About the Author John came west as a young man and settled in Berkeley where he graduated from the University of California. He still lives and writes there and often gives a talk on the California gold rush to the gang at the Freight and Salvage. He spent a lot of time digging into that gold rush too and many of his stories take place back then. John's characters are so real they'll jump right off the page and talk to you; his villains have hearts as cold as midnight and his heroes almost always do the right thing in the end. He's working up quite a reputation for his knowledge of that era too. His blog, My Gold Rush Tales, attracted the interest of some TV folks and he appeared in a segment for the Travel Channel about Henry Meiggs, the man who built San Francisco's famous Fisherman's Wharf. While his first novel, Hangtown Creek, a story of adventure, romance, and coming of age in the early days of the gold rush, was published in 2011, his brand new book, Into the Face of the Devil, moves between Hangtown and the sawmill where James Marshall first found gold, and pits a young man in love for the first time against a killer so evil he could pass for Satan.

What a heart I found in this historical fiction! I loved all the strong characters but Tom's heart, his courage, his strength and his love for spunky Miss Lacy rang out loud and clear. The dialogue is top notch, full of rich vernacular that awakened the sleeping cowgirl in me. My dad was cRaZy for Louis L'Amour novels and well, I guess John Putnam will be my favorite Western storyteller. Can't say enough about this mystery-suspense-action-romance. Well done! Loved it! Highly recommend!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read About the California Gold Rush for Any Age By BJ This story about the California Gold Rush is a great read for any age. I was particularly surprised by the innocence of youth during this period in US history; when growing up fast was the only way to survive. The lead character, Tom, is polite and vulnerable yet when put to the test shows himself to be a man. His head is turned by a new face in town, Lacey, who proves to be his match both in perseverance and goodness. Putnam has a way of infusing the dialog with language from the time to make it feel authentic. His descriptions of Coloma and Hangtown make you want to run out and see what’s left from that magical time. So if you can’t make a trip to the Sierra Nevadas to discover the Mother Lode, the next best thing is to read Into the Face of the Devil.

One thing that makes his writing stand out is his keen knowledge of the Gold Rush and the way he weaves historical fact and the sense of time and place into a story. He can put you right there, making Into the Face of the Devil a very visual tale. Because the reader can see it so well, some of the details can be distracting in the early going. The payoff comes as the story builds to a climax and your heart beats with our young hero Tom Marsh as he dispatches a villain that the author makes only too real.

Even better than Skea's first novel...A House Divided rings with suspense By The History Lady Margaret Skea has just this month published "A House Divided" - the sequel to her first novel; "Turn of the Tide," which I savored over several weeks and just finished this weekend. I loved the first book (see review here) and this one was, I thought, even better. That makes some sense - an author learns a lot between book one and book two. Skea has skillfully woven a gripping story set again primarily in Ayrshire about the Cunninghame-Montgomerie feud in a restless time period when superstition and witch trials were on the rise. She has done her research - knows the landscape, the history of the feud, and has given it all perfect context with the Munro's story."A House Divided" continues the story of the Munro family, forced into hiding from Glencairn's heir, the great arch-villain of the series, William Cunninghame. In the sequel, William Cunninghame has taken possession of the Munro home at Broomelaw and is rebuilding the tower and surrounding holdings for himself. Adam Munro is in France, fighting with the Scots Garde for the French Henri IV. Kate Munro has taken the surname Grant, and is living with her children at Braidstane - a Montgomerie stronghold.There's great dramatic tension from the get-go. Kate makes a living as a "wise woman" - a cross between a herbalist and midwife. It is a dangerous occupation in late 16th Century Scotland, where witchcraft trials have become commonplace. The trouble begins when Kate is called to help Margaret Maxwell, the wife of a Cunninghame supporter. It is an understatement to say that this good deed does not go unpunished, and leaves Kate and her family increasingly vulnerable to discovery. Kate is further put at risk when her reputation spreads and she is asked to attend to Queen Anne, the wife of James VI. Like any good healer she goes where and when she must - even with a high chance of seeing Maxwell and William Cunninghame there.I loved this book - the way the tension rose and dipped and then rose higher, dipped in brief resolution and rose again - finally to a great crescendo. I suspected early on what was coming but that in no way diminished the grip the novel had on me. I can't spoil it for you. I was on tenterhooks. I suppose I will never be sure what a novelist will do to their characters since Eddard Stark died, so I could not be sure of the ending. I was all-in for the journey - and you will be too.For lovers of Scotland, Scottish history, and historical fiction more broadly, this is a great read. It left me wondering what the Munro's will do next. That's a good sign - ready for no. 3!

