Alex’s Wake is a tale of two parallel journeys undertaken seven decades apart. In the spring of 1939, Alex and Helmut Goldschmidt were two of more than 900 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany aboard the St. Louis, “the saddest ship afloat” (New York Times). Turned away from Cuba, the United States, and Canada, the St. Louis returned to Europe, a stark symbol of the world’s indifference to the gathering Holocaust. The Goldschmidts disembarked in France, where they spent the next three years in six different camps before being shipped to their deaths in Auschwitz. In the spring of 2011, Alex’s grandson, Martin Goldsmith, followed in his relatives’ footsteps on a six-week journey of remembrance and hope, an irrational quest to reverse their fate and bring himself peace. Alex’s Wake movingly recounts the detailed histories of the two journeys, the witnesses Martin encounters for whom the events of the past are a vivid part of a living present, and an intimate, honest attempt to overcome a tormented family legacy.

Review “Beautiful and brave…a chilling yet affirming account of human loss and recovery.”—David Maraniss, author of They Marched into Sunlight“The opposite of love, Elie Wiesel has observed, is not hate but indifference. With Alex’s Wake, the author proves himself the least indifferent and, because of that, the most loving of men.”—Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Hardball"There are six million Holocaust stories. All of them are the same in sadness and devastation. Each is different in circumstance and fear. Martin Goldsmith eloquently tells the story of his search for family in the rubble of memory and distance. It's a moving journey of finding the past and his own determined and compassionate present."—Susan Stamberg, NPR"A new perspective on the Holocaust...powerful and evocative"—New York Journal of Books“Underscores the immense moral challenges and failings of a nation that believes itself the leader of the free world…. A heartbreaking story of fear, frustration, anti-Semitism, and betrayal.”—Baltimore Sun“A child of persecuted German Jews remembers his tormented, perished forebears—and makes peace with the country that hounded them to death…A well-researched, thorough reckoning of this shameful past.”—Kirkus Reviews“Goldsmith ably personalizes the Holocaust, traveling the Auschwitz-bound arc of his grandfather and uncle, chillingly vivifying the collective camps’ otherwise monolithic millions.”—Providence Journal"Profoundly moving"—Johns Hopkins MagazineBlogcritics.org, 4/26/15“[A] heartbreaking account…A harrowing tale…A book with a lesson for today.”New York Daily News, 4/15/15“With painstaking detail and a historical biography, Goldsmith digs deep into his own history and the psyche of Eastern European Jewry.”BookTrib.com, 4/15/15“[An] intensely personal story.”Association of Jewish Libraries Reviews, February/March 2016“Goldsmith’s well-written and well-researched account is personal and poignant.”

Powerful and Evocative Holocaust Memoir By SeattleBookMama Holocaust memoirs take on added urgency right now, between the revisionists who want to rewrite history and claim that the entire thing was either a hoax or dreadful exaggeration, and the fact that the eye witnesses and survivors are nearly all dead now. Martin Goldsmith retraces the journey, both academically and where possible, literally, to the places his Uncle Helmut and grandfather Alex were taken. It's quite a story, and would be a fun read if it were not so horribly, terribly true. As it stands, Goldsmith's narrative pulls his readers in one slim finger at a time, until we are held firmly to the text and must remain until it's done. The narrative starts out introspective and almost dreamlike. I nearly set it aside about twenty percent of the way in and not returned, thinking to myself that of course, I know the Holocaust was real, but do I want to read about it again? It's not an enjoyable topic, and what good can it do to revisit it? Furthermore, I started to believe that this particular narrative was not so different from other heartbreaking stories, and might be more of interest to the writer and his surviving kin than to strangers like me.I am glad I kept reading, because just past this point is where we quit the runway and the story takes wing. The writer starts with the visits, first to the Holocaust museum, and then to Europe. He is greeted warmly in his family's former homeland, and he makes speeches and accepts certificates and expresses appreciation to the family who now occupies what was once the family manse for their clumsy token gesture. The current owners clearly understand that circumstances have skewed things badly, and they want to make it up in some impossible way. They were wondering what he would think of a nice plaque on the building's exterior noting its place in history and recognizing his family. He understands these folks aren't the ones who stole from him. He says and does the right things, but the edge is unmistakably there, as part of him longs to say that if they really want to make things right, to give him back his family's home. Like many who lost wealth and/or family in the Holocaust, he waxes nostalgic, looking with poignancy at the beautiful place that should rightfully be his. Here I squirm a bit. I don't read rich people's stories for a reason. I don't believe anybody is entitled to vast wealth. It's why the only memoirs I avoid are those of the ruling rich. But another more important principle trumps my usual one: nobody, nobody, nobody should be disenfranchised of even a penny on account of their ethnicity or race. If anyone at all in Germany gets to have a big fancy house, then Goldsmith's family should. His resentment is righteous; he has the moral high ground here. I think back to an old bumper sticker I once saw, courtesy of the American Indian Movement during the 1960's that read, "AMERICA: love it or give it back." And thus is the untenable yet irreparable theft of the Holocaust's descendents. We can't fix it, so here's your framed letter, your trophy, your plaque, your award. His ambivalence runs deep and is clear and harsh. It should be.From there, Goldsmith's family saga telescopes out in a way that is so deft, I don't even catch the transitions. This is rare. I spent years of my life teaching teenagers how to make transitions in their writing, and usually when it is well done in professional writing, I sit back and admire it, like the French paintings he describes. I love to watch good transitions happen, but the very best are noteworthy in that I am so deeply into the text that they float by unseen. It's almost magical. And so, as the family's tale is told, we see the larger picture of France and French fascism. Many of us today want to believe that all of France and much of Germany was simply too afraid of the fascists to resist, but Goldsmith unflinchingly grabs us by the hair, makes us look. There are cheering throngs that are thrilled when the fascists take power. They aren't trembling; they are overjoyed. This is how fascism works, in demonizing a sector of the population, others believe themselves lifted up.In the end, I was glad to have joined Goldsmith on his journey. For anyone with a serious interest in World War II; the Holocaust; the face and effect of fascism; or contemporary European history, this gem is not to be missed.

