Raised by his monster of a step father he is forced to be a slave at the age of 9. To protect and guarantee the safety of his younger brother, Jack becomes a sexual slave that endures the beatings, rapes, and cruelty from his masters and mistresses.River is a woman on a mission. To right the wrongs of her father that sold her mother and others like her as a sexual slave, she risks everything to save slaves and give them a place to heal and be free. When River sees Jack being abused by a sadistic mistress, she will not stop till he is free from his tormentors. This was an epic story of innocence lost, redemption and strength. Jack was an amazing character that gave up his life for brotherly love. He could have found a way out instead he stayed and endured the abuse that was forced on him. I loved seeing him grow from a man child to a man that knows what it takes for him to be whole and let go of his past. He could have been so far gone but he was able to create and see beauty with his plants.River is a woman that seeks redemption and peace from someone else's cruelty. She did not have to go on this journey to right her father's wrongs but she knows it must be done. She is so patient and loving with Jack dealing with the confusion and mistrusts that lives inside him. But River is starting to question just what she feels for Jack, friend or lover? And is Jack ready for love and the feelings that come with that emotion? There are some serious heartbreaking moments in this book that just make you hurt and feel raw. But there are some really beautiful breath taking moments that over power the heartache. Well done Michelle Horst!

By Andra ***ARC received in exchange for an HONEST REVIEW and reviewed by me for Connected by Books***I'm a HUGE fan of dark stories, and it saddens me to say that, in my opinion, this book has been badly categorized - it's neither dark, nor suspenseful. But I still read it and here are my thoughts. While the blurb is well written, the execution left a lot to be desired. Maybe my expectations were too high, but when an author tells me I'll be disturbed by some scenes in the book, I want to be disturbed, disgusted and left wondering WTH has just happened.Told in dual POV, I found 'Saved by Her' to be a sweet, fast read, with interesting enough characters, but due to the short length of the novel, I didn't have enough time to fall in love with them (the book ended at 69% on my kindle - for me that's novella length).Jack and River both have awful backgrounds that weren't explored enough, in my opinion. Their love story was so rushed, that I didn't even see it coming. Jack moved on so fast from the tortured soul that he was, that it felt like he had a split personality disorder. The secondary characters were mere caricatures, it was hard to connect with any of them - Adam would've been an interesting one to explore, but I was just left blah about him.The climax for this story it was so anticlimactic - I was reading waiting for something dark and twisted to happen, and that never came - the entire story felt like a YA take on dark reads.I'm sorry for not being able to rate the story higher, I'm honestly still trying to figure out what rating to leave, but I think I'll give it a generous 3 star as I believe that the author has potential, but she needs to work harder on the execution, and categorize her novels accordingly.

By Revenge of the Feels Once you start Saved By Her, you won’t be able to stop! There is no going back once you start reading this Monster novel! This is the first novel that I have read from dark romance author, Michelle Horst, and her writing has blown me away! It’s so addictive that I find it impossible to stop!I have so much raw feelings and emotions right now because, Saved By Her is my first novel that I have finished in under an hour! It takes me at least two hours to finish reading a novel but this? Saved By Her?IT’S TOO BEAUTIFUL!This is the kind of novel that will break your heart so much that only weeping in silence would be able to express how you feel. Not sobbing out loud, wailing or crying, but weeping in silence as you find out how Jack and Sophia has suffered at the hands of the people who make them do the things they do.River and Jack are the two people that makes me cry so much. What Jack and River has been through; the only thing Jack has known in his life, the things River do to give back for what her father has done, my heart weeps for them. In so many ways, Jack is innocent. His innocence is the one thing that attracts me the most. I have never read about any characters in any novels with someone like Jack. Physically, he has lost that innocence. Yet mentally, he is innocent in so many aspects, almost like a child. That child-like innocence makes me want to hug him so tightly and it almost broke my heart when River and Jack had that one fight.River might not have been through what Jack has, but the things she saw, did and done, she too, makes me want to hug her so badly. River is a strong woman, but only because her past had made her that. She’s like Jack. Both of them losing their innocence yet at the same time, keeping some parts of it.Saved By Her is a wonderfully well-written novel, both emotionally and story wise. I’m definitely looking forward to more of the Monster novels and Michelle Horst’s books! This novel is highly recommended for fans of suspense romance novels and Pepper Winter’s Monsters in the Dark series!