Anderson Having thoroughly enjoyed 'Munro 1', aka 'Turn of the Tide', I delayed starting the sequel lest it delay my Christmas preparations and I was not wrong in my fears!! It is simply impossible to put down and whilst I was initially less interested in the French battle sections, I am full of admiration for Margaret's level of research which is apparent throughout. I actually became much more interested in these sections as the book progressed and was actually worrying on Munro's behalf as to how much longer King Henri would be prepared to cope without him!The descriptive prose takes the reader into so many places, from flood-ravaged countryside to prison cells, to dangerous cave networks and to plague-ridden Leith. There are so many intertwined relationships to keep the reader intrigued and compelled to keep reading, and the story shows that blood is not always thicker than water and that morality can triumph even in the face of extreme adversity. How will Munro and family fare in book 3? I cannot wait to find out and will aim to block out a few days of solid reading when the launch date is announced! Huge congratulations to Margaret for another excellent piece of historical fiction- a genre to which I was initially a reluctant newcomer but am now totally hooked!!

Rooted in well researched history it captures the character of a family feud in 16th century Scotland. As a follow on from Turn of the Tide it takes the reader to the next phase. Full of incident and intrigue. There is suspense and action. This would make a brilliant film.

I can't wait to see this beautiful and amazing place of Great Britain. I love the history of Scotland and don't ask about the famous whiskeys that are originally made here. The attractive beaches and fascinating mountains to climb for mountain climbers. Oh how I really love to come to Scotland because of this book. It really describes the place very well and efficiently. This is indeed the best guide book written for Scotland tourists. Great job.

In 1719, pioneer John Harris settled along the banks of the Susquehanna River and began a new era in the relationship between the inhabitants of what would later become the Greater Harrisburg area and a river that would provide them with economic opportunity, leisure, and sometimes misery. Spanning the Susquehanna in the 19th century were bridges that funneled raw materials and a growing workforce in the capital city, which thrived during the age of industry. However, the late 19th century brought a shift toward revitalization and beautification of the riverfront and islands with the construction of the Riverfront Steps, Dock Street Dam, beaches, parks, and gardens that were showcased through large public events such as the Kipona festival. This revitalization was again renewed in the late 20th century with the reimagining of City Island as an entertainment complex hosting concerts and sports franchises such as the minor-league baseball team the Harrisburg Senators.

About the Author Frank Marra worked at the Staten Island Landfill World Trade Center Recovery Site from September 2001 until February 2002, an experience that served as inspiration for From Landfill to Hallowed Ground: The Largest Crime Scene in America. His law enforcement career included seventeen years with the New York City Police Department and the rank of Detective and then Lieutenant. He was born in Staten Island, New York, and currently resides in Millstone, New Jersey, with his wife Laura and three sons, Anthony, Dominic, and Frank. Maria Bellia Abbate, inspired by Frank's experiences at the Recovery Site, was eager to assist in helping to put all his stories and memories together to create From Landfill to Hallowed Ground. Currently she is a teacher in Staten Island. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Maria lives in Millstone, New Jersey, with her husband Michael and her three children, Alexa, Michael, and Delilah.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A vivid reminder By S. Wolfington A well written account of the aftermath and recovery operation following 9/11. Graphic in parts and enlightening on something I was unaware of, it tells the sad personal account of one mans experiences helping search, identify and eventually oversee some of the rubble that remained of the twin towers. I thought this would be a tough emotional read, but it was so factual this for me while very sad was not upsetting. Thank you for sharing your experiences, these memories need to be preserved to remind future generations of the horror of 9/11. I also hope this brought some healing and closure of its own to the authors and will comfort families of the victims.

