolution, he likely would have been a crucial, if not deciding figure in that conflict as well.James Thomas Flexner, who is best known for his outstanding, four volume biography of George Washington, here handles the fascinating life of Sir William Johnson just as brilliantly. From his prologue to his final sentence he grabs and holds the readers attention, weaving a gripping tale that is also illuminating history. He makes a strong case for Johnson's preeminent importance to the development of Colonial America and even to the eventual formation of The United States. Anyone with an interest in Colonial America, The French and Indian Wars, or The Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederation should consider this book a must read. It receives my very highest recommendation.Theo Logos

A Girl's Life in Virginia before the War, by Letitia M. Burwell

About the Author The author, Letitia M. Burwell (1810-1905), grew up at Avenel Plantation in Bedford, Virginia as one of the four daughters of William and Frances (Steptoe) Burwell. Built in 1838, her home, which was often visited by the famous Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, is on the National Register of Historic Places as well as the Virginia Landmarks Register, and is also one of the alleged haunted sites in the Roanoke area. No photographic image of Letitia is known to exist; however, beginning a year after her death, apparitions of a "Lady in White" have been reported on the property and in the house.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How far are Burwell's childhood perceptions and adult memories to be trusted? By Librarian Written in 1895, some 30 years after the end of the Civil War, this memoir by Letitia M. Burrell depicts a pre-War, plantation life-style that includes slavery -- but in a benign, non-critical way. In fact, her purpose in writing this memoir was to set the record straight with regard to what she perceived to be blantant misrepresentations in many publications relative to their depictions of slave-holders as evil people and their casting aspersions on the pleasant, Southern way-of-llfe she recalled having experienced and enjoyed as a young child. Thus, this is an account of how SHE regarded plantation life and slavery from her idyllic, childish, and privileged position, and (more troubling) how SHE later recalled it as an adult in the warm, transforming glow of memory. The problem is HER perceived and uncritically remembered "truth" does not conform to THE actual and complete historical truth regarding slavery, and this book will undoubtedly be upsetting to many readers who disagree with both her premise and her presentation. Some of today's readers may choose to condemn her and ignore her book. I think it better to read her depictions, seriously think about them, and compare them to those in more objective, well-researched treatments, as well as to first-person slave narratives from those who should know best; that way her perceptual errors can be fully recognized as such, and her book placed in proper historical context. Only by recognizing where Burwell is coming from at both stages of her life (as a child on a Southern plantation and as an adult writer of memories) can we understand the romanticized, fantasy-world nature of much of her account. This isn't how slavery actually was throughout the entire South, and very likely this is not how it REALLY was even on her own plantation had she been able to see beneath the surface through the eyes of an inquiring, unbiased adult. But perceptions and misperceptions (especially those originating in childhood), and decades-old memories subsequently based on them, can easily distort the truth, even (given enough time) turning what many folks would regard as the (very) bad old-days into something that a person like Burwell could refer to as particularly good ones. This is both a troubling book and a challenging one, and it is one that certainly raises many questions, such as: Can ANY memoir ever be fully trusted? How reliable and self-serving are anyone's (but particularly, in this instance, Burwell's) personal perceptions and recollections? To what extent can this book, given its erroneous views on slavery, be trusted as an eyewitness account about OTHER aspects of plantation life? How could Burwell (who wrote this book as an adult) be so blind to the inherent evils underlying the institution of slavery, even IF (to give her the benefit of the doubt) as a child she didn't personally see slaves being treated in a manner her youthful self could recognize as mistreatment? (For example, a slave shanty might have seemed pleasantly quaint and cozy to a child, not the miserable substandard hovel a conscientious adult should have recognized it to be, either then or later in mature retrospection. The child can be forgiven for her false impressions, but can we so readily forgive the adult writing about it uncritically many years later?) Given today's intense and outspoken demonization of Southern slavery, how is the modern, enlightened reader to regard an account like Burwell's that fails to villify it? What does Burwell's admiration for Robert E. Lee (about whom she chose to write at the end of the book) suggest about her lingering adult attitudes toward secession, the Confederacy, and the War? (In other words, is she an unrepentant Rebel?) And how might these attitudes have colored her depictions of pre-War slavery? Any consideration of such questions begins with reading -- not ignoring -- Burwell's book.FYI: There are numerous editions of this book available in the Kindle Store at various prices. I obtained my copy when one of them was being offered as a freebie; otherwise, the lowest-priced edition currently sells for $.99.