THE RISE AND FALL OF NAUVOO is a companion volume and stands in historical sequence to "The Missouri Persecutions." It was written with the same object in view, viz., "To place in the hands of the youth of the Latter-day Saints a full statement of the persecutions endured by the early members of The Church in this last dispensation; * * * that they may be made acquainted with the sacrifices which their fathers have made for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ." And I indulge the same hope with reference to this book that I did with respect to "The Missouri Persecutions," viz., that by "becoming acquainted with the story of the sufferings of the early Saints, the faith of the Gospel will become all the more dear to the hearts of their immediate posterity, and all the youth of Zion, for many generations to come."[1]

Roberts' classic account of the Mormon establishment in Illinois and subsequent expulsion from the state is tendentious, impassioned, and plain-spoken; and these are some of the qualities that make this riveting book so notable. Roberts' writing constitutes a refreshing antidote to the modern ivory-tower academic approach to Mormon history, which too often feigns impartiality while betraying an underlying anti-Mormon bias, and even blaming the Mormons for their own difficulties. Not so with Roberts, who does not hesitate to call traitors traitors, dishonor dishonor, and courage courage. The Mormon expulsion from Illinois is not myth but reality, and Roberts' treatment of it is indignant yet measured. The very commentary that offends the academicians' sensibilities is what makes his writing memorable. To many Americans, the story of a religious group being expelled by mobocratic and military force from the country with the approbation of state and federal authorities is contradictory to assumed ideas of liberty, tolerance, and civil rights. Roberts' account is an eye-opener in this respect, as he details "the scene of a people in free America--the boasted asylum for the oppressed, where religious freedom is guaranteed by express constitutional provision--fleeing from the worst forms of oppresion..."; if it could happen then, why not now?The text reviews all the well-known events, but also includes sporadic character development and interesting notations, such as the observation that Stephen Markham's name seemed to inspire fear in anti-Mormon ears. Roberts' treatment of the Battle of Nauvoo is a notable portion that has received less attention in similar histories. While other Nauvoo histories are better documented and less partisan, this one will remain a classic for its direct and graphic detailing of religious persecution in America. For this reason alone it is a book that should be read twice--by both Mormon and non-Mormon Americans alike.

He was able to mix the good and the bad, the agony and the ecstasy of the history of Nauvoo: the City of Joseph.I think that Elder Roberts was born in the right time to write such a book. He knew many of the displaced citizens of Nauvoo, but he also knew that many of the rising generation needed to know about this great phase in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ. This book has the feel of Elder Roberts' "History of the Church," and "Comprehensive History of the Church." It has a strong reliance on Joseph Smith's journals and diaries, and other primary sources. Moreover, Elder Roberts was not afraid to cite critical sources-or even anti-Mormon sources in telling his story. He was very careful to avoid the sensational and untrue "faith promoting rumors" that fill our testimony meetings. The only criticism is that there are no illustrations, which is more a fault of technology than a bad judgment call. It was harder to print pictures in the 1900 than it is now.

This has detailed and deep personal accounts of LDS church history and the personalities and actions of its leaders and members of the time. This isn't through the cleansing filter of a historian, but of people that actually witnessed and experienced what happened. I posses the entire church history volumes, but consider this so much more informative, and that makes this easier to comprehend and relate to.Whereas a typical history reads like you are reading a history book of a people of the past, this makes you feel like you are reading a letter from someone that just went through it.

Best Ebook Dunmore's New World: The Extraordinary Life of a Royal Governor in Revolutionary America--with Jacobites, Counterfeiters, Land Schemes, Shipwrecks, ... Royal Weddings (Early American Histories), by James Corbett David

Dunmore's New World tells the stranger-than-fiction story of Lord Dunmore, the last royal governor of Virginia, whose long-neglected life boasts a measure of scandal and intrigue rare in the annals of the colonial world. Dunmore not only issued the first formal proclamation of emancipation in American history; he also undertook an unauthorized Indian war in the Ohio Valley, now known as Dunmore’s War, that was instrumental in opening the Kentucky country to white settlement. In this entertaining biography, James Corbett David brings together a rich cast of characters as he follows Dunmore on his perilous path through the Atlantic world from 1745 to 1809.

Dunmore was a Scots aristocrat who, even with a family history of treason, managed to obtain a commission in the British army, a seat in the House of Lords, and three executive appointments in the American colonies. He was an unusual figure, deeply invested in the imperial system but quick to break with convention. Despite his 1775 proclamation promising freedom to slaves of Virginia rebels, Dunmore was himself a slaveholder at a time when the African slave trade was facing tremendous popular opposition in Great Britain. He also supported his daughter throughout the scandal that followed her secret, illegal marriage to the youngest son of George III―a relationship that produced two illegitimate children, both first cousins of Queen Victoria.

Within this single narrative, Dunmore interacts with Jacobites, slaves, land speculators, frontiersmen, Scots merchants, poor white fishermen, the French, the Spanish, Shawnees, Creeks, patriots, loyalists, princes, kings, and a host of others. This history captures the vibrant diversity of the political universe that Dunmore inhabited alongside the likes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. A transgressive imperialist, Dunmore had an astounding career that charts the boundaries of what was possible in the Atlantic world in the Age of Revolution.

Review

Dunmore’s New World is the best new book-length work in early American history that I have seen in more than a decade. The author’s impressive new research offers a view of Revolutionary North America as revealed through the experiences of a remarkably able, knowledgeable, skillful, and deeply flawed imperial operative.