Howard Shortly after publication of his first book, The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany Martin Goldsmith received a telephone call from Nobel laureate, author, and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. Offering high praise for the book, Wiesel urged Goldsmith to continue to share his talents and begin soon to write his next book. As a reader, I'm grateful that he took that advice. In "The Inextinguishable Symphony," Goldsmith told his parents' "story of music and love" as musicians in Nazi Germany. That story had a happy "ending," beginning with Günther and Rosemary Goldsmith's emigration to the United States in 1941. In contrast, "Alex's Wake" - the wartime saga of Günther's own father (Alex) and brother (Klaus Helmut) - ends tragically. It is no spoiler to reveal (as the book jacket does) that Alex and Helmut's awful two-year journey ended in Auschwitz in August 1942.Martin Goldsmith is a gifted storyteller with a talent for beautiful, evocative language. If you're familiar with his warm, resonant voice when hosting classical music programs on NPR or Sirius XM, it's easy to hear that voice while reading his story. (Of course, you don't have to just imagine it if you buy the CD or audiobook, which he narrates, rather than the book itself.) In "Alex's Wake," Goldsmith retraces his grandfather's and uncle's steps and tells their horrific story. He does so not only to share the lessons of a shameful history (in which both France and the U.S. were complicit) but also, more personally, to try to deal in some way with the revelation that his own father failed to do all he could to rescue Alex and Helmut from their fate. Although recognizing the irrationality of carrying such "inherited guilt" - after all, Goldsmith was born 10 years after his grandfather and uncle were murdered - he nonetheless felt compelled to try "to save them." And, he says, "If I couldn't save them, the least I could do was to place flowers on their graves, to tell the world their story, and to bear witness."In "Alex's Wake," Goldsmith does bear witness - powerfully, movingly, and with unflinching honesty. The book first introduces us to Alex and Helmut, two solid German citizens. Indeed, Alex had fought in the trenches of World War I on behalf of the Reich and received the Iron Cross; and he later owned a successful and popular clothing store in Oldenburg. But then came the rise of National Socialism, Kristallnacht (during which Alex was arrested and then imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp), and the beginning of Jews' "scramble to flee" Germany. Based on painstaking research, including in German and French archives, the book follows Alex's and Helmut's journey first aboard the ill-fated SS St. Louis from Hamburg, Germany to Havana, Cuba, where they expected to start new lives, grateful for having escaped the Nazis. But, with remarkable indifference, Cuba, the U.S., and Canada all turned the refugees away and forced the St. Louis to return to Europe. Alex and Helmut could have chosen to disembark in England but they decided instead on France. Had they only known that France would soon become "Vichy France," with its own network of thousands of camps for Jews and other "undesirables," they would no doubt have opted for England. They were initially welcomed in France with open arms, but in a very short time, Alex and Helmut "metamorphosed ... from displaced persons ... to enemy aliens."Interspersing his relatives' 1939-41 "voyage of betrayal" with his (and his wife, Amy's) own 2011 "journey of remembrance" across Europe, Goldsmith tells of Alex and Helmut's increasingly harsh experiences in one French concentration camp after another. He quotes at length from their remarkable letters, including their increasingly desperate pleas to Günther to help save their lives. And even though the reader, like Goldsmith himself, fully understands that that isn't going to happen, his powerful narrative compels us to share his irrational hope that the story might somehow have a different ending. The exceptionally moving coda of "Alex's Wake" retells Goldsmith's return, in September 2012, to his grandfather's beautiful home in Oldenburg, Germany. Confiscated by the Nazis, the home is now owned by a couple who were unaware of its shameful history but who now offer a gesture of remembrance and reconciliation. Although initially ambivalent about their offer, Goldsmith comes to terms both with it and, more importantly, with his own "inherited guilt and shame."As I read the final pages of this book, I found myself, oddly, both smiling and crying. "Alex's Wake" is both intelligent and emotional, both broadly historical and intensely personal, both horrific and life-affirming, both educational and enormously satisfying. It deserves a broad audience.

