Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination: The Untold Story of the Actors and Stagehands at Ford’s Theatre, by Thomas A. Bogar

Review "Bogar painstakingly rehearses each and every actor, manager or stagehand, many of whom knew Booth well, for a run-through of the horrendous shooting and escape and delineates how individual versions varied hugely and would determine important legal consequences in a court of law. "— Kirkus Reviews"In their myriad accounts then and later, who was telling the truth and who was inventing? Bogar takes on all of these and more, and provides a fascinating look at the rest of their lives and the way few of them ever really escaped being a witness to history."— HistoryBookClub.com"In Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination, Thomas A. Bogar has done a masterful job of tracking them all down. His fascinating story follows not just the actors and theater owners but the orchestra conductor, the scene painter, even the ticket taker and errand boy."— The Courier Journal“Dr. Bogar's scholarship is original and impeccable. With stunning clarity, this vivid narrative shines a light into the shadows and behind the scenes of the most resonant crime in American history. Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination is an indispensable resource for understanding the width, breadth and scope of the tragedy at Ford's Theatre.”— Erik Jendresen, writer/producer Killing Lincoln, Band of Brothers

Verge Old-timers who read this may remember a television show from the 1950s entitled You Are There. Under the guidance of Walter Cronkite, viewers experienced time travel to relive historic events. It hasn't made it to television yet - and You Are There has given way to reality shows - but this new book, Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination by Thomas Bogar, PhD, is the next best thing. I have been addicted to the story of the Lincoln assassination for over fifty years, and I truly thought that I knew 99% of what I needed to know (and too many theories and "what ifs" that I didn't need to know). Dr. Bogar's book has proven me wrong. His focus on the effects of Lincoln's assassination on the actors, actresses, and theater staff at Ford's Theatre after the horrendous event of April 14, 1865, has filled a huge void that few in that field of research have even attempted to address. First, let me say that his theater background has enhanced his work tremendously; it is not just "history," it is a historical production. We learn the history of the theatrical world in mid-19th century America, the role that it played in social history as well as the hits it took from the culture of that time. One of the most famous plays in history is Our American Cousin, made famous strictly because it was being performed at Ford's Theatre on the night of Lincoln's death. Dr. Bogar, however, has given it life in the book by describing it in detail in a type of written dress rehearsal. This reader felt as if she were the only member of the audience as she watched the textual presentation unfold on the pages before her. Shining the spotlight on the actors, actresses, and theater personnel is the highlight of Bogar's work, however. He has meticulously researched them, citing numerous primary sources, and dwelling on the emotional distress of interrogations, arrests, and imprisonments. Equally interesting is the information on what happened to these people in later years. Dr. Bogar writes in a free-flowing style that draws the reader in and holds one's interest. His attention to detail and his use of primary source material speaks to the experts -- while his knowledge of the theater and his empathy for those who were collateral damage from the deed of John Wilkes Booth keep the average reader absorbed. This is definitely a must-read for anyone with even a slight interest in the Lincoln assassination. Kudos to Tom Bogar.

It traces the lives of all the actors, managers and stagehands who worked at Ford's Theatre the fateful night of April 14 and views the tragedy through their eyes. For the most part, these were quite ordinary people (their profession as thespians aside) caught up in the maelstrom of an extraordinary historical event. Almost all are forgotten today, with the possible exceptions of Laura Keene (perhaps the best known actress of her day), Harry Hawk (the actor on stage when Booth fired his fatal shot) and Edman Spangler (stagehand sent to prison as one of Booth's accomplices), but the author tracks down each one of them, skillfully weaving their personal stories into the great drama of the assassination. On many levels this book is a revelation. Many of those who entertained Lincoln that evening actually had secessionist sympathies, and the author rightfully questions whether there were those in the cast and crew who may have known that something momentous was going to happen that evening, albeit a kidnapping attempt rather than murder. He also gives us an overview of the theatrical stock company system of the Civil War era and a synopsis of the plot of Our American Cousin. For obvious reasons, he focuses a great deal of his attention on the case against Spangler and the reader is left sympathizing with this poor illiterate man who may have known about Booth's kidnapping scheme but was probably just as shocked by the murder as anyone else. Also touching are the efforts made on Spangler's behalf by his boss, John T. Ford, who paid for his defense attorney, and then worked to get him pardoned by President Johnson. Anyone who wants a fresh look at this forever fascinating topic should purchase this book.