(Robert M. Calhoon, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, author of Dominion and Liberty: Ideology and the Anglo-American World, 1660–1801 )

Interweaving engaging narrative episodes and analysis, James Corbett David may indeed be part of a new scholarship which restores the drama of the Revolutionary War by making it much less one-sided.

(Andrew O’Shaughnessy, Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, author of The Men Who Lost America: British Leadership, the American Revolution, and the Fate of the Empire)

In this telling, Dunmore is no drunken fool who lost an empire nor a great emancipator. He is a man of empire, creating and caught by webs of patronage, ambition, and family. David’s deep familiarity with the historiographies of the British Empire, the American Revolution, Native America, slavery, and the family makes the book cutting-edge scholarship. His vivid writing and well-crafted plotting make it a page-turner.

(William & Mary Quarterly)

When John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, was named royal governor of Virginia in 1771, America’s revolutionary spirit was evolving from flicker to flame.... David’s book provides a rich look at the man and his role in the American Revolution.

(Richmond Times-Dispatch)

David Sr. Dunmore is an interesting person but, even more interesting is this understudied time in American/British history that the book covers. Dunmore faced significant challenges while trying to manage the British new world foreign policy with little support from Britain. The story of land grants and Indian relations are fascinating. In the end Dunmore and his Government are overmatched by the events of the time. It is best read on a Kindle.I am not entirely unbiased because the author is my son.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Character Rehabilitation By Samuel J. Sharp I had reservations about "Dunmore's New World" given the hokey subtitle, but rest assured, the book is a serious work of scholarship. David seeks not to make a hero of Dunmore, but merely to add balance to the common understanding of Dunmore as the embodiment of colonial evil. It becomes clear that Dumore had few allies. His life was a series of squabbles with the Crown, American patriots, and later, Bahamanian political opponents. The book is a quick read and will appeal to readers with a deep interest in revolutionary America.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Narrative to Fill in Missing Piece of History By Stonewall I am thankful for this biography as it connects 3 places I know in Virginia. First, I grew up in Great Bridge. Second, I have lived within walking distance from the Kemp's Landing site for over a decade. Third, I have family living a few miles from Gwynn's Island. Lord Dunmore connects all three of these sites and this books fills in a missing piece of colonial history. The book is a well done narrative that connects the man to his times. It is more empathetic towards Dunmore than many previous American perspectives but you do see the flaws of this always grasping man. His imperious style also comes through clear which allows one to understand why the patriots would view him so dimly. The length was too short at times not allowing as much story to be understood. Instead of having 46 pages of notes for a 183 page narrative, I would like to see more of the details moved to the narrative. Overall a great story that opens up the multidimensional world of the British Empire in North America.

The move on the part of the US military, which began in 1996, to Network-Centric Warfare (NCW), meant the combination of sensor grids, C&C grids, and precision targeting to increase speed to command, and represented a military offset. Along with networking comes exposure to cyber attacks, attacks that will be used in future wars.

Enthralling read about the inevitability of a cyber 9/11 By Ben Rothke A point Richard Stiennon makes a number of times in There Will Be Cyberwar: How The Move To Network-Centric War Fighting Has Set The Stage For Cyberwar; is that cyber Pearl Harbor is the wrong metaphor. He feels a more appropriate metaphor is cyber 9/11.At 135 pages, the book is a quick and enthralling read. And at the end you are left wondering if just perhaps, there has already been a cyber 9/11.Much of the book describes the working of network-centric warfare (NCW). The main theory of NCW is to remove the fog of war via a sensor grid and a combination of precision-guided weapons, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and command and control. It’s that move to NCW that Stiennon believes has set the stage for an inevitable cyberwar. The book details how the US has spent billions in a run up to NCW, but seems to have forgotten that its underlying infrastructure (Windows, GPS, drones, etc.), were all built on insecure software. With that, the Pentagon has had numerous wake up calls, from malware on top secret networks, the Snowden debacle and more. Yet the reality is that the Internet and most military networks, as the book points out in detail, are quote porous.Much of the book deals with China, and their overt and covert attempts to penetrate US systems, networks and any intellectual property they can get their hands on.Chapter 8 on Assurance is a particularly fascinating chapter. While China has made it eminently clear that their goal is world domination, US firms and the US government have no qualms about outsourcing the manufacturing of key components to China.A both fascinating and horrifying point the book makes is that the US does not have a comprehensive program to certify that integrated circuits going into US weapons systems don’t contain malicious circuits. While DARPA is working on such a program, it’s still in its infancy; leaving US systems and military equipment at risk. The book brings to light a fact about the Hainan Island incident; the April 2001 incident of a midair collision between a Navy EP-3E and Chinese J-8II fighter. The result was that the crew of the EP-3E were not able to sanitize all of their equipment in time, which enabled the Chinese to ultimately reverse engineer the secret operating system used on the plane. By doing that, the Chinese has a road map for decrypting Navy classified intelligence and operational data.A cyber 9/11 is inevitable, and as There Will Be Cyberwar shows, it might just be closer than we think.