Excellent View into the Mindset of Slave Owners By Linda Fausnet I am the process of writing a paranormal romance involving ghosts in Gettysburg, and this book was very helpful for research purposes as one of my characters is a former slave. This book provides excellent insight into Southern thinking back in the 1860s. It's interesting to see how many whites truly thought it was their religious duty to educate and civilize black people. They really thought they were doing the right thing and at times felt burdened with their "task". This book is definitely worth the read, but of course you need to view it in it's historical context. It's incredible to see how these slave owners truly viewed themselves as noble. There are lots of head shaking moments when you ask yourself - what is the matter with these people?

Over the centuries, many of the world’s most celebrated writers have chronicled the life and times of the world’s first great metropolis – that remarkable city we call London. From the Roman historian, Tacitus, to the diarist Samuel Pepys, to Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle, these luminaries of the literary world have all, in their own unique way, contributed to the vast canon of London description we now have at our disposal. But perhaps it was Samuel Johnson who most effectively distilled the unique and almost unquantifiable essence of the city when, in 1777, he wrote: “You find no man at all intellectual who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” And London has, indeed, seen and done it all. It has been the focus of attack by everyone from the Vikings and William the Conqueror to Adolf Hitler and the IRA. It was the nucleus of the Great British Empire, but for many years failed miserably to protect its poorest citizens from hunger, neglect and the horrors of child labour. London is, in short, a teeming, intoxicating mass of contradictions – and for this reason, love the city or loathe it, one cannot help but admire it. In this Short History of London Sinead Fitzgibbon comprehensively chronicles the eclectic evolution of the city, from the arrival of the Romans circa AD50 and the rise and fall of the Anglo-Saxons, to the profoundly destabilising era of Henry VIII, right through to development of the modern metropolis we know today. ‘An intriguing read; at once concise and brimming with fascinating detail.’ – Richard Foreman, author of the best-selling ‘Swords of Rome’ series. Sinead Fitzgibbon is an author and critic. Several of her titles have been published as part of the bestselling 'History In An Hour' series. She also regularly writes reviews for a host of newspapers, magazines, websites, and journals. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Succinct, well-written and highly recommended By Gibson, W There are a lot of books on London and its history but none so succinct as this. Yet for its shortness, and after all the title makes it plain that it is a short read, one isn't left feeling short-changed. Quite the contrary - everything is covered: from the coming of the Romans, including Boudicca, to the multicultural city that it is today... and everything in-between (the Great Fire, Victorian London, the world wars, etc.)Especially fascinating was the chapter entitled `Subterranean London' - from secret tunnels to hidden rivers. Apparently, there are `thirteen waterways that gush beneath the city'. Never knew that. In fact, there's a lot in this book that I had no idea about.By the end of it, I felt fully versed in the history of this magnificent city and rather proud to be one of its inhabitants. The biographies make a great read - William the Conqueror, Shakespeare, Samuel Pepys, King George IV, Charles Dickens, Churchill, Henry Beck, who designed the iconic London tube map, to the capital's most notorious villains - Jack the Ripper and the Kray Twins. There's even a great biography on Big Ben and how the massive bell was cast and how it got its name. It's a wonderfully well written. You feel that you're being told a story. The author has a lovely and even friendly turn of phrase which made reading this book an enjoyable and entertaining experience.Highly recommended.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good, but by no means perfect By Gracie An easy, quick read. However, either the author didn't do her research or her editor was out to lunch. In the bio of Winston Churchill she calls him a second son. He was the eldest; in fact his mother was probably pregnant with him on her wedding day. Worse she wrote that Churchill had a close partnership with Teddy Roosevelt. By WWII Teddy had been dead for some twenty years and Franklin Roosevelt was hardly some obscure official.Such blatant errors makes me wonder how many more there are. A book of facts should be trustworthy.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A poor book. Show nothing about the magnificent and mysterious ... By Sania A poor book. Show nothing about the magnificent and mysterious history of the city. Hate it. Do you even know London?