His Backstage at the Lincoln Assassinations entails a most interesting concept: the involvement of and effect upon the forty-six cast and stagehands engaged at Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865, and the chaotic aftermath. This book is really two histories in one. First, the stage production procedures of that era, the description of the cast and crew, and the effect that the assassination had upon those persons. Accustomed as we are to our modern theatrical entertainment, it is hard to imagine how and what was done for a 1865 production. The second intertwined story describes the "vigilante mentality" that propelled the legal process of the many arrests and finally the conspirators' military trial. Emphasis is placed upon the Ford brothers, a few actor friends of Booth, and the only member of the theatrical company convicted of aiding and abetting Booth's escape - that being the simple-minded scene-shiffter and carpenter, Edmund "Ned" Spangler. Quite amazing to me was the description of the near medieval treatment imposed upon the trial defendants. The legal procedures of this military trial may surprise you. Accounts of John Wilkes Booth's enticing charm, constant drinking, and psychological reaction to General Lee's surrender and black union soldiers set the stage (no pun intended) for his cowardly act. I would like to tell you more, but you would be well served by reading it for yourself.

In April 1865, Richmond had fallen, and the Confederacy was dying. Robert E. Lee had surrendered his army to Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia. Joseph Johnston was in North Carolina negotiating the surrender of his army to William T. Sherman. But in South Carolina, General Edward Potter was leading 2,500 Union soldiers, including the famed African American regiment the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts, through the state's interior, intent on destroying the railroads and equipment. This is the story of Potter's Raid. Using rare and nearly forgotten accounts, historian Tom Elmore has compiled the story of this often-overlooked campaign that featured the last shots of the Civil War in the state that started it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and great numbers of locomotives and railroad facilities were destroyed By James Bonhamton In the spring of 1865 the destruction of the Confederate States was completed, but General Sherman wanted to give South Carolinians one more kick to insure that they would stay down for a very long time. The CSA had very little strength left, but when Sherman sent a raid on Florence, SC, the raid was driven off, unexpectedly. Soon another raiding group, commanded by Union General Potter, started out to wreak havoc on the interior of the state. With very little opposition, stores of goods and supplies, and great numbers of locomotives and railroad facilities were destroyed. South Carolina was in a depressed condition for many decades, for citizens black and white suffered poverty for 65 years and more.Tom Elmore has done a service to history in providing the details on a little-known postscript to history, in an interesting way.