A Fascinating Read By Joseph Ponepinto The field of cyber espionage is evolving so quickly that most of us have little idea of how pervasive technology has become. Stiennon argues that given the abilities of technology, especially at the level of governments, cyberwar will be the next, inevitable method of combat. Considering the evidence he presents, it's pretty hard to disagree. The book is written in everyday language that is easy for either the executive or the layperson to understand. A must read if you care at all about the future of the internet and security.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A mile wide and an inch deep, but with some good points. By Lemas Mitchell This book was written as a rebuttal to Thomas Rid's (sorry) book Cyber War Will Not Take Place. There are a lot of things that Richard Stiennon deals with that have been dealt with in other books-- just not all in one place. And so that is an advantage of reading this book. But it can (and should) be supplemented with some other texts that explore the points that he has made more deeply. After someone has gone through those types of books, it is more difficult to be surprised by the things detailed in this book. The book starts with a hypothetical report that is made by the US military after defeat in the Taiwan Strait. They are reevaluating what (the author predicts) went wrong. (The Chinese show up again and again as villains in these stories. And they are that in real life.)Of the things that the author notes that have already been noted in other places:1. (pps. 34, 36). There is a lot of back and forth between the development of technologies and then the development of attacks against the security of those technologies. And then the development of a new level of security in response to those attacks. And then....... This topic was taken up by Simon Singh in The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography. Security technology has been evolving as a cat and mouse game for a long time. Maybe even a couple of millennia.2. (p. 40). Stiennon calls the lack of development of defense systems shortsighted and would prefer that technologies were proactively developed instead of reactively developed. But that's a bit like saying that a medicine should be invented and all of its side effects should be accounted for before it is released. Sometimes the only way to obtain knowledge is as a result of a crisis. (That is how the US learned about the various techniques that it developed to avoid real estate bubbles in light of the housing crisis.) The retrospective nature of knowledge was taken up by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book The Black Swan: Second Edition: The Impact of the Highly Improbable: With a new section: "On Robustness and Fragility" (Incerto). Ironically enough, this book was even mentioned in Stiennon's book. But it seems that the author did not draw the obvious parallel. The only way to know how to deal with a Snowden or a Manning was because you learned about what happened after it did happen. The next Snowden will be something else unpredictable.3. Going further on the epistemic foundations of security development: This issue of knowledge as a result of feedback mechanisms was also taken up brilliantly by Thomas Sowell in his Knowledge And Decisions. Not only is a lot of knowledge only "foreseeable" after the fact, but dealing with what happens after the fact is the only way to learn from disasters. It may be that the US has to suffer a military defeat to be given the opportunity to learn a lot of things. i. Is Taiwan really worth all the blood and treasure that they were willing to expend on it (given that China shows no signs of becoming democratic--ever); ii. What did we do wrong that allowed this to happen in the first place?; iii. What is the cost of not upgrading the military's security in a timely manner?4. There is a slap at the nature of democratic government. Yes, there are perverse incentives when the government is in a constant state of flux. No, people don't always vote for what will serve their best interests. The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies. But again: You cannot argue with people to whom democracy is a religion any more than you can argue with people for whom Islam is their religion. In the same way that Japanese learned that The Emperor was not divine with their WWII defeat, perhaps American people will learn that democracy is not the only way to do things when that is proven to not solve every problem and that you can't vote utopia into existence.5. We knew that the private sector does most things better than the State. That is old news. It could be found in any books by Milton Friedman (Capitalism and Freedom: Fortieth Anniversary Edition) or John Stossel. The fact that the private sector was more aggressive about protecting its source of income is not only unsurprising, but it's entirely predictable.6. There is something that is not explicitly stated, but is in the background in this book just the same: Sometimes decision making units reach the limits of what they are capable of. And that is not new. It was taken up by Joseph Tainter in The Collapse of Complex Societies (New Studies in Archaeology). (The same has also given presentations about how complex systems fail.) Given what we know about national variations in IQ, is it surprising that Western people would reach the limits of what they are capable of a bit faster than better organized Chinese?7. The trial and error nature of discovery is one that was detailed well in Tim Harford's Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. This failure of US intelligence agencies to get this right was portrayed negatively in this book, but it is exactly what you would expect given the size of that organization. And the fact that they are going to be slow learners is not unexpected given that they don't operate under the threat of going out of business and that the money that they lose is *someone else's* money.Of the book itself:1. There were several spelling mistakes as a result of the book's being self published.2. The topic was just a bit too technical. Most people won't understand it. If a reader read any two of the book that I noted earlier in the review, you could have deduced why predicting cyber attacks is next to impossible. And in that case, said reader would not have needed to read this book at all. But then......if someone had read none of those books and then came across this book the reasons for why cyber attacks are hard to predict would not have been brought across clearly from this writer's prose.3. The coverage of the (various) topics comes across as "a mile wide and an inch deep."4. The length of the average chapter was 7.6 pages, and the whole book can be read through in about 3 hours. Most of the references are links.Verdict: Recommended at the price of $1. The whole book only takes a few hours to go through, and there is really no one who can fail to get at least some information from it.