Without Yesterday: Mona's War is a novel combining fiction with well-researched historical detail. During the Second World War in occupied France, the Gestapo, aided by the Milice, confronts resistance groups determined to achieve liberation. Two young women from vastly different backgrounds, victims of Nazi reprisals, meet under dramatic circumstances. Struggling to survive in a cauldron of lies and deceit where trust is a rare commodity, one has the opportunity to save the life of the other at the expense of her own life. Honesty and trust become rare qualities; everyone has choices to make with no guarantee of a secure outcome. Time is precious, lives are at stake and a Nazi leader is attempting to protect his future, unaware of its consequences. This compelling novel is a stark reminder of the dark years of WWII in occupied France by an author who takes the reader on a journey from the aftermath of the Great War to the barbarism of the Nazis during the occupation of France in WWII.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Gripping Story of Life, Love and Resistance under Nazi Occupation! By Hobnails This book, which I bought directly from the author, tells a gripping story of German occupation of the most rural area France as it affected the lives of the inhabitants and the two principal characters in particular.Thorough research of the occupying forces, their French acolytes and the local resistance movements has enabled the author to weave his story through the lives of actual people and real events such that the reader is unable to distinguish the fact from the fiction. It tells of the barbarism by which the Nazis controlled the region. The characters are solid and credible with their most tender emotions depicted with sensitivity. This is an enjoyable read with a surprising ending. Images of Violette Szabo, the SOE agent captured, interned and executed at Ravensbruck at the time of the liberation of France came to mind, however this is not a story of that gallant lady. With so many small place names mentioned I imagine a person who does not know the area would find a small sketch map helpful, showing the relative geography of one place to another. Perhaps the author might consider including this in a future edition. This is a compelling story of love, fortitude and generosity of the human spirit in the most adverse of situations and conditions. Thoroughly recommended.

By Ray Sanders If you are set to take the College Basics Academic Subjects Examination and don’t have all the time in the world to study, then you may want to think about purchasing this book to help you out. This is a shortcut to help you out in studying for this exam and is very comprehensive. It covers everything from Social Studies, Math, and English. Little rules that you don’t remember are covered in this book. It is great and definitely a wise purchase for anyone studying to take this test. It is very comprehensive in the subject matter covered and will help you to have a good review. The book is written by exam experts and I can believe it! They covered every little nuance that is covered in school. Things that are taught but not used every day. I couldn’t believe how much I had forgotten and I was so glad that I purchased this book to give me a very comprehensive refresher. I especially liked the math part of the book, because math is not my strong suit and it went over the various math rules and the different types that would be covered on the exam. The English section of the book reminded me a lot of the exam review books that I used in college. This is a great guide, but make sure you purchase the latest edition so that it has the most current information in it.

On a dark night in February of 1864, the H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat, torpedoed the Union blockade ship USS Housatonic, a feat that would not be repeated for another 50 years. But fate was not kind to the Hunley that night as it sank with all of its crew on board before it could return to shore. Considered by many to be the Civil War’s greatest mystery, the Hunley’s demise and its resting place have been a topic of discussion for historians and Civil War buffs alike for more than a hundred years.Adding still more to the intrigue, the vessel was discovered in 1995 by a dive team led by famed novelist and shipwreck hunter Clive Cussler, sparking an underwater investigation that resulted in the raising of the Hunley on August 8, 2000. Since that time, the extensive research and restorative efforts underway have unraveled the incredible secrets that were locked within the submarine at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.Join Civil War expert Brian Hicks as Sea of Darkness recounts the most historically accurate narrative of the sinking and eventual recovery ever written. Hicks has been given unprecedented access to all the main characters involved in the discovery, raising, and restoration of the Hunley. Complete with a foreword and additional commentary by Clive Cussler, Sea of Darkness offers new, never-before-published evidence on the cause of the Hunley’s sinking, providing readers a tantalizing behind-the-scenes look inside the historic submarine.