By STACYHGG My Skylar by Penelope WardSeries: Gemini #3 (Standalone)Genre: Contemporary RomanceAge Group: New AdultRelease Date: June 11th 2014Length: Full-Length NovelFormat: Kindle eARCSource: from Author for honest reviewReview Date: June 10th 2014Steam Rating: HotOverall Rating: 5+++ STARSReview:Wow... Books like this one are why I read. Books like this don't come around too often. To say I loved it would be an understatement. I ADORED it. From page one until the very last page it kept me captivated, an emotional mess in the best possible way. I couldn't put it down and read it straight through--it was worth a sleepless night.I have been becoming bored of Coming of Age (NA) books lately and I find myself eyerolling more than I care to admit. My Skylar was a breath of fresh air when the genre IMO was becoming stagnant. I need to put that out there because if you are feeling the same you may not want to dig into this one and that would be a huge mistake. This was an emotional one. I went through so many tissues, and have red, puffy swollen eyes--but it was worth it. So worth it. I laughed, and I cried, and I laughed some more. GAH!!!! Just a sec--totally fangirling over Penelope right now... o.OOkay so what was it about? As the blurb states it's the friends-to-lovers story of Mitch and Skylar. If you read Jake Undone (which I also LOVED) we met Skylar as Nina's friend. I didn't actually remember her until the part came up when she met Nina. You see this novel is a complete standalone, like the other two, so you can read them in any order without fear of spoilers. The characters of the second book just appeared for a few cameos ;)Anyway, Mitch and Skylar meet when they are children and spend a summer leaning on each other through hard times. I adored seeing them this way, it was so cute and heartfelt. They are separated for a few more years before life brings them together again when they are teenagers. They are friends for awhile, and although they are really attracted to each other, Mitch's past makes him cynical of love from a young age. He doesn't want to hurt the one girl he cares about so he tries really hard to keep things platonic. But their chemistry is undeniable. However, just when they think it will finally be their time, tragedy hits. This is where the tears hit big time. Mitch stays by her side throughout this horrendous ordeal, and my heart broke into a million pieces watching this couple try to make it through this. I fell in love with him over and over and over again. I don't think I could love his character more.Unfortunately, this couple will have to deal with much more than one tragedy. It was as if they just couldn't catch a break--I died a little inside every time they were torn apart. And then their was Skylar's character. I really don't remember EVER loving a female heroine as much as this one. She was funny, witty, smart, brave, and had a huge heart. She was the other half of Mitch. She was his soul mate. And that's what this novel was about--beautiful, passionate, soul deep love. A love so deep it hurts to read."It's f@#$ing painful," he said."What is?""How much I love you.And I FELT IT TO MY BONES. I felt EVERYTHING this couple went through. And the moral of the story is everything happens for a reason. Something good came from each and every heartache they faced. I understood why they had to go through the things they did. Painful yes, but worth it in the end--just like this novel :)Overall, I can't stress how AMAZING this book was. Simply PHENOMENAL. I highly recommended all of Penelope's books, but this is her best novel to date! It is a MUST READ!!!!~StacyHggBooks Unhinged Book Blog

In order to explain why, I have to provide some spoilers, so don't continue if you want to read the book.First, I REALLY do not want to read about the sex lives of teenagers. This story begins with the couple meeting when they are children and then finding each other again in high school, and we have the whole high school romance thing, which is a little twisted because Mitch has to get over his fear that the relationship will go bad if they go beyond being friends and then when he finally does, Skylar gets cancer. Two things here, I'm a grown woman, I am not interested in teenage love and sex. This goes on for 15 chapters! Second, there is nothing so depressing as cancer and really puts a damper on love and sex. Mitch's sudden turnaround is never explained. What happened to change his mind so drastically? And then the same thing for Skylar. Why does she drop him just because he going to college in Boston? I mean, seriously? She's going to graduate from high school a year later from him. Boston has more colleges than any other city in the country. Why wasn't there just ONE time when she considered going to college in Boston? Why did she keep saying that they would be separated for four long years? Boston and New York...really not far apart either. When Skylar dumps him after all Mitch has done for her when she was sick, I was pretty much done. I kept reading, I kept hating Skylar. I kept wanting to get to the grown-up part, but even with Part Two when they were adults, I still felt like these people acted immature and weak. In the end, Skylar and Mitch get back together. That's after Skylar totally screws Kevin over. Yay, happy ending! Seriously? I finished the book. Can't say it was a pleasant experience though.

