The First English Translation of the Wartime Diaries of the Eldest Daughter of Nicholas II, the Last Tsar of Russia, with Additional Documents of the PeriodIn August 1914, Russia entered World War I, and with it, the imperial family of Tsar Nicholas II was thrust into a conflict they would not survive. His eldest child, Olga Nikolaevna, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, had begun a diary in 1905 when she was ten years old and kept writing her thoughts and impressions of day-to-day life as a grand duchess until abruptly ending her entries when her father abdicated his throne in March 1917. Held at the State Archives of the Russian Federation in Moscow, Olga’s diaries during the wartime period have never been translated into English until this volume. At the outset of the war, Olga and her sister Tatiana worked as nurses in a military hospital along with their mother, Tsarina Alexandra. Olga’s younger sisters, Maria and Anastasia, visited the infirmaries to help raise the morale of the wounded and sick soldiers. The strain was indeed great, as Olga records her impressions of tending to the officers who had been injured and maimed in the fighting on the Russian front. Concerns about her sickly brother, Aleksei, abound, as well those for her father, who is seen attempting to manage the ongoing war. Gregori Rasputin appears in entries, too, in an affectionate manner as one would expect of a family friend. While the diaries reflect the interests of a young woman, her tone grows increasingly serious as the Russian army suffers setbacks, Rasputin is ultimately murdered, and a popular movement against her family begins to grow. At the point Olga ends her writing in 1917, the author continues the story by translating letters and impressions from family intimates, such as Anna Vyrubova, as well as the diary kept by Nicholas II himself. Finally, once the imperial family has been put under house arrest by the revolutionaries, we follow events through observations by Alexander Kerensky, head of the initial Provisional Government, these too in English translation for the first time. Olga would offer no further personal writings, as she and the rest of her family were crowded into the basement of a house in the Urals and shot to death in July 1918.The Diary of Olga Romanov: Royal Witness to the Russian Revolution, translated and introduced by scientist and librarian Helen Azar, and supplemented with additional primary source material, is a remarkable document of a young woman who did not choose to be part of a royal family and never exploited her own position, but lost her life simply because of what her family represented.

Winn The book is the first of its kind, because it consists of the authentic diary entries of one of the daughters of the last Russian Tsar. In addition, it is not an indiscriminate repetitive collection of diary entries, but a collection of what looks like carefully chosen representative ones. Some of the entries have been published in Russian (never in English as far as I know), but many of the diary entries I am seeing here for the first time… As a bonus, the book does not only contain Olga’s diaries, but also some other valuable primary sources, including never before published (in English) diary entries of Tsar Nicholas II himself, as well as the memoirs of Alexander Kerensky, and the events seen from their points of view. These, and others, make this book an important resource for WWI and Russian revolution scholars and history buffs too. If you are looking for primary source material of this period, this book is definitely for you.

My loser husband seems to get more pathetic by the day. Fired from his job and happily unemployed, he seems unwilling to lift a finger to help me--in or out of the bedroom. I've become more of a supervisor or a sitter than a spouse. Nothing turns me off more.Mike--now there's a real man. College football star. Strong. Confident. Not afraid to take what he wants. He knows how to treat a lady right. He tells me he has friends that would love to meet me, but I think they have something much, much dirtier in mind. What hotwife would say no to four men at once? Especially when I know they are going to take me hard, rough, and without protection! My relationship with my cuckold husband will never be the same!

With a single shot from a pistol small enough to conceal in his hand, John Wilkes Booth catapulted into history on the night of April 14, 1865. The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln stunned a nation that was just emerging from the chaos and calamity of the Civil War, and the president's untimely death altered the trajectory of postwar history. But to those who knew Booth, the event was even more shocking-for no one could have imagined that this fantastically gifted actor and well-liked man could commit such an atrocity. In Fortune's Fool, Terry Alford provides the first comprehensive look at the life of an enigmatic figure whose life has been overshadowed by his final, infamous act. Tracing Booth's story from his uncertain childhood in Maryland, characterized by a difficult relationship with his famous actor father, to his successful acting career on stages across the country, Alford offers a nuanced picture of Booth as a public figure, performer, and deeply troubled man. Despite the fame and success that attended Booth's career--he was billed at one point as "the youngest star in the world"--he found himself consumed by the Confederate cause and the desire to help the South win its independence. Alford reveals the tormented path that led Booth to conclude, as the Confederacy collapsed in April 1865, that the only way to revive the South and punish the North for the war would be to murder Lincoln--whatever the cost to himself or others. The textured and compelling narrative gives new depth to the familiar events at Ford's Theatre and the aftermath that followed, culminating in Booth's capture and death at the hands of Union soldiers 150 years ago.Based on original research into government archives, historical libraries, and family records, Fortune's Fool offers the definitive portrait of John Wilkes Booth.