While Nazi atrocities are well documented and never fail to produce horror when discussed, personal familial stories are not well documented. Martin Goldsmith draws you into this book immediately, and it's impossible to put it down until the book is finished. You get to know his family and live this with them. Rather than have me describe Mr. Goldsmith's style, I suggest you click on both Inextinguishable Symphony and Alex's Wake on Amazon and read his prefaces. You will know what I mean; you'll be captivated and want to buy the book. While you're at it, buy both books. You won't be sorry. The important aspect of this book is the well-researched and well-documented presentation of the effects of the Holocaust on Mr. Goldsmith's family and particularly on him. This is one story out of millions of untold stories. The seeming "ordinariness" of the cited familial atrocities to millions of people, particularly the Jews, is what makes this book both compelling reading and horrifying at the same time. I read it in two days, not being able to leave it alone, and yet dreading what I knew was the inevitable outcome of his journey. He shares it most personally, and that is what makes it so compelling and yet painful. After such a journey for Mr. Goldsmith, he also shares his liberation from the guilt of having done nothing where he could have done nothing, while questioning his father's inactivity, where he could possibly have done something. While the final chapter does not make the horror go away--you will think of this book for days and days after--it is cathartic in that Mr. Goldsmith finds peace.

Spoiler Alert-“The Palest Ink” is not just for women.“The Palest Ink” describes how two boys become men while in the midst of China’s Cultural Revolution. Hard decisions had to be made during these tumultuous times. Do they follow their consciences and values while China is evolving right before their eyes? What are the consequences of following the masses? Would they change their sense of right and wrong while those around them struggled to come up with their own answers? Kay Bratt supplies the answers and more! The Palest Ink is a Man’s Book. Benfu and Pony Boy are challenged to become men while still in their teens. It portrays chivalry, responsibility, friendship, and love. Man topics if I say so myself. “The Palest Ink” is a book I just couldn’t put down. The story was riveting and consuming. The characters came to life in such a way that I vicariously lived their lives with them.Kay Bratt writes like she knows China and she does know China. I’ve read 10 of her books and I’ve loved them all. I’ve enjoyed her writings like I’ve enjoyed the writings of Ji-li Jiang (The Red Scarf Girl) and Xinran (The Good Women of China). She shares their passion for China and it’s displayed in her stories.“The Palest Ink” is a book that’s categorized Women’s Fiction, but it should be Men’s Fiction also. It’s a fabulous book and lays a firm foundation for Kay Bratt’s Scavenger’s Daughters series.I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

By TicToc Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: 'The Palest Ink,' A Historical Fiction by Kay Bratt.Times of turmoil often breed courage and valor. In The Palest Ink by Kay Bratt, we are trust into a story of a Cultural Revolution supported by Chairman Mao. As his Red Guard begins a deadly assault on their people leaving many innocent victims in their wake, there are those who believe they can create their own mark on history through the opportunity of rebellion. Benfu is a young man, worried more about his career as a violinist and an arranged marriage that he wants no part of, then the possibility of revolution. His family are intellectuals and teach in Shanghai. They know of the histories and the possibilities of the coming surge and how they must now begin to hide valuables and change in order to stay under the radar of those hunting for possible rebellion. They also understand how often the innocent can be targeted, and history supports the dangers inherent in the coming wave of assault. Pony Boy, a member of the lower class, is Benfu’s best friend. Their futures are very different and they look at life in different ways. Together in the struggle of Political turmoil, they must both make decisions that can affect both themselves and their family. Thrown together in the chaos of revolution, they begin their own mission and rebellion against the red tide of Mao’s Red Guard. Can they find a way to make their mark on history? Life moves quickly for both, and the tide turns ever sharply for their own families. Will they continue on their quest, or is all lost for themselves and their families. Bratt has given us characters that begin in loving homes, Benfu, ready for university, and in the tradition of the country soon to be affianced. His best friend has a harder life and yet in both cases their innocence shines through. As the darkening of revolution begins it changes them and they both have to find a way to grow and live in the chaos created in the wave of danger and deaths. Bratt has given us a time of turmoil and has allowed us to watch the growth of these two youths into entirely different people then where they started. The Revolution itself is well documented and the historical significance of Chairman Mao’s Red Guard leave fear in its wake. The danger and fear that come through the writing create discomfort and unrest, much as it must have been during the times. The addition of the danger is palpable, and adds to the chaotic feelings left after the reading of this work. If you enjoy history, revolution, courage, romance and family, then this will make a great work for your library. Kay Bratt has given us a work of intensity. This would be a great work for a reading group with an amazing array of information for discussion.