By Moonrise Book Blog Trying to capture in words the essence of this story is as futile as trying to find the magic formula for love. Simply put, this book holds a magical tale that will catch you by surprise, take your breath away, and make you fall in love over and over again.Skylar and Mitch first met as kids. Mitch's parents were going through a rough patch, and in an effort to shield their son from the worst of it, sent him to his grandmother's house for the summer. But despite their efforts, he knew things were bad, and began tuning out the rest of the world to cope. That is, until he met Skylar. Having experienced a similar disruption in her young life, Skylar was understanding. But more importantly, she was able to bring Mitch out of his shell with her sense of humor and enthusiasm for life. By the end of summer, they were best friends.Throughout the years, Skylar and Mitch's paths continued to cross. And although the story begins at a pivotal point in adulthood, we discover the full scope of their lives and interactions, as told by both Skylar and Mitch, including their perspectives on the obstacles in their way. Ultimately, these characters never quite let go, and through the storytelling, we learn why. It will pull at your heartstrings, and will make you laugh and cry, because love is messy, complicated, unpredictable... but it is also true bliss. And it will come along when you least expect it.Along with our main characters, we reconnect with old friends from previous books, and meet up with new characters--some are equally charming, while others are much less so. But all are fully developed, perfectly entwined with the plot, and add meaningful elements to the story. This is an ambitious and poignant tale of an entirely human experience that will leave you deep in thought, long after you turn the last page. Unlike anything else I've read, this story is as much a journey for the reader as it is for Skylar and Mitch. And for anyone who has ever felt the kind of love you can't explain in words, this story will bring you home.Note: This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

While I do not read as many historical romances anymore, I did find Secret Promise to be an enjoyable read. There are loads of drama, romance, secrets- past and present, along with danger and suspense. The plight of Edward is not so far-fetched as to be unbelievable if fact there are probably many who were jailed unfairly during the Civil War. Anna’s story is not quite as believable. For Anna to become a business woman during this time period shows what a strong individual she really is. Caring for her young son at the same time is almost an unbelievable feat. Still. I would like to think that it would have been possible. Then it is totally impossible not to love their son, Zachary. I was captivated by this young man every time he made an appearance.Secret Promise has these strong characters, a believable plot as well as plenty of intrigue. It made for a pleasurable read. I would read more by this author. The author provided a copy for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting historical romance By Madhatt Good storyline involving a seven year separation of two young lovers caused by unfortunate circumstances. At eighteen Edward leaves England to deliver a ship to Virginia, leaving his love Anna with promises to return quickly and an unexpected pregnancy. Seven years of hard living follow before Edward finally makes his way home, however what he finds is beyond his worst nightmares. Anna is not sure how she feels about Edward and she never told their son who his father was, a fact that hurts Edward seriously. On top of all the emotional turmoil there is a series of bizarre “accidents” the constable either can’t solve or is refusing to solve. Although there is a bit of literary license taken on the history, which the author fully acknowledges, it is still a pretty sweet romance with likable characters, and an entertaining plot.**This book received in exchange for an honest review* *

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. more of an outline than a full story. By Mary Received this free for a review. I felt like I was reading an outline for a story. The book's romantic leads take up the majority of the book all other characters have very small roles. There is little description of the physical settings in the book - houses, clothing etc. You would need to know the era to fill in the blanks. The hero returns after seven years to find his sisters house has burned, his home has burned but the elderly servants don't mention what has happened to the woman he loves. She has a young son. Guess who the father is. The heroine is a strong woman until the end where she becomes weak then is strong again. Her young son meets his dad for the first time and the reaction is lack luster. You are able to determine the plot of the story, who the father is, who the villan is, and that there will be a happy ending before ever reaching the end of the story. As I said this seems more of an outline than a story and needs to be fleshed out a bit more. (less)flagcomment · see review

The hardcovers are great as they stand multiple readings without damaging the spine. Mine came in perfect mint condition and factory shrink-wrapped. Each one collects 12 comics and is an awesome read to go along with the show

Best Ebook Finger Lakes Wine Country (Images of America), by Sarah S. Thompson

For more than 150 years, Finger Lakes Wine Country has played a major role in American wine history. At its heart are the four deepest Finger Lakes, part of a group of 11 long, narrow lakes in central New York. There, nestled among Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Lakes, farmers began planting vineyards in the 1830s. In 1860, the Pleasant Valley Wine Company became Americas first bonded winery, turning Keuka Lake into a busy shipping hub for fresh grapes and award-winning champagnes. Other wineries soon followed, as did railroads and basket factories. Early 20th century business was good until Prohibition forced wineries to reinvent themselves. In the 1950s and 1960s, innovators like Charles Fournier, Dr. Konstantin Frank, and Walter S. Taylor experimented with hybrid and European vinifera grape varieties. But by the 1970s, local grape growers faced extinction; it would take a grassroots movement and landmark legislation in 1976 to bring about a Finger Lakes wine renaissance.