Sea of Darkness: Unraveling the Mysteries of the H.L. Hunley, by Brian Hicks

Review “The comprehensive story of the Confederate submarine HL Hunley from the first rivet until today. This is a must-have book for anyone who loves submarines, appreciates American history, or wants to learn more about the HL Hunley. I could not put this book down, and neither will you once you start to read it!”—Wreck Diving Magazine“Brian Hicks’s unique perspective provides the true story of the Confederate submarine remembered as the Hunleyfrom the beginning to the present. Through exacting research he reveals a fascinating phenomenon that provides an intellectual adventure. His every detail is visibly accountable as he preserves the time period with intimate research of the people and the undersea vessel that forever changed the history of naval warfare.”—Clive Cussler, best-selling adventure novelist and founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency“Never was an author better positioned or better prepared to write such an engaging and entertaining history. Hicks is an accomplished writer by trade, a Southern history buff by avocation and a close friend of many of the key movers and shakers who found, raised and are now restoring the submarine … There will always be unanswered questions, but all of the answers we do have are artfully woven together in Brian Hicks’ [Sea of Darkness].”—Frank L. Cloutier, The Post and Courier (Charleston, SC)“Through skillful interweaving of the past and the present, Sea of Darkness illuminates the murky waters of the American Civil War. Hicks delivers an accurate, detailed account of military history that reads like an adventure novel, with a vibrant cast of characters and a storyline that will transport readers into the depths of naval warfare.”—Colonel W. Hays Parks, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired“The Hunley project is about discovery. It’s about learning what history can teach us. This project shows us what science, innovation, technology, and the human spirit can make possible. It is about courage.”—Warren Lasch, Friends of the Hunley“… In Sea of Darkness, we go on a journey through time between the early 1860s, when men first dreamed up the idea of an iron submersible, to the modern preservation efforts to save the now 152-year-old ship, whose whereabouts lay shrouded in mystery for 131 years … In sections the book reads like a historical adventure novel, with all the suggestive and pensive undercurrents of the doomed ship and crew. But Hicks’ true story also pieces together facts about the ship, theories on why she sank and details regarding the ongoing effort to reveal all the secrets the Hunley held for so many years.”—Paul Grimshaw, Grand Strand Magazine