I didn't know Benfu.I got to meet him in The Palest Ink, penned by Kay Bratt.Am I glad I did.I've never been to China. Kay's words transported me there. Benfu and Pony Boy weren't just people, they became friends, ones that I'll think and care about and remember for a long time. I lived the book. I was there: watching them growing up in a tumultuous time in China's history. I agonized over the decisions they had to make that impacted their lives, the lives of their families, the lives of their countrymen.I love books that are unputdownable. The Palest Ink is one of them. When I find a book that lingers after reading, it's a very good day. Will be reading this again.I was given an advanced copy in exchange for a fair review.

Imperio Bactriano (Año -148 a.C.).

As much as I loved Indecent Hunger 1, I was afraid I might be disappointed in Fox's sophomore effort. But the elegant prose and thoughtful character development continues, along with some of the hottest, deliciously erotic scenes I've ever encountered. I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this series--hungrily looking forward to the next in line!

Essential By An Amazon Customer Take note all of you authors out there who want to write sexy BDSM stories, this is an absolutely essential guide to creating a realistic and captivating book. There has been an explosion of BDSM inspired stories published in recent years, unfortunately many of them are paltry due to lack of or no experience in BDSM play; the author of this how-to-guide is obviously familiar with the lifestyle and demonstrates that knowledge flawlessly. This is a well-written and enlightening guide that is definitely vital to writing a great BDSM book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sub Bill By MeBerri I have read a few Mistress Stacie books and loved them all, so I was very intrigued when I came across this book which is written by her sub Bill. I will admit that I have always been curious about what kind of person sub Bill is while I was reading the other books. It was really interesting to read a book that is actually written by a character that you have read about in other books. I will say that Sub Bill seems to be quite smart, and the information in this writing guide is solid, good advice. I liked the little peeks into his life that he gave, as well as when he was talking about his Mistress Stacie. I liked reading about his past with other doms and was surprised to learn his age. This is a great book, not just for the great writing guide, but if you are a fan of the Stacie Supple books and want to get to know the characters better. I will be keeping an eye out for more books by sub Bill!