By Carol Doolittle Being in the winery business we know that the information presented by Sarah Thompson is not only accurate but enjoyable to read. What an education even we got! The pictures tell such an enriching story. She shows how history laid the foundation for the more than 400 wineries in New York State today. I ordered copies to give as Christmas presents. Her writing makes learning fun.

Thompson has written a good shorthand history to accompany the photographs By DPHBrooklyn This note was originally published on the web site FingerLakesWine.infoWood. Not many of us rhapsodize over it. But after paging through the first portion of Sarah S. Thompson’s book, you may succumb to the material. So to speak. There are remarkable pictures of huge wooden barrels (for fermenting and storing wine), wooden crates (for picking grapes and packing wine), and baskets made of wood veneer (millions were made for shipping grapes). Of course the wineries were made of wood too, which explains, in part, why they burned to the ground so often. There aren’t any photos of laborers toiling and sweating in the vineyard, so all these wooden objects comprise a proxy for the huge amount of physical labor needed to make wine in those early days.Finger Lakes Wine Country is primarily a picture book. Thompson has written a good shorthand history to accompany the photographs, but it cannot substitute for a book like “Circle of Vines.” Ideally, newcomers to Finger Lakes wine history might want to purchase both of these books and read them in tandem. For those of you familiar with the history, this book is akin to a family photo album. It reactivates memories, proves points long forgotten, and is apt to induce reverie. This is a good book to curl up with this winter in front of a fire. Read it slowly. Stare at each photo a long time. Sip a glass of Finger Lakes wine. Let your mind wander. That’s the kind of book it can be — if you make it so.

Fearing Arcadia books are generally photographs with extended explanations under. That is partly why I buy them. But this book, Finger Lakes Wine Country, is a more concise accounting in prose than I have encountered in an Arcadia book before. More than just pictures, it is fact filled and enlightening outline of the history of New York's Finger Lakes wine history.I would recommend it to anyone with a local interest in the subject, but also to people with more academic interests needing an overview of many of the forces and personalities who made the Finger Lakes a major wine appellation.Great effort and I will look for more from this author.

Now in her 40s, the family resemblance is uncanny, but Cecily is a shadow of her former self. A part of her died that fateful summer. Returning to the deserted family farm, Cecily recalls the light before the storm, before the war came and before the terrible family tragedy. She remembers how everyone was guarding a secret. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Poignant and lyrical family saga on the eve of World War II By digsblues This is a rich family saga that begins on a farm in Suffolk, England, during the eve of World War II. It's the story of two sisters. Rose, the older one is 17 and beautiful, capturing the eye and attention of the local boys. Cecily is 3 years younger, still awkward and coltish, living in the shadow of her older sister. It's partly a coming of age story as Cecily tries to piece together the truth of her fractured family. "A piece of jigsaw floated in the air above their heads and did a jig. If she could just catch it, Cecily thought, she might complete the puzzle."The description of life in the small backwater town is lovely, but there is a constant feeling of a coming doom. "How deep the summer had bitten into the land that last August, how cruelly it had burnt into earth and grass and air. What had started out as a pastel and water-faded spring became unexpectedly a splintering, shimmering thing. All it took was a spark to cause the fire. Why had no one noticed?"It is not only the war that is threatening, but a family tragedy is in the making. There are many narratives, interwoven seamlessly, then dropped and picked up again. The structure of the story isn't in chronological order, but starts with an awful event that changes everything and remains a mystery until Cecily returns home, 29 years later. If you are the type of reader who wants to be told everything upfront, you may not enjoy this. I loved it because it kept me speculating and wondering until the end of the book. There is a huge cast of characters which usually confuses me, but these came to life and it was like watching a movie. I was very interested in being shown who was important, and who was just a walk on character. There were flashbacks throughout the narration, but they were well-done and I always followed easily. One fascinating plot line was the politics in England at the time when war broke out. There were dangerous consequences for previous decisions made by good people. While reading, I realized that certain actions were wrong, but didn't understand why until later. Those who enjoy historical fiction will find this an absorbing book, too, especially in reference to the departure of the Arandora Star. That was a sobering snippet that I'd never heard. As an avid reader, I found this book one of the more engrossing that I've found in years. Highly recommended. Read the "Look Inside" to see if it's your cup of tea. I knew it was mine immediately.