When Napoleon ended his exile on the Mediterranean island of Elba and marched defiantly back to Paris in 1815, his enemies were horrified. Faced with the prospect of being plunged back into the seemingly never-ending cycle of the Napoleonic Wars, they vowed to take decisive action. Wellington and Blucher approached the north eastern border of France with large armies, each determined to chase Napoleon from power once and for all. Rather than wait for the attack, Napoleon decided to engage the foreign forces ranged against him, and so began the Waterloo Campaign. Wellington later called it 'the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life', but he would nevertheless emerge victorious from the battle, consigning the defeated Napoleon to permanent exile in the distant island of Saint Helena. The Very Short History series gives the reader a clear, concise, and very short, account of the people and events that have shaped world history. Each book provides an entertaining and engaging narrative, allowing the reader to master the subject in the shortest time possible.

A great summary about one of history’s most infamous battles By Elise Macadam Waterloo: The Story of a Battle contains a concise, broad overview of everything you need to know about the build-up, event and aftermath of the Waterloo battle. Author Tristan Clark talks about the tactics, army sizes an where things went wrong for Bonaparte. It was interesting to hear about how the opposition leaders underestimated Napoleon Bonaparte, especially the speed at which his army moved at. The casualties’ opposition forces lost a Quatre Bras and Ligny certainly gave all the opposition forces a wakeup call. The chapter devoted to the battle of Waterloo explains each of the five phases in Waterloo. Although a long chapter, there is a lot of movement and excitement happening all the time. In a sense you feel as if you are watching a live re-enactment of the whole event. While it is chilling to think about the lives which were lost (in excess of 120,000), there are certainly lessons to be learnt from reading about it.Overall, it is a great read for anyone hoping to learn more about Waterloo and Napoleon Bonaparte.

By Colleen Waterloo: The Story of a Battle is a very detailed novel that successfully gives a multidimensional look at the different parties involved with the battle. It provides insight to why certain decisions were made, which is truly helpful when trying to understand the complexities of Waterloo. It was a very interesting historical read on Waterloo and I highly recommend due to the accuracy and step-by-step breakdown of the movements of the armies.

The best military transition field manual. A no-nonsense process for any transitioning military member that is based on real experiences. This audiobook is a true guide for what you need to know, not what an ACAP or TAP instructor has in their script

Every military service member will experience three phases as he moves from a military career to a life outside the gate: transition, transformation, and integration. The foundation of Boots to Loafers is built upon these three concepts. They provide the structure for the advice and guidelines I want to convey to you. You may experience each of these to different degrees depending on your wishes, circumstances, goals, and surrounding environment.

These three stages will vary from individual to individual, and they will be shaped by one's attitude and inner strength as well as his ability to manage the hurdles of life. From the first day you set foot into boot camp, no matter what service you have been in, until the final days of pre-deployment training exercises or redeployment, you are taught to always pay attention to every detail in every situation.

Our military knows how to turn you on and get you fired up for a mission. Transitioning out of boots will require the same focus on details and the energy to get fired up for your next mission, getting a job. More than a decade of war in God knows where in the world and many of America's treasure, our young men and women, will come home and be lost when it comes to preparing for their next fight - finding a job!

Many will leave the military voluntarily; more than 1.5 million will leave in the next five years. Boots gives them a helping hand, a guide: their new field manual that I never had when I retired from the US Army and entered corporate America. Let me help them find their new true north.

By Patrick John Phillips does a great job capturing the uncertainty that exists in transitioning Warriors and translating it into an easy to read, relevant guide. Through his experiences, John has seen and experienced first hand the challenges of making the personal shift from Soldier to corporate leader. I highly recommend this book to any military service member looking to begin their new career outside the military. It's really a process rather than an event, and LTC Phillips does a phenomenal job of discussing it in his book. Do yourself a favor and buy it today!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Accurate and helpful By Chris J. Woltermann I'm not a veteran and don't claim to understand the issues vets face making the transition to a civilian career but I listened to this audio book and found that it was full of very relevant information about the civilian job sector. As a hiring manager I found the descriptions of benefits, interoffice dynamics, and interview/hiring practices to be accurate and up to date. This would be a useful book for new college graduates as well.I have close friends who made the transition from ~20 years in the Air Force to civilian jobs and they expressed many of the same concerns addressed in this book before making the change. Most of the veterans I've worked with have proven to be well prepared, disciplined employees.

Lincoln and Grant is an intimate dual-portrait of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant: their ordinary "Western" backgrounds, their early struggles to succeed, and their history-making relationship during the Civil War. Though generally remembered by history as two very different personalities, the soft-spoken Lincoln and often-crude Grant in fact shared a similar drive and determination, as this in-depth character study illustrates.

Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War, by Edward H. Bonekemper III

Review "Among the great duos of American history -- Lewis and Clark, Washington and Lafayette, Lee and Jackson -- the unlikely partnership of Ulysses Grant and Abraham Lincoln has received almost nothing in the way of direct examination. Their worlds were so separate that, apart from the Civil war, they might never have met. Yet, here were two men from the same adopted state, with the same unusual capacity to absorb disappointment and failure, and the same single vision for winning the Civil War. As Edward Bonekemper shows in his usual straightforward and uncluttered fashion, this odd couple brought together the political and military energies of the American republic in an unstoppable combination. Their linked histories have been Bonekemper's special study, and Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War is the monument to that study." - Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director, Civil War Era Studies Program, Gettysburg College"Nobody knows the Civil War -- or brings it alive so successfully -- as Ed Bonekemper. Thorough research and meticulous documentation always back up a clear, strong, unambiguous point of view about the War and the individuals who fought it. Lincoln and Grant is the latest addition to a distinguished collection of works exploring this watershed period in the history of our nation." -- Dr. Peyton R. (Randy) Helm, President and Professor of History, Muhlenberg College"With this book, Ed Bonekemper continues his studies of Ulysses S. Grant. Once again, he demonstrates the general's many talents. This new book's linking of Grant with Lincoln is insightful, and Civil War readers will not want to miss this page-turner." -- Dr. John F. Marszalek, Executive Director of the Ulysses S. Grant Association, Mississippi State University"Bonekemper's finely crafted, first-of-its kind analysis, ably illustrates how similar life experiences and shared values forged an iron-clad relationship between the indomitable duo of Lincoln and Grant. This book weaves together the complex tapestry of how these two Westerners were able to restore the Union and end the South's peculiar institution." -- Prof. Jonathan A. Noyalas, author of Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign: War Comes to the Home Front and other Civil War books"This unique examination, a dual biography merging strategic and political concerns with the course of winning the Civil War, will give every student of the conflict another opportunity to ponder how that war was won. Indeed, Lincoln and Grant were the Westerners who won the Civil War." -- Theodore P. Savas, Esq., award-winning author"With this book, Ed Bonekemper completes a hat trick on Ulysses S. Grant -- first a stand-alone study, then a study of Grant and his great adversary, Robert E. Lee, and now a volume focused on the relationship between Grant and his commander in chief, Abraham Lincoln. It is surprising that there has been no book-length study of this topic, and Bonekemper's sesquicentennial volume deserves attention for the heft of its subject and as a much-needed spark to more intense focus on the Civil War frontier between politics and generalship." -- Carl R. Schenker, Jr., Esq., Civil War historian and author"Edward Bonekemper succeeds marvelously in presenting the relationship of these two Civil War icons. Lincoln and Grant outlines the divergent paths each of these two men took, until fate blended them together into a winning team for the Union. This excellent study presents a fresh and thought-provoking analysis of their lives, successes, adversities, and leadership styles. Lincoln and Grant is a must-have volume for the historian at all levels." -- Larry Clowers, Grant interpreter, historian, and book reviewer."So much has been written about Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant that there would seem to be no unplowed ground. Just in time for the Sesquicentennial, Ed Bonekemper proves this assumption wrong. In his new book the author explores in revealing detail how the Civil War careers of these two leading figures converged and evolved into a political-military collaboration that produced victory for the North." -- John Foskett, Esq., long-time Civil War buff and book reviewerA long time ago, a friend told me that the war was fought in the East but won in the West. Edward Bonekemper's excellent work on the relationship between Grant and Lincoln firmly attests to the veracity of that statement. He has concisely articulated and described their iron-clad relationship, rooted in the hard life of the antebellum West, which preserved the Union from destruction." -- John Michael Priest, author of four Civil War books and Antietam Battlefield guide"Once again, Ed Bonekemper has scoured the past and brought forth another remarkable book. This time, Bonekemper examines President Abraham Lincoln and his most aggressive and successful general-in-chief, General Ulysses S. Grant. He uncovered factors in their difficult Western frontier upbringing, their leadership styles and other aspects of their lives that created a bond of trust and mutual respect which would help them, working together, win the awful war thrust upon them both. Bonekemper identifies and examines complementary personal traits of each man that helped mold the two of them into a winning team. This is a book for those looking for more than tactics, maps and a further rehashing of skirmishes, battles, and campaigns. This is a study of the two great leaders that won the war and how their Western roots contributed to their success." -- Edwin E. Powell, retired military intelligence officer"History at its best. An overdue exposition of a neglected subject." - Captain Joe Derie, USCG (Ret.), long-time Civil War buff and book reviewer"Bonekemper sought to bring together the story of how these two remarkable men came to trust each other and work closely together. In so doing he gave us a work that sheds light on the key relationship between a commander-in-chief and his top general. Bonekemper's subject is certainly worthy of study. He has given us much to ponder and many ideas to contemplate as we compare Lincoln and Grant with, say, Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, Franklin Roosevelt and George C. Marshall, and Harry Truman and Douglas MacArthur." - Richard M. McMurry, Civil War historian, Civil War News. "It could be said that the best minds the North had in the Civil War were not even Yankees, but instead Midwesterners. Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War looks into the pre-war experiences of the President and the General, and how their upbringing in Illinois and Ohio respectively gave them the skills and vision needed to do their part reuniting the Union. An interesting perspective on the bigger picture of war and the impact of the hometown, Lincoln and Grant is a fine addition to any American Civil War study collection." - Helen Dumont, The Midwest Book Review