I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero and the Landfill with my brother in law thenChief Anthony Marra shortly after 9/11. I learned so much more information from the book. My favorite chapter is the Red Cross Nurse. It is an interesting read and I highly recommend it.

Marra was one of those assigned to go through it. In this book he chronicles his experiences sifting through the debris and cataloging the vehicles, some crushed and some intact. The subject is fascinating and humbling but the book fell short of my expectations.There is a lot of general information but not enough anecdotes. It would have been a much better book if Marra had spoken with more people who also worked the Landfill. The book would benefit from more stories like that of the woman who came to Staten Island with her children to sit in her late husband's car. There aren't enough meaningful passages like that one. The photographs are generic and add nothing.These seem like paltry quibbles in light of Marra's service to NY and the world, but it's an expensive book for what you get. Thank you, sir, for your service, and for giving us a glimpse of what it was like working the Staten Island Landfill. I would have liked to know a lot more.

About the Author Harry Gratwick is a seasonal resident of Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay. A retired teacher, Gratwick had a forty-five-year career as a secondary school educator. Harry is an active member of the Vinalhaven Historical Society and has written extensively on maritime history for two Island Institute publications, the Working Waterfront and Island Journal. Gratwick is a graduate of Williams College and has a masters degree from Columbia University.

Murray Very informative, well researched and well written. The story of Mowat, who bombarded Falmouth (now Portland) in 1775 is not well known, but sheds a great deal of light on British operations on the North American coast at the time of the Revolution. Well worth reading for anyone interested in naval history, the Revolution, or the history of Maine.

You could say she is wild at heart- yet spiritually awake (Think “Sex in the City” meets “Eat, Love, Pray”). Some might say these 2 are polar opposites – Heidi is somewhat timid in nature and an atheist due to the unspeakable tragedy which was bestowed upon her little brother. She is married with children and leads a very traditional life and is suffering from apathy and boredom. Fatima on the other hand thrives on excitement and adrenaline. As a result of a mortifying encounter she had with Mark Zuckerburg, Fatima despises Facebook and processes what happens through her letters to Heidi. These unfiltered hand-written letters to Heidi keeps their childhood relationship evolving long-distance. To Fatima’s shock, her life changes forever as she ends up in a passionate love affair with someone whom she regarded as “off limits” and “taboo”. FROM THE AUTHOR: The main message I wanted to portray in EUPHORIA, is that love transcends skin color, religion, beliefs, values, gender and species. That is, pure love is universal, holds no boundaries and is infinite. In 2011 my childhood best friend gave me over 100+ hand written letters, notes, cards... which we wrote to each other since elementary up until present day- adulthood. My book, EUPHORIA is inspired from this collection of earnest and exposed hand written letters from a pair of unlikely and dissimilar best friends. My prose is influenced by Leonard Cohen's experimental novel, Beautiful Losers which he wrote in the early 1960's before he went on to become a famous musician and Canadian icon.

Couldn't stop reading it.The Story is very compelling. The first few pages it's just you are reading letters between Fatima and Heidi who are best friends since early childhood. You get to know much Information about Fatima's life and her often changing boyfriends. It's not the real with each of them. From time to time the letters between them two got deeper and deeper and more emotional. At some parts of the book I felt like "Wait, this could be me in some parts" I smiled so often and was super happy when the Story had their Highlight.I really loved reading this short but great book. Can't wait for more.Lisa, congrats on this well done short novel!Sandra N.

By Siss I really enjoyed reading 'Euphoria and Other Human Longings', as well as I enjoyed Lisa's first book 'Her Apparitions & Other Human Longings'. Just like the previous book, this one also takes a short time to read and is easy to understand, written in a smooth flowing style.The story is about two different characters, connected by a very strong friendship since their childhood and transforming it into an everlasting bond.In 1990s, the characters used to be in touch through letters (that make significant part of the book). Since then, they both had been living their own lives, filled with turns and challenges, in different cities.Recently, one of the characters decided to deactivate her Facebook account and so she wrote a letter to her childhood friend again.As life moved on, their lives got quite balanced but both of them felt like they were not living to the fullest. They were still looking for something else, trying to find their solid ground...