Confusing, but interesting By Ely @ Tea & Titles A copy of The Last Pier was sent to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is a hard book for me to review mostly because I don’t really know how I feel about it. When I first looked it up on Goodreads I was excited—1939, England, family secrets—it all sounded very Atonement to me. Atonement is one of my favourite books, so how could I possibly turn this down?It has a very similar plot to Atonement—an annoying little girl who doesn’t understand the way her older (but still annoying) sister behaves, which then leads into a whole lot of secrets and issues. In other ways it’s very different—The Last Pier looks at both a British family and Italian family. It was really interesting to see the contrast between how the families operated. I won’t lie, I didn’t like any of the Maudsleys (apart from Joe) at any point but I did like all of the Molinellos the whole way through, but I didn’t enjoy the parts about the Molinellos as much.It does jump between the two families in kind of a strange way. You’ll be reading about Cecily Maudsley one second, then suddenly you’re reading about Lucio Molinello and then you’re reading about what the cook thinks. It was incredibly jarring. It just kept jumping back and forth between characters and past and present. Usually I don’t mind that, but I found this one particularly hard to follow as sometimes you only had a few lines of one character before it switched. I like the whole trying to work out the secrets backwards thing, and the unreliable narrator but there were times where I thought the mystery was dragging on too much. There were things that just didn’t need to happen for the story to move forward and I found myself getting a little bored at times. The writing was really nice, but sometimes I had no idea what was going on. Sometimes it felt like the writing was trying too hard to mysterious that it just sort of lost the impact for me. That being said, I really did like how everything came together, and I especially liked the ending—I felt that it really suited the characters and the story.Could I sum up how I feel about The Last Pier? No, I don’t think I could in plain terms. I know I liked it, but I don’t know to what degree.Thank you to the people of Gallic Books who were kind enough to send me a copy of this book for review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Just okay for me. By deb 3.5 starsFor me, this book was very slow and VERY confusing at the beginning and then I realized that I wasn't supposed to know how Rose was killed. That was the story and the mystery of the whole book. However, I do have to say that this book felt as though it was translated from another language and not done very well. There were many parts of it that I did not understand. I did get the gist of it, but there were many times I wasn't sure if it was just filler, if I should be getting something out of it or if it was just over my head. A lot of it didn't relate to anything. There was also the fact that the story would jump around a whole lot. I would be reading thirty years ahead and all of a sudden it would jump thirty years back or vice versa without any warning or heads up. That was confusing at times. While all the questions to the mysteries were answered, I'm going to say the stuff that I did not understand was fluff meaning this book could have been told in a much shorter version and would have made for a much better book.I would like to thank Gallic Books and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this entertaining e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

A fascinating story, but at times, it had a tendency to drag.Lydia Garrett and Lord Anthony Danbury are an unlikely pair. She works at a coffee house, he is an aristocrat. But they do have one thing in common. To catch a murderer. Lydia’s guardian and Lord Danbury’s father have both been murdered, and it would seem their deaths are somehow linked. Lydia finds the link between the two men in a diary, and Lord Danbury learns that Lydia’s guardian had been on the same ship as his father. They both learn of an amazing tale regarding the spiriting away of something called The Peacock Throne. Now, Lydia, Lord Danbury, and Marcus Harting—a government official that thinks Danbury isn’t as innocent as he would like everyone to believe—set out to find not only the murderer, but the throne that was hidden years ago. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones seeking the throne. The French are quick on their heels to find the location of the throne and take it for themselves. Lydia, Danbury, and Harting embark on an amazing adventure that takes them over the high seas, through tribe inhabited jungles, and to foreign lands. There hope is to draw out the murderer before he can capture the throne or cause any more bloodshed.I enjoyed THE PEACOCK THRONE with its twist and turns, but the pacing of the book was a bit slow for my liking. The main characters were well fleshed out, and the secondary characters added to the depth of the story. Lydia is strong-willed, but still every bit a woman. The attraction that both Lord Danbury and Marcus Harting begin to feel towards Lydia makes for an intriguing triangle. But knowing two of the three are deceiving the other will keep the reader interested in not only the outcome of the throne but who will win Lydia’s heart. The last third of the book moves at a quicker pace, but the middle was a bit slow. Still, it was an adventurous read.Book provided for review purposes.