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Necessity had taught Jemma Copeland to shut out distractions. She'd learned to ignore the things she didn't want to think about, to enable her to do what needed to be done.So for the past two hours she'd ignored the scorching heat of the Sahara. The insistent, hollow ache in her stomach. The stigma of being a Copeland, and what it meant back home in the United States. She'd blocked out heat, hunger, and shame, but she couldn't block out the tall, white-robed man standing just a foot behind the photographer, watching her through dark, unsmiling eyes while a half dozen robed men stood behind him.She knew who the man was. How could she not? He'd attended her sister's wedding five years ago in Greenwich and every woman with a pulse had noticed Sheikh Mikael Karim. He was tall, he was impossibly, darkly handsome, and he was a billionaire as well as the new king of Saidia. But Mikael Karim wasn't supposed to be on set today. He was supposed to be in Buenos Aires this week and his sudden appearance, arriving in a parade of glossy black luxury SUVs with tinted windows, had sent ripples of unease throughout the entire crew.It was obvious he wasn't happy.Jemma's gut told her something ugly could happen soon. She prayed she was wrong. She just wanted to get through the rest of the shoot and fly out tomorrow morning as planned. At least he hadn't shown up yesterday. Yesterday had been grueling, a very long day, with multiple shots in multiple locations, and the heat had been intense. But she hadn't complained. She wouldn't. She needed the job too much to be anything but grateful for the chance to still work.It still boggled her mind how much things had changed. Just a year ago she had been one of America's golden girls, envied for her beauty, her wealth, her status as an It Girl. Her family was powerful, affluent. The Copelands had homes scattered across the world, and she and her gorgeous, privileged sisters were constantly photographed and discussed. But even the powerful can fall, and the Copeland family tumbled off their pedestal with the revelation that Daniel, her father, was the number two man in the biggest Ponzi scheme in America in the past century.Overnight the Copelands became the most hated family in America. Now Jemma could barely make ends meet. The fallout from her father's arrest, and the blitz of media interest surrounding the case, had destroyed her career. The fact that she worked, and had supported herself since she was eighteen, meant nothing to the public. She was still Daniel Copeland's daughter. Hated. Loathed. Resented.Ridiculed.Today, she was lucky to get work, and her once brilliant career now barely paid the bills. When her agency came to her with this assignment, a three day shoot with two travel days, meaning she'd be paid for five work days, she'd jumped at the opportunity to come to Saidia, the independent desert kingdom tucked underneath Southern Morocco, and nestled between the Western Sahara and the Atlantic Ocean. She'd continued to fight for the opportunity even when the Saidia consulate denied her visa request. It wasn't legal, but desperate times called for desperate measures so she'd reapplied for a new visa as her sister, using Morgan's passport bearing Morgan's married name, Xanthos. This time she'd received the needed travel visa.Yes, she was taking a huge risk, coming here under a false name, but she needed money. Without this paycheck, she wouldn't be able to pay her next month's mortgage. So here she was, dressed in a long fox fur and thigh high boots, sweltering beneath the blazing sun.So what if she was naked beneath the coat? She was working. She was surviving. And one day, she'd thrive again, too.So let them look.Let them all look—the disapproving sheikh and his travel guard—because she wouldn't be crushed. She refused to be crushed. The clothes were beautiful. Life was exciting. She didn't have a care in the world.Despite her fierce resolve, perspiration beaded beneath her full breasts and slid down her bare abdomen. Not uncomfortable, she thought. Sexy. And with sexy firmly in mind, she drew a breath, jutted her hip, and struck a bold pose.Keith, the Australian photographer, let out an appreciative whistle. "That's beautiful, baby! More of that, please."She felt a rush of pleasure, which was quickly dashed by the sight of Mikael Karim moving closer to Keith. The sheikh was tall, so tall he towered over Keith, and his shoulders were broad, dwarfing the slender Australian.Jemma had forgotten just how intensely handsome Mikael Karim was. She'd modeled in other countries and had met many different sheikhs, and most had been short, heavyset men with flirty eyes and thickening jowls. But Sheikh Mikael Karim was young, and lean, and fierce. His white robes only accentuated the width of his shoulders as well as his height, and his angular jaw jutted, black eyebrows flat over those intense, dark eyes. Now Sheikh Karim looked over Keith's head, his dark gaze piercing her, holding her attention. She couldn't look away. He seemed to be telling her something, warning her of something. She went hot, then cold, shivering despite the heat. Her stomach rose, fell. An alarm sounded in her head. He was dangerous. She tugged on the edges of the coat, pulling it closer to her body, suddenly very conscious of the fact that she was naked beneath.Sighing with frustration, Keith lowered his camera a fraction. "You just lost all your energy. Give me sexy, baby."Jemma glanced at the sheikh from beneath her lashes. The man oozed tension, a lethal tension that made her legs turn to jelly and the hair prickle on the back of her neck. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. But Keith couldn't read Sheikh Karim's expression and his irritation grew. "Come on, focus. We need to wrap this up, baby."Keith was right. They did need to wrap this shot. And she was here to do a job. She had to deliver, or she'd never work again.Jemma gulped a breath, squared her shoulders, and lifted her chin to the sun, feeling her long hair spill down her back as she let the heavy fur drop off her shoulder, exposing more skin."Nice." Keith lifted his camera, motioned for his assistant to step closer with the white reflective screen, and began snapping away. "I like that. More of that."Jemma shook her head, letting her thick hair tease the small of her spine even as the fur fell lower on her breasts."Perfect," Keith crooned. "That's hot. Love it. Don't stop. You're on fire now."Yes, she was, she thought, arching her shoulders back, breasts thrust high, the nipples now just exposed to the kiss of the sun. In Sheikh Karim's world she was probably going to burn in the flames of hell, but there was nothing she could do about it. This was her job. She had to deliver. And so she pushed all other thoughts from mind, except for giving the image they wanted. Her shoulders twisted and the coat slid lower on her arm, the fur tickling the back of her bare thighs."Lovely, baby." Keith was snapping away. "So beautiful. Keep doing what you're doing. You're a goddess. Every man's dream."She wasn't a goddess, or a dream, but she could pretend to be. She could pretend anything for a short period of time. Pretending gave her distance, allowing her to breathe, escape, escaping the reality of what was happening at home. Home. A sinking sensation filled her. What a nightmare.Battling back the sadness, Jemma shifted, lifting her chin, thrusting her hip out, dropping the coat altogether, exposing her breasts, nipples jutting