I found his treatment of the formation of The Friends of the Hunley to be the best part of Hick's book By Chris This is author Brian Hick's follow-up to his 2002 book, Raising The Hunley, coauthored by Schuyler Kropf. HIcks has had access to the key players in the Hunley saga from the beginning, and is therefore well-positioned to tell the story of its discovery and conservation. That story has been covered by many authors, and I cannot say that any one of the recent works on the Hunley stands head and shoulders above the others. For those who have been "Hunleyfied" as Hicks characterizes those fascinated by the subject, any new information is devoured and digested with relish. Sea of Darkness is the latest offering since Tom Chaffin's 2008 The Hunley The Secret Hope of the Confederacy. The past five years has likely produced much new information from the scientists at the Hunley's Warren Lasch Conservation Center, but Hick's book is not about that. Those wanting the complete story of the conservation of the sub and its contents will have to wait until one of the scientists publishes such a work. That story is a moving target, and until the conservation is complete and the Hunley is ready for its home in a North Charleston museum, we won't have the "definitive" story on the sub's physical characteristics and conservation.I found his treatment of the formation of The Friends of the Hunley to be the best part of Hick's book. This is a subject which was not well covered in previous works, and without the establishment of this booster, fund-raising organization, the Hunley's recovery and conservation would have been impossible. Hicks gives us the story on Warren Lasch and the other movers and shakers who got the job done, and it is a fascinating exposition of the personalities, motivations, and competing interests of the people behind the artifacts.Sea of Darkness covers the early Hunley story, from its predecessors through its historic engagement with the Housatonic. The book shuttles between the nineteenth century and recent times, which serves to hold one's interest better than a purely chronologic narrative. There is nothing in the historical aspect which I found to be new, and the well-read Hunley fan will find it to be familiar ground from previous works. Again, its strength is the back story of the people who labored to bring the craft to the surface and expose her secrets. The greatest remaining secret, of course, is why the Hunley failed to return from her mission. Hicks cannot tell us the cause, for at this time no one knows, nor may we ever. He states that a failed forward seacock, noted by conservator Paul Mardikian, could have allowed the ingress of sufficient water to send the sub to the bottom. How long the sub's crew survived is still unanswered, and no one has been able to discount the observation of the Housatonic's lookout that a blue light marked the location of the Hunley after sinking his ship. This part of the tale is treated in greater depth by Chaffin's 2008 book. Hick's earlier claim that the bullseye lantern found aboard the sub was the source of the fabled "blue light" signal has been moderated in his latestbook, but he inaccurately claims that the lantern was the "source of the popular-and controversial-blue light legend" and that it could "direct a beam of light a great distance." In fact, the "blue light legend" predated the discovery of the sub's lantern by 135 years, and is popular because it has a strong historical basis in eyewitness testimony. What has been controversial is the modern myth that the sub's lantern was the source of the "blue light" signal. Once the lantern from the sub was conserved, it was obvious to the scientists that it could not make a blue colored light, and therefore was not a signaling device, but merely a common lantern used to illuminate the crew's nightly walk to and from the Hunley. In addition, the beam from such a lantern is much too faint to be seen over the four miles between the sunken Housatonic and the shore base where the Confederates had agreed to look for the Hunley's signals. Hicks does not mention that in 1864, "blue light" was a common pyrotechnic signal, visible up to fifty miles at night. Obviously, the "blue light" seen by the Housatonic's lookout, and the signals agreed upon by the Hunley and her shore crew, and the two blue lights described by a post-War Charleston newspaperman, were these pyrotechnic blue lights. The modern myth of the blue lantern has been discredited, just one more of the long-held Hunley "facts" which have been necessarily discarded in the face of research on the sub.Hick's writing style is entertaining and makes for easy reading. If you are a historian, however, and are accustomed to using footnotes and citations to corroborate an author's statements, you might find his system unusual. There are no citations in the narrative, so one has no immediate means to identify a statement which the author feels merits further explanation or historical source. There is a "Notes" section appended to the narrative, arranged by chapter and page, each citation identified by the several words beginning the pertinent material. I found this arrangement cumbersome and unintuitive, much inferior to the traditional use of superscripts in the narrative, which provides immediate notification in the text that what I am reading is referenced in previous works.Overall, this book will entertain the reader who is new to the Hunley story, but may disappoint those who have followed it from the beginning, only because it reworks the familiar, and there is so little of what the die-hard "Hunleyfied" crave: new information on the Hunley's fate. This is not so much a failing of Hicks, as the expectations and knowledge level of the reader. I hope that another five years will bring a book devoted to the physical findings in the sub, the process of their conservation, and a detailed treatment of what this tells us about the last minutes of the Hunley crew.

A Must-Read for Civil War Buffs By Nancy Hendrickson I've always found the story of the Hunley to be one of the most interesting (and horrifying) stories to come out of the Civil War era. The author's treatment of the development of the Hunley was of particular interest especially when taken side-by-side with the modern-day story of the submarine's discovery and recovery.Hicks' account of the new discoveries about the sub's sinking are fascinating - and backed-up with evidence few of us would ever have the opportunity to access. While investigations are ongoing, Hicks' book will provide Hunley fans with more than enough splendid detail to last until all examinations and investigations are complete. One of my favorite parts of the book was the incredible subterfuge taken to prevent looters from literally tearing the historic artifact apart. In addition, the efforts to put together a state-of-the-art laboratory for the recovered ship was a truly interesting read.I thought the author did an amazing job of putting together all of the pieces of this great mystery, while at the same time providing readers with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into an event that still holds fast to its mysteries.

Massey This is author Brian Hick's follow-up of his 2002 book, Raising the Hunley, with was coauthored by Schuyler Kropf. Hick’s has had a close relationship with the Hunley and an insider’s view of the saga as it has unfolded, with its secrets slowly revealed. For those of us who devour these type books whether ones interest is in the Civil War, submarines, or early technology, or all the above, this is your book. I cannot get enough of the Hunley and as Friend of the Hunley from its inception; I still grab everything that comes along, offering a new and improved version of the amazing vessels story.Every aspect of the Hunley, from its origin’s, to its crew, recovery, and the secrets it is slowly giving up, is fascinating reading. As one who has visited the Hunley several times since its recovery, Hick’s work just brings more of the story home, and answers lingering questions. If you have a “Hunley” library, or have never started one, then this is our book!