I would like to first say how much I love historical fiction By Jalynn Patterson About the Book:When Miss Lydia Garrett's guardian is murdered, and the authorities refuse to investigate the odd circumstances, she vows to catch the culprit. When the amateur sleuths join forces with the professional agent, the quest for the throne leads them around the globe on an adventure steeped in danger, treachery, and romance. My Review: I would like to first say how much I love historical fiction. It is a history lesson and usually a beautifully fantastic love story all rolled up into one. This one is set in the 1800's so it is a murder mystery, romance, and history. It is a story filled with intrigue and it pulls you in right away and in a split second you are transported back in time and before long I was trying to help Anthony and Lydia. It is a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With a very well researched plot lone and a unique story all it's own The Peacock Throne left me breathless right up to the last many especially when the plot thickens and twists and turns start occurring. You can follow right along with the investigation and come up with your own conclusions. A very well written story!**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

And Lord Danbury, father of Anthony Danbury is murdered. Lydia and Anthony find each other and realize that the two men served together in the navy. They find correspondence that links the men's time in the navy with the murders- and a reference to the Peacock Throne, an Indian treasure. Marcus Wiltshire is also interested in the murders. He's a British intelligence agent who has heard rumors that Napolean Bonaparte wants to return the throne to India and cause trouble between the English government and India. The three end up together seeking the throne and attempting to find out who has been behind the murders.I liked the premise of this story. It's a different scenario than one I've read before. But, although the book was interesting, it wasn't my favorite. I never felt as though the characters were well-developed. I found myself wanting to get to know them more. There was more action and dialogue and less introspection on the part of the characters.Another thing that made the story one I wasn't as taken with is the historical setting. I don't enjoy the very formal, stilted interactions between the characters. Although I know that it's probably historically accurate, I think it makes it harder to connect with and understand the characters- especially if there is supposed to be a developing romance. All in all, this is a story that is different enough to be interesting, and it can be enjoyable if you like the time period. I give The Peacock Throne 3.5 stars and a G rating for content.