Brown, Jr. As a long-time student of military history, particularly that of our Civil War, I have been a fan of Mr. Bonekemper since well before his welcomed entry into the world of eBooks. Lincoln/Grant more than justifies my prior impression that we have here a national treasure in the way of a historian whose rapid development we are privileged to follow first-hand, in our own time. His books continue getting better and better, and there is no reason to suspect that this will not remain true.I continue being impressed with the author's ability to look at the same people and the same events from differing viewpoints, never becoming boring. He has an almost unique talent at mixing historical statistics, interpreting them, adding human interest, leaving the reader with a new impression of what he thought he knew well, and then closing with a perhaps subtly unstated conclusion about the relevance of all of this to not only our world, but also to generations to come. He demonstrates again and again that history is so much more than a bare recital of ancient occurrences. In this, his latest work, Mr. Bonekemper leaves me thinking about the personal, political and bureaucratic relationships between our nation's civilian and military leaders since World War II -- thinking that there has got to be a better way.Bonekemper does not preach to me, but his description and analysis of the way the relatonship between Lincoln and Grant developed, and its ultimate effectiveness, has sharpened my preexisting uneasiness with current affairs."Lincoln and Grant" deserves a high place on your "to be read list."

Zindle Having discovered the latest book, 'Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War', I decided to get the kindle version, since book version was not yet available. This is the type of book that I prefer to have for my personal library. Once again, as with his previous excellent efforts, Mr Bonekemper has gathered material and looked at it in a new and rewarding fashion. In a clear and very readable way, he introduces his concept of the relationship between President Lincoln and General Grant and proceeds to build a case for the kind of cooperation that he is highlighting as one of the main factors in the winning of the Civil War. The book was both insightful and a treat to read. Mr. Bonekemper writes very clearly and well. Each of his books have, in this reviewer's estimation, increased the respect that is his due as a commentator on Civil War personalities and events. I have no problem recommending this book, which has been my Christmas gift, an early one, to me! I have enjoyed everyone of Mr Bonekemper's books and this one has not failed to produce the same result. I'm pleased to highly recommend it.Ken ZindleMember Mid Missouri Civil War Roundtable

Edward Bonekemper III shows that President Lincoln and General Grant worked well together and did all they could to accommodate each other. Grant, however, took his lead on all issues from the President, followed his guidance, and never made excuses. Some of the most interesting material deals with Robert E. Lee as a military leader. Lee deprived Confederate forces of reinforcements at Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and elsewhere in order to keep them closer to him in Virginia. In the end, he proved himself to be more of a Virginian than a Confederate, contributing, by his negligence, to their defeat . In the last campaign of the war as many as 10,000 to 20,000 Confederate soldiers had deserted. These men would have given Lee some 60,000 to 70,000 men to resist Grant's 80,000 and could have made a pivotal difference. Unlike Lee, however, they recognized that the was was lost. This is a very good read indeed!

By Amazon Customer I bought this set after getting in love with the first book, so, here is a small review of the first three books:Insanity tells the story of Alice Wonder who has been in an Asylum for supposedly killing all her classmates, she was also thrown into the Asylum for being mad but she doesn't remember anything from her past, in the Asylum she meets the Pillar who helps her during the books to catch some Wonderland Monsters who are putting London upside down.Through the books Alice starts to discover the truths about her past and finds out what happened, or at least, a part of it.The books are full of interesting facts about the original story, it has many twists, the story is well written, the characters are complex and very fleshed out. This series made me actually rethink what being sane means. After reading the first three i can tell you this:Do you like complex stories? By Hal 'Chisaiyama' Shaver In picking out hte keywords which describe this series I had a very difficult time describing the mood of the books. In fact they cannot b described by a single word but I finally settled on SUSPENSEFUL as an overall depiction. The truth is that quite literally (no pun intended) all of the words given (Hopeful, Dark, Nostalgic, Light-hearted, Suspenseful, thoughtful) are present in abundance but the books are probably best described by suspenseful as they are an ongoing story about the impending war between our own mad society (and who can doubt that description) and the Wonderlanders that were imprisoned by Lewiss Caroll in their own dimension back in Victorian times. Many of the less dangerous Wonderlanders were left on our side of the boundary though some of the worse managed to evade Carroll's trap and now one of those has found a way of releasing some of the others albeit one at a time and they are wreaking havoc on the world. Alice Pleasant Wonder is a 19 year old girl in the Radcliffe Asylum in Oxford, England, put there for grabbing control of a busload of her classmates and crashing it killing them all except herself. Trouble is she doesn't know why as she cannot remember any of it except in snatches and grabs of wild memories. Also incarcerated there is one Professor Carter Pillar, a notorious serial killer who occupies the VIP cell on the top floor and has a curious amount of influence over the asylums director, Dr. Tom Truckle. Prof. Pillar believes that Alice is THE Alice from Carroll's books and that only she can save the world from the Wonderland Monsters wreaking havoc and that mayber, just maybe she can prevent or at least stop the impending Wonderland War. There are many, many incredible characters in this amazing and addictive series which is not at five volumes with a 6th due out shortly. This omnibus edition of the first three books is a great way to get completely hookahd on it for a great price.