Fortune's Fool: The Life of John Wilkes Booth, by Terry Alford

Review "Alford's masterful biography charts the psychological space in which Booth seems to have zigzagged for most of his life, between artistic sensitivity and delusional self-inflation....The book is as deeply as it is broadly researched, giving us both the daily textures of Booth's life and the arcing currents of his time, not only a story about the assassin, but also about the culture from which his infamy sprung." - Peter Birkenhead, Los Angeles Review of Books"Fortune's Fool is a better, more comprehensive, and more consistently fascinating attempt at explaining John Wilkes Booth than any yet written." -- Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly"Alford has produced a deeply and exhaustively researched monograph that offers a complex portrait of Booth drawn from those who knew him or at least thought they knew him.  At the same time, the book contains a wealth of anecdotes and amusing notes that simply make it a wonderfully written biography of one of the most notorious figures in American history." -- Brian C. Miller, Humanities and Social Sciences Online (H-SAWH) "Terry Alford has delivered a nuanced and intricate portrait of killer John Wilkes Booth, and he has also vividly depicted the arc of his life and the context of a fiercely divided America in a way that echoes life today.  A natural storyteller, Alford explains how Booth fixated on Lincoln, and how he came to see the president as the cause of the nation's ills." -- Elizabeth Taylor, Literary Editor at Large of the Chicago Tribune and a National Book Critics Circle Board Member"As Alford's excellent book makes clear, Booth was a celebrity in his own right, and his high profile heightened the drama of the deed: imagine if Elvis Presley had assassinated President John F. Kennedy." -Foreign Affairs

"Fortune's Fool is so deeply researched and persuasively argued that it should stand as the standard portrait for years... Readers will know how this story ended, but Mr. Alford's recounting of Booth's flight and the Army's manhunt is a tour de force of sustained drama, never losing its breakneck pace and offering startling revelations." -- Harold Holzer, The Wall Street Journal

"A vivid, gripping portrait of the charming, impetuous, and troubled Booth, whose ill-fated and ultimately murderous path often seems to strangely echo the doomed Shakespearean characters he played on stage. " -- Library Journal

"The 'first full-length biography' of Abraham Lincoln's assassin offers much nuance and complexity to the killer ... Alford sifts through the more balanced, credible sources of those who knew Booth before the assassination to flesh out a surprisingly engaging portrait of the brilliant young actor and deeply riven sympathizer to the Southern cause ... Alford paints some intriguing shades of gray in this elucidating portrait." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Exemplary... Alford's book examines Booth's movements and interactions in greater depth than any of its predecessors, drawing a clear picture of the psychological spiral that led to his plot to kidnap -- and, when that failed, to kill -- the president." -- The Boston Globe

"Based on meticulous and exhaustive research, written in vivid prose spiced with wry humor, Terry Alford's Fortune's Fool is a tour de force by a masterful historian. This eagerly awaited biography exceeds the high expectations so long entertained by Civil War buffs, Lincolnians, and lovers of American history in general." -- Michael Burlingame, author of Abraham Lincoln: A Life