proudly.Keith whistled softly. "Give me more.""No," Sheikh Mikael Karim ground out. It was just one word, but it echoed like a crack of thunder, immediately silencing the murmur of stylists, make-up artist, and lighting assistants. All heads turned toward the sheikh.Jemma stared at him, her stomach churning all over again. The sheikh's expression was beyond fierce. His lips curled, his dark eyes burned as he pushed the camera in Keith's hands down. "That's enough," he gritted. "I've had enough, from all of you." His narrowed gaze swept the tents and crew. "You are done here."And then his head turned again and he stared straight at Jemma. "And you, Miss Copeland. Cover yourself, and then go inside the tent. I will be in to deal with you shortly."She covered herself, but didn't move. The sheikh had called her Miss Copeland, not Mrs. Xan-this, the name she'd used on the visa, but Copeland.Panic flooded her veins. Her heart surged. Sheikh Karim knew who she was. He'd recognized her after all these years. The realization shocked her. He, who knew so many, remembered her.Hands shaking, she tugged the coat closer to her body, suddenly icy cold despite the dazzling heat. "What's happening?" she whispered, even though in a dim part of her brain, she knew. She'd been found out. Her true identity had been discovered. How, she didn't know, but she was in trouble. Grave trouble. She could feel the severity of the situation all the way down to her toes."I think you know," Sheikh Karim said flatly. "Now go inside the tent and wait."Her knees knocked. She wasn't sure her legs could support her. "For what?""To be informed of the charges being brought against you.""I've done nothing wrong."His dark eyes narrowed. His jaw hardened as his gaze swept over her, from the top of her head to the boots on her feet. "You've done everything wrong, Miss Copeland. You're in serious trouble. So go to the tent, now, and if you have half a brain, you'll obey."Jemma had more than half a brain. She actually had a very good brain. And a very good imagination, which made the walk to the tent excruciating. What was going to happen to her? What were the official charges? And what would the punishment be?She tried to calm herself. She focused on her breathing, and clamped down on her wild thoughts. It wouldn't help her to panic. She knew she'd entered the country illegally. She'd willingly agreed to work on a shoot that hadn't been condoned by the government. And she'd shown her breasts in public, which was also against Saidia's law.And she'd done it all because she hadn't taken money from her family since she was eighteen and she wasn't about to start now.She was an adult. A successful, capable woman. And she'd been determined to make it without going to her family begging for a handout. In hindsight, perhaps begging for a handout would have been wiser. In the wardrobe tent, Jemma shrugged off the heavy fur coat, and slipped a light pink cotton kimono over her shoulders, tying the sash at her waist. As she sat down at the stool before the make-up mirror, she could hear the sheikh's voice echo in her head. You've done everything wrong…Everything wrong…He was right. She had done everything wrong. She prayed he'd accept her apology, allow her to make amends. She hadn't meant to insult him, or disrespect his country or his culture in any way.Jemma straightened, hearing voices outside her tent. The voices were pitched low, speaking quickly, urgently. Male voices. A single female voice. Jemma recognized the woman as Mary Leed, Catwalk's editorial director. Mary was usually unflappable but she sounded absolutely panicked now.Jemma's heart fell all over again. Bad. This was bad.She swallowed hard, her stomach churning, nerves threatening to get the better of her.She shouldn't have come. She shouldn't have taken such risks. But what was she to do otherwise? Crumble? Shatter? End up on the streets, destitute, homeless, helpless? No.She wouldn't be helpless, and she wouldn't be pitied, or mocked, either. She'd suffered enough at the hands of her father. He'd betrayed them all; his clients, his business partners, his friends, even his family. He might be selfish and ruthless and destructive, but the rest of the Copelands weren't. Copelands were good people.Good people, she silently insisted, stretching out one leg to unzip the thigh-high boot. Her hand was trembling so badly that it made it difficult to get the zipper down. The boots were outrageous to start with. They were the stuff of fantasy, a very high heel projecting a kinky twist, just like the fashion layout itself. They would have been smarter doing this feature in Palm Springs instead of Saidia with Saidia's strict laws of moral conduct. Saidia might be stable and tolerant, but it wasn't a democracy, nor did it cater to the wealthy Westerners like some other nations. It remained conservative and up until two generations ago, marriages weren't just arranged, they were forced. The tribal leaders kidnapped their brides from neighboring tribes.Unthinkable to the modern Western mind, but acceptable here.Jemma was tugging the zipper down on the second boot when the tent flap parted and Mary entered with Sheikh Karim. Two members of the sheikh's guard stood at the entrance.Jemma slowly sat up, and looked from Mary to the sheikh and back.Mary's face was pale, her lips pressed thin. "We've a problem," she said.Silence followed. Jemma curled her fingers into her lap.Mary wouldn't meet Jemma's gaze, looking past her shoulder instead. "We're wrapping up the shoot and returning to the capitol immediately. We are facing some legal charges and fines, which we are hoping to take care of quickly so the crew and company can return to England tomorrow, or the next day." She hesitated for a long moment, before adding even more quietly, "At least most of us should be able to return to England tomorrow or the next day. Jemma, I'm afraid you won't be going with us."Jemma started to rise, but remembered her boot and sat back down. "Why not?""The charges against you are different," Mary said, still avoiding Jemma's gaze. "We are in trouble for using you, but you, you're in trouble for…" Her voice faded away. She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't have to.Jemma knew why she was in trouble. What she didn't know was what she'd be charged with. "I'm sorry." She drew a quick, shallow breath and looked from Mary to Sheikh Karim. "I am sorry. Truly—""Not interested," he said curtly.Jemma's stomach flipped. "I made a mistake—""A mistake is pairing a black shoe and a blue shoe. A mistake is forgetting to charge one's phone. A mistake is not entering the country illegally, under false pretenses, with a false identity. You had no work permit. No visa. Nothing." Sheikh Karim's voice crackled with contempt and fury. "What you did was deliberate, and a felony, Miss Copeland."Jemma put a hand to her belly, praying she wouldn't throw up here, now. She hadn't eaten much today. She never did on days she worked, knowing she photographed better with a very flat stomach. "What can I do to make this right?"Mary shot Sheikh Karim a stricken glance. He shook his head, once. "There is nothing. The magazine staff must appear in court, and pay their fines. You will face a different judge, and be sentenced accordingly."Jemma sat very still. "So I'm to be separated from everyone?""Yes." The sheikh gestured to Mary. "You and the rest of the crew, are to leave immediately. My men will accompany you to ensure your safety." He glanced at Jemma. "And you will come with me."