Adventures Await When You Overcome FearThis is the story of a normal family of five living a very unusual life. The Medearis family has faced Middle Eastern prisons, death threats, being kicked out of a country two times, and war. It hasn't always been easy, but in the midst of it all, the invitation of Jesus to follow and not be afraid has won the day.But this is more than just their story. It's also a guide to help you step out in bold faith. Whether the call of Jesus for you means international intrigue, giving up all you have for the poor, or simply being the suburban neighbor you were always meant to be, it's time to begin your own adventure! To live a life where fear takes a backseat and God takes the wheel. In the end, of course, there are no promises of an easy life or a path free of troubles. But enormous blessings await those who walk in faith. It's time to go where Jesus is calling and do what God is doing. Don't put off the adventure he's been saving just for you."Reading Adventures in Saying Yes is so much fun you don't realize at first how profound it is. . . . In an era when people, races, religions, and countries are being torn apart by fear, this call to move past fear and follow Jesus into caring connections is essential reading."--Lynne Hybels, Advocate for Global Engagement, Willow Creek Community Church"You'll cry. You'll laugh. You'll shake your head in disbelief. But most of all, you'll never be the same after this book. It will inspire and ignite you to go beyond planning and start saying yes to Jesus' nonstop invitations to join him in what he's already up to in the world."--Leonard Sweet, bestselling author, professor (Drew University, George Fox University, Tabor College), and chief contributor to sermons.com"We are all looking for ways to be inspired and challenged in our life with Jesus. Carl's stories don't just entertain you. They call you to live courageously in the face of your fears."--Jay Pathak, Senior Pastor, Mile High Vineyard Church, and coauthor of The Art of Neighboring"Carl Medearis gives us a rare look into the utterly vulnerable, harrowing, uplifting, and often witty adventures of one who has dared to say yes in the face of fear for the sake of the good news. What's most amazing about this book is that it all actually happened. . . . Brilliant. Simply brilliant."--Ted Dekker, New York Times bestselling author"The gospel of Jesus is not about security and segregation. . . . Adventures in Saying Yes is a compelling call to embody the risky faith and radical hospitality of Jesus!"--Brian Zahnd, Pastor of Word, Life Church (St. Joseph, MO), and author of A Farewell to Mars"This book will press you toward a closer walk, a deeper love, and an undaunted life of following Jesus. Carl disarms the reader with his warm and engaging style, yet delivers deep biblical truth about what it means to be a fearless disciple. I was deeply moved by what God will do through us when we simply say yes."--Lina AbuJamra, MD, pediatric ER doctor and author of Stripped "Even if you don't like biographical books by missionaries, you are going to love this one. Adventures in Saying Yes By Cathy B Adventures in Saying Yes by Carl Medearis is a book written on the life of the Medearis family on mission in the Middle East. He says he does not try to turn people into Christians but rather talk to them and teach them about Jesus. He says that most of Moslem faith are opposed to becoming Christian but have no opposition in fact welcome learning of Jesus and His teachings. He and his family moved to Beirut in 1992 with his 2 baby daughters and then 2 years later a son was born to their young family. They lived there during the entire growing up years of their children. Their children were steeped in Arab culture. They were there during 9-1-1. They talk of being afraid of talking to Moslems about Jesus but when they did it they found that they had nothing to fear. They loved hearing the Good News. Oh Chris the wife was not on board at first. This was one of Carl's lessons in patience--he had to wait until Chris heard the call to go to the Middle East. Once Chris heard the call the young family lost no time selling their "stuff" and making their way into this adventure of saying yes to God. This family now has 30 years of experience. They now know the language and the Arab culture. They are back living in Colorado still saying yes and teaching about Jesus.I didn't know what to think about this book before I read it. I had many of the preconceived notions about Arabs that many Americans do. This book opened my eyes to many things, but most of all to saying yes to God and no to fear. I was hoping that it would tell me more on how to know what is God's call and what is what I want or wish. That one is still much up in the air. I would advise this as good reading material for any who wish to know more about what going into any mission field is like as well as finding out how to say no to fear of rejection or failure.I received this book from Bethany House for this review.