About finding yourself, about friendship, about finding happiness and about true love.I read it in less than 24 hours, just because I couldn't put it away!! I just loved it!!The writing style is great and easily understandable even for a person who doesn't have English as their first language.It's a very inspirational book which I can only recommend!There's only one negative thing about the book, and that is that it's way too short, haha ;)I also read Lisa's first book "Her Apparitions and Other Human Longings", and just like I loved that one, I love this book as well.Congrats Lisa, you did it again!! Can't wait to read more from you! :)

Nutrition data details stumped me By Strom I have always been interested in nutrition and diets so it only made sense that I would want to study to become a certified dietary manager. When it came time to take the certification test, though, I was nervous. I didn't want all of my hard work to go to waste if I didn't pass the test. I really needed my certification in order to get a good job. I knew there were some areas that I was struggling with and I wanted to make sure I studied the right things. A friend told me she found a decent study guide online and when I searched for it, I actually found one that is probably much better. This study guide had so much information in it that it seemed a little overwhelming. But once I read through it all, I realized it was better this way. I had everything I needed in one place. Learn this ONE study guide and I'd be set! One part I'd struggled with was the abbreviations used for dietary needs in charts. Some of them just didn't make sense to me. The study guide went over them and exampled them all and once I read and re-read them several times, they started to stick in my head. Any of the other nutrition data details that stumped me before suddenly seemed clear. I know this study guide helped me do well on the test, but even more importantly, I think I'm going to do well on my future job too.

I finished my class and had to wait for the test and this book really got my organized and helped with the test. it is well worth the money. I will recommend this book over and over.

About the Author Mark C. Carnes received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his PhD in history from Columbia University. He has chaired both the history and American studies departments at Barnard College, Columbia University. Carnes and Garraty were General Editors of the 26-volume American National Biography, for which they were awarded the Waldo Leland Prize of the American Historical Association. Carnes has published numerous books on American social and cultural history, including Secret Ritual and Manhood in Victorian America (1989), Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1995), Novel History: Historians and Novelists Confront America’s Past (2001), and Invisible Giants: 50 Americans That Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books (2002). Carnes also pioneered the Reacting to the Past pedagogy, winner of the Theodore Hesburgh Award, sponsored by TIAA-CREF, as the outstanding pedagogical innovation in the nation (2004). In Reacting to the Past, college students play elaborate games, set in the past, their roles informed by classic texts. (For more on Reacting, see: www.barnard.edu/reacting.) In 2005 the American Historical Association named Carnes the recipient of the William Gilbert Prize for the best article on teaching history. The late John A. I think it should be translated to film because the setting in the early 1900s in the San Francisco Bay Area is intriguing and very exciting. It has a positive message for youth of any time period, including today. The book reminds me of Huckleberry Finn in San Francisco.However, I do not like the book layout from the publisher General Books LLC. The clumsy layout, lack of illustrations, gives the story no justice! The intro does explain why this publisher uses no illustrations and how they are economical in producing huge numbers of classics with a scanning machine. However, there are terrible line breaks in the book. The style of this book is not my cup of tea, but I am sure others wouldn't mind it to save a penny. I'd rather read this book on Kindle or check the book out from the library, than own this plain and clumsy copy!

Each book starts off with a different daughter with a bounty on their heads by their father. They don't know he is their father until people try to kill them. I got the set because I thought it was the whole series but it's not. Each book is by a different author. Great story was great but all cliff hangers. All about paranormal world.

I really liked the story lines. I am confused on the reading order, though. Looking at the selections they are a little haphazard. I will probably buy after I figure it out.

Bad ASS and love that they each have a little something more than just being vampires!! Loved the story on each one and that another author gave their insight to that individual sister. I'm ready to get into the rest of the story and can't wait!! This is definitely for adults!! If you're looking for sex, murder, leather and strong women, this has it all!! It really bothers me when I see reviews that insult the author for the R-RATED language, violence and sex!! Read the description people!!! This is a wild ride and edge of your seat page Turner!!! Off to read!! Chrissy Peebles, keep writing what's in your heart!! I'm now a very loyal fan!!!