Jemma Copeland has lost her great modelling job, her apartment and boyfriend because of her Bernie Madoff type swindler father. As a last ditch effort to get some money, she has taken a modelling job in the Middle Eastern country of Saida. The photo shoot is interrupted by the country's leader, Sheik Mikael who promptly shuts down the shoot & packs up Jemma to face a multitude of charges for violating the laws of his country. Unknown to Jemma, the Sheik has his own reasons for hating Jemma & her father. This is a better book than the first one in the series.A must read for Jane Porter fans.

It flows of the pages and I loved the characters. It had a little different start than many other romance stories but after that I totally fell in love with the story. I loved all the well described scenes in the dessert and I was not disappointed. If you like reading Harlequins you'll like this one.

Aimed at helping the physics student to develop a solid grasp of basic graduate-level material, this book presents worked solutions to a wide range of informative problems. These problems have been culled from the preliminary and general examinations created by the physics department at Princeton University for its graduate program. The authors, all students who have successfully completed the examinations, selected these problems on the basis of usefulness, interest, and originality, and have provided highly detailed solutions to each one. Their book will be a valuable resource not only to other students but to college physics teachers as well. The first four chapters pose problems in the areas of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, thereby serving as a review of material typically covered in undergraduate courses. Later chapters deal with material new to most first-year graduate students, challenging them on such topics as condensed matter, relativity and astrophysics, nuclear physics, elementary particles, and atomic and general physics.

The advanced graduate students traditionally pass this book down to the incoming graduate students. Nice challenging probelms with clear solutions. Good luck studying for the exams!

The problems in this book may be very challenging, but they include fully worked solutions. The topics cover a very broad range of physics, though the emphasis is on selection of interesting questions rather than comprehensive coverage.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Okay By R. Call This book was helpful as a general guide for the kinds of problems to expect on this kind of test but the solutions weren't great.

Little does he know, his good buddy Evan has plans for him that have nothing to do with books and everything to do with how well they can fit together in the library. My only complaint is the stories are so short, I could read so much more about these guys. Although short the stories are very well written.

"Every man has two countries," Henri de Bornier once said, "his own and France." Indeed, France has captivated us for centuries. Here, in this compelling history from acclaimed historian Marshall B. Davison, is its story: from prehistory to its conquest by Julius Caesar; from its invasion by the Franks, who gave us the name we use today, to the reign of Charlemagne; from the rule of the Bourbon monarchs, who reached their apex under the Sun King, Louis XIV, to the bloody days of the French Revolution; from the ruthless rise and reign of Napoleon Bonaparte to the brutal Nazi occupation during World War II. This book is a must-read for any Francophile.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good introduction By Corina Pelser A good overview and a quick read. Not much depth, but considering the scope of the author's topic - from ancient civilization to the present time - it would be impossible to evaluate, review and discuss all of the significant moments in French history or the people who shaped it. A good introduction or to brush up on your basic French history.

Just Another Story, by Nicholas Cooper

About the Author I’m from a small town in Illinois called Rock City where I am currently located and I’ve been writing ever since I was a kid. Everything from children’s stories about a rat, poetry of all sorts including love, horror, humor, and more. I’ve written short stories and now this novel that I started as just a side project my sophomore year of high school. I’ve always had such a vivid imagination and everything I have ever thought of that was either out of the ordinary or just sounded interesting I’ve always written down. I enjoy writing, cosplaying, having a good time, spending time with friends and family, and just being myself. I’ve had multiple careers at such a young age. Farmer, retail salesman, and now serving but, I hope to one day work hard enough to pursue my passions. My passion of writing, filming, and cosplaying. This story was inspired through a period in time that I have loved ever since I saw the 1972 hit movie “The Godfather” From then on I studied up on my history and wanted to write another story about overcoming the odds. I didn’t want this to be just another underdog story because that’s been done multiple times regardless of how good the stories are. This story’s main purpose isn’t even about the history, or the mafia, that was basically all entertainment. This story’s main purpose is to show that there are numerous stories of triumph. Soldiers risking their lives in war, children fighting to survive illness, even someone scratching and clawing to achieve their goals and dreams. Some way, somehow, someone hears these stories whether it be through social media, the news, magazines, you name it. They never go untold and some people read or watch these amazing stories and learn something from it, others just comment on it and it becomes the talk of the town for a week or so, then there are the people who actually use it to motivate them with their dreams because, in this world, anything is possible. It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to have my work published and now it has been. It doesn’t matter how, what matters is the fact that I took the time to get this done. Nothing is impossible. I want to thank everyone for all of your support and making this possible.