The Scottish Highlands form the highest mountains in the British Isles, a broad arc of rocky peaks and deep glens stretching from the outskirts of Glasgow, Perth and Aberdeen to the remote and storm-lashed Cape Wrath in Scotland's far northwest. The Romans never conquered the region, and in the Dark Ages the island of Iona became home to a Celtic Church that was able to pose a serious challenge to the Church of Rome. Few travelers ever ventured there, however, disturbed by the tales of wild beasts, harsh geography, and the bloody conflicts of warring families known as the clans. But after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden the influence of the clans was curbed and the Scottish Highlands became celebrated by poets, writers, and artists for their beauty rather than their savagery. In the nineteenth century, inspired by the travel reportage of Samuel Johnson, the novels of Walter Scott, the poems of William Wordsworth, and the very public love of the Highlands espoused by Queen Victoria, tourists began flocking to the mountains - even as Highlanders were being removed from their land by the brutal agricultural reforms known as the Clearances. With the popularity of hiking and the construction of railways, the fate of the Highlands as one of the great tourist playgrounds of the world was sealed.Andrew Beattie explores the turbulent past and vibrant present of this landscape, where the legacy of events from the first Celtic settlements to World War II, to the construction of military roads to mining for lead, slate, and gold have all left their mark.* Disputed Land: From Rob Roy, William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce, to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the clansmen who participated in the notorious massacre at Glencoe, the Highlands have provided the arena for centuries of conflict.* Folklore and Tradition: The wildness of the mountains has inspired a unique popular culture, from legendary tales of water-beasts and people with ''second sight'' to popular gatherings such as Ceilidhs and the Highland Games.* Scenic Inspiration: From visiting English poets such as Wordsworth and Byron, to native Scots writers such as Neil Gunn and Hugh MacDiarmid; from Turner to Mendelssohn; the scenery of the Highlands has inspired novelists, composers, poets, filmmakers, and artists through the centuries.

By lyndonbrecht This is the first book I've read in this series, which seems to be a couple of dozen so far. I'll read another or two, hoping they will be this good. Beattie's writing is crisp and sometimes wry. It really is about the Highlands, with the rest of Scotland as a presence offstage. The book is in four sections: Landscape, History, Imagination and Visitors. Landscape includes geology and it's a complex geology indeed. History is a rather long section, and it covers from the mysterious Picts to the coming of the Gaels to Bonnie Prince Charlie, the clearing of the glens (people thrown out and replaced with sheep) and to the present. Imagination includes Scotland as a memory, the idea of Scotland in poetry and novels--the common image of Scotland is largely a creation of the novelist Sir Walter Scott and the Romantic inclinations of Queen Victoria. Visitors looks at tourism, which goes back to the ilks of Boswell and Johnson's famed trip in the 1700s; this section includes the origin of tourism as well as some of the sites, and has some aspects of a tourist guide, while at the same time critiquing tourism. There's a good deal of discussion of the clearing of crofters out of the glens, a brutal and sometimes bloody process in the days of unregulated capital. The risings and such that led to the demise of Highlanders as a military threat are discussed. The reality of Highland life for most people appears to have been grinding poverty and endemic violence. It's common knowledge that "Scottish" items such as the plaid tartans are a creation of the later 1800s. There are some interesting details. I'm still foggy on the Lord of the Isles and why the Shetlands and Orkneys were Norwegian until the later 1400s, but this book helped me understand that a little better. Then there's the matter of Highlanders speaking Gaelic and Lowlanders what is essentially a dialect of English; the Highlanders anciently came from what is now Ireland, merging somehow with the Picts. Scotland has a rather more complex history than I had been aware of. Oddly, I'm reminded of New Guinea, where a very rugged terrain has made people in valleys next to each other essentially foreigners--Scotland's much smaller, much less ancient history but still very rugged terrain made Highlanders in neighboring valleys--glens--strangers and often enemies. The book has an excellent "further reading" section. The map is good but small, likewise the illustrations are good but small.