What happens to a band of brothers By Ralph Blumenau The book begins in Akure, in the south-west of Nigeria, in 1995, though there will be flashbacks to earlier events. The story is told, twenty years later by Ben Agwu, who in 1995 was nine years old. He has three older brothers: Obembe (then eleven), Boja (fourteen) and Ikenna (fifteen). They started to go fishing in a polluted river which, for superstitious reasons, is out of bounds to the people of Akure. They are discovered; their mother tells their father, who works far away from Akure but who comes home some weekends, and who punishes them brutally. It makes Ikenna into a rebel and he closed himself off from his younger brothers who had up to that time been his unquestioning followers. But perhaps it was not his father’s punishment, but a sinister prophesy which a madman (strikingly described throughout) had uttered by the side of the river that made him behave so unaccountably strangely towards his brothers and to disobey their mother. He destroys objects that are precious to the family. First the brothers are afraid of him; then they become afraid for him, for he was clearly possessed by a spirit which made him afraid, suspicious and angry. He lost his health and his Christian faith. They pleaded with him, swore that the madman’s prophesy was false, but to no avail. Eventually Boja, previously the brother closest to Ikenna, can take no more and there is violence between them, with tragic results, the consequences of which for the rest of the family reverberate through the second half of the book. Terrible imaginations haunt their minds. Obembe decides that everything that has happened, all the bad sprits in the house were due to the madman’s spells, and he planned to exorcize his influence by killing him, and Ben reluctantly and fearfully goes along with the plan. (At this stage the two boys are aged only twelve and ten.) I must not say more about the events which follow, but they are nerve-racking and tragic. The whole story has some of the elements of a Greek tragedy. The portraits of the boys and of their parents are superb. The parents are fierce but loving, and as the story unfolds, one feels more warmth for them than one did in the earlier pages of the book. The style is striking, and abounds in original expressions. Here is just one example: “Mother was about to say something, but the words tripped backwards in her throat like a man falling from the top of a ladder”. The vocabulary of the boys’ mother is particularly rich in images. We learn a lot about Nigerian customs, foods, beliefs, climate, street scenes etc. Traditional African religious beliefs coexisted with devout Christianity. And the story is told against the background of Nigerian politics during those years. A military junta, run by General Babangida had been running a military junta since 1985. He had called elections in 1993; but when these were won by the civilian M.K.O.Abiola, Babangida had overturned the result and had resumed power, only to be overthrown by General Abacha in another coup later that year, and he remained in power until 1998. Ben’s family had been supporters of Abiola, and had witnessed a lot of violence in Akure during the 1993 election.

A story about stories By Trilbe Wynne I read a lot but I don't write many reviews because, in most cases, other reviewers have already said everything that I would say. With The Fishermen, though, I want to point out that this novel isn't just about Nigeria. This novel provides smart narrative insight into the way that stories affect human lives. The novel, which is set in Nigeria in the 1990s, revolves around a Nigerian family (and the story is also an allegory of Nigeria's political history) but the implications in this novel can be seen in human dynamics anywhere in the world and at any time in history. The narrative is specific but the themes are universal. The truth is, stories affect us. We become invested in the stories we're told and our investment comes with consequences. The Fisherman brings this truth to light through a vibrant, compelling narrative. At times, I felt sorry for the brothers in this story or I was angry at them. At other times, I was happy for them or hopeful. What's important to me is that, from beginning to end, I always felt something. The Fishermen explored several profound philosophical themes, but the author didn't neglect the characters or sacrifice the basic narrative while looking more deeply into the human condition.I try to read literary fiction more often than popular fiction because I'm human, so I'm always looking for intellectual growth. Unfortunately, a lot of contemporary literary fiction is more concerned with deploying literary themes than with crafting a strong and compelling narrative. The Fishermen is a wonderful work that doesn't sacrifice entertainment while giving the reader enlightenment. Honestly, I'm awed by Obioma's ability to entertain me and keep me enthralled in the story, while simultaneously giving me philosophical food for thought. The novel is also beautifully written, with language that is poetic without being pretentious. I bought this book for myself on Amazon, but it feels like a gift.

The locals attend church weekly but also honour the ways of the traditional gods. The local dialect has no word for "scientist" so that is a word that must be said in English.Ben is the fourth son in a family of six. He and his three older brothers roam the town and one day while fishing in the local river they have an encounter with the town's madman who tells them that the oldest boy will be killed by his brother. This sets in motion a chain of events that will split the family apart. When I'm rating books I always have a slight dilemma: should I rate the book based on how well it is written or by how much I enjoyed it? If it's the former, I'd give the book 4 stars. The writing is simple and yet full of imagery and you really understand what it would be like to live in that town at that time. But if it's the latter, I'd rate it 2 stars. I struggled with this book - I appreciated it but I didn't enjoy it. I was all set to abandon it halfway through when it was announced as being longlisted for the Booker prize, and then I felt obliged to see it through. Hence I have settled on 3 stars. In many ways, it feels like a Shakespearean tale - there is violence and madness and intense grief. Parts reminded me of MacBeth, other parts of Hamlet. But it's also a uniquely African story. It's my failing I'm sure, that I found it slow moving and I kept wanting to shake some sense into the characters.