I really like first-person stories to begin with, which is something authors are seeming to shy away from lately. This book takes many turns and the characters, especially Marco, develop very nicely throughout. She was a free spirit, brilliant business woman, and beauty who never found reciprocated love. Madsen, with authority, delves into this fashion doyenne’s business and private lives to reveal one woman’s extraordinary progress: from orphan to millinery shopkeeper, from lodestar of feminine style to a very rich woman with a closet full of dark secrets.

Chanel: A Woman of Her Own, by Axel Madsen

From Publishers Weekly When it was suggested to the elderly Gabrielle Chanel (1883-1971) that she see a psychiatrist, she replied, "I, who never told the truth to my priest?" In this full-length, very readable biography of Coco, as the legendary French designer was called, Madsen does a commendable job of ferreting out the seeming truth of a woman apparently as deft at fabricating her life as she was with a needle and thread. The biographer of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir is at his best here when synthesizing his subject from known facts and suppositions, beginning with Chanel's penniless start as an orphan to her death at age 88 in a hotel room, alone--except for a maid--a millionaire designer of inventive clothing for women, from the famed "little black dress" to sportswear. With great stamina, Madsen chronicles Chanel's meteoric rise and the succession of celebrated friends and lovers she met along the way: Winston Churchill and Igor Stravinsky, to name two, fell under her spell. And if the designer's life was extravagant, the genius of her style lay, as Madsen tells it, in simplicity and a regard for function. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Madsen takes the reader on a fantastic journey through the incredible and bittersweet life of Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel, the woman who forever changed the world of modern fashion with the creation of the simple, elegant black dress, costume jewelry, and her own special perfume. Intertwining Chanel's business ventures, wealth, glamour, and influences, the biography is filled with fascinating and emotional stories of personal triumph, success and tragedy, social intrigue, and sexual escapades with nobility, artists, and politicians. The text, broken down into four parts, focuses on her life from her birth and childhood years to her early business success, her decline following the demoralizing events of World War II, and her amazing comeback at the age of 70 to the haute couture world she helped create. 101 of 104 people found the following review helpful. Chanel Bio is everything it should be. By Regis Fox I found it strange that some readers gave negative or highly critical reviews of this biography. Someone even commented on the difficulty in reading the French names! It's a little late to change Chanel's nationality and thank God! This biography is successful on a number of levels but primarily two: it recounts the fascinating life, in great detail, of the late Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and it puts her professional contribution to the world in context. On a personal level, her life-story reads as a Dickens novel. Her's is a truly "rags-to-riches" story. Chanel was a woman who created a life and a legend against the odds. She was one of those rare and stunning creatures rising from practically nothing to become a household name. Her family was destitute. Her father abandoned her at an orphanage. Her attempts in music and theatre came to nothing. Her sewing skills were atrocious! Only after a young gentleman named Balsan recognized her talent through her unconventional beauty did her true potential begin to emerge. Chanel knew all of the greatest people of her age: Stravinsky, Cocteau, Dali, Misia Sert, and the Duke of Westminster, among others. Many of these people she knew intimately. How tragic that even after these acquaintances and global successes as a designer, Chanel never really found success in love. Professionally, the impact of her designs are still with us today and influencing generations of new designers and artists. From a perspective of fashion, Chanel almost single-handedly pulled the 19th century world into the modern age by pulling women out of corsets and sliding them into pants. The "little black dress" and classic Chanel suit are not only articles of clothing, they are timeless works of art. Madsen has succeeded in writing a biography that does not fall short as other books on Chanel have in the past. His biography begins BEFORE her birth and continues on AFTER her death. He explores her roots and discusses the ongoing impact of her life, while filling in all the opulent details in between. If you want to know who Chanel was and why she is still so important today, pick up this book. Now if they would only do a feature film treatment!

50 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating book, full of details and historically correct. By tsetsitasheva@yahoo.com This book was extremely interesting to read. Considering Chanel's habbit of often lying about her past, many biographers had given up on trying to tell her story. That's probably why the book lacks reasoning behind certain facts of her life, although the author did the best he could to provide his own viewpoint about some of the unenswered questions. The book is wonderful and it leaves the reader with plenty of room to use his/her own imagination to reveal some of the mysteries behind Chanel's great genious.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Portrait of an Icon By Red Pineapple As an enthusiastic admirer of Coco Chanel's style and of the fashions she created, I was excited to read this book. I was surprised to find out that Chanel was an immensely complex and interesting person, even aside from her creative life. She came from very humble beginnings, lived through two world wars, survived tragedies, heartbreaks, and scandals, and through it all, she worked hard to realize her dreams of success. She is someone whom even non-fashionistas can admire. She was tenacious and clever, and her innate sense of style came through in everything she did. This book features wonderful photographs of Chanel, a handy index, and even a guide to the author's sources. For anyone who is even remotely interested in fashion, this book is a god-send. For everyone else, this book tells the story of a courageous and complicated woman who fought for her success and did things her own way. This was one of the best books I read in 2007, and I will definitely re-read it in 2008!