About the Author Terry Alford is Professor Emeritus of History at Northern Virginia Community College. He is the author of Prince Among Slaves, which was made into an award-winning PBS documentary in 2007.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Excellent biography of one of history's most infamous villains By J. Weaver In the introduction, Terry Alford states that "Fortune's Fool is the first full-length biography of John Wilkes Booth ever written." It's almost impossible to believe, as Booth was one of the most well-known actors of his time and more information exists about his life than contemporaries who were not so famous prior to becoming infamous. But, as best I can tell, the claim is true; there have been shorter works about Booth, as well as multiple longer books about his life leading up to and following his assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but no full books about his entire life.We see in these pages a man of many contradictions, whom it is tough to reconcile with the assassin we already know. By all reputable contemporary accounts (and Alford includes and remarks upon many not-so-reputable accounts as well), he was driven and held intensely to his political beliefs, but none suspected him of being capable of murder, much less the murder of the President of the United States. Many facts revealed in this book were shocking (for instance, his grandfather often helped local slaves escape, and Booth himself was adamantly against secession until it actually occurred).Alford's writing style isn't the most captivating that I've ever read, but it's far from dry and unreadable, and Booth proves to be an interesting enough figure to make up for even the lengthiest lists of stage actors who are next to impossible to keep straight without referring to a previous page. In the end, though Alford doesn't apologize for or seem to sympathize with Booth's beliefs and actions, we're left with what can only be seen as one man's descent into what seems some form of madness, a story that would be tragic if not for its outcome.Definitely worth reading for anyone with any interest in American history, as it provides the overlooked other side of one of our nation's darkest moments.

Fairbanks Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, but history refuses to free the 16th president from John Wilkes Booth, the assassin who ended Lincoln's life on the evening of April 14, 1865. Booth's ghost haunts Lincoln's legacy and is now resurrected in Terry Alford's Fortune's Fool: The Life of John Wilkes Booth. In the introduction, Alford offers the surprising information that this is the first full-length biography of the actor whose most famous role was not on the stage of Ford's Theater, but in the box where Lincoln was watching a performance of Our American Cousin. Like other infamous figures, Booth has been defined by his most notorious act, but he did more than pull the trigger on that fateful night. The son of a brilliant actor, Booth was a brilliant actor himself, a famous one, too, once billed as "the youngest star in the world." As a boy, he had "a gentle disposition" and was his parents' favorite of their nine children. Later, he was "a wild and impetuous youth" with a sadistic love of torturing and killing cats. In adulthood, he was a deeply troubled man whose obsession with the fortunes of the South made his encounter with Lincoln seem almost predestined. A fortune teller who read his palm told him, "I've never seen a worse hand. I wish I hadn't seen it." She said his would be a "life full enough of sorrow, full of trouble."And so it was. Alford follows Booth's sorrowful life to its conclusion, writing with force and bringing his subject into clear focus. John Wilkes Booth made his mark, a bloody and regrettable one, that will stain Lincoln's legacy and American history forevermore.Brian W. Fairbanks

Essential reading for all students of Abraham Lincoln By Robert Moore I have been a passionate student of the life and ideas of Abraham Lincoln for a very long while and currently own approximately 250 to 275 books either by or on the man I believe to be not only the greatest American president, but the greatest American. But there is a gap in my large Lincoln collection: I own only two books on the assassination of Lincoln. Furthermore, I always get a sense of dread when a biography approaches April 1865. I believe it to be one of the great tragedies in American history, and especially in Southern history. No one caused more harm to the South, in my opinion, that John Wilkes Booth. Instead of a president who genuinely believed in reconstruction, we instead got an inept president who favored retaliation and a Congress that shared his mood, if they shared almost nothing else.As a result of this avoidance on my part of reading about the killing of Lincoln I have really not learned much more about Booth than I learned from various Lincoln biographies. That is actually quite a bit, but nonetheless I found that this wonderfully researched and well-written biography of Booth to be exceptionally informative. I came away from it understanding significantly more about Booth, how his personal beliefs were formed, and the why he thought killing Lincoln to be a heroic act instead of the utterly stupid event that it actually was. One also gains a sense that Booth's killing of Lincoln was not just a horrible loss to America by losing a genuinely great president, but a meaningless waste of Booth's own life. "Fortune's Fool" is an apt phrase for the title. So much loss for such a ill-conceived project.I heartily recommend this book. If you are interested in Abraham Lincoln, I strongly recommend two books about the assassination and burial of Lincoln. I recommend this one as the best volume on his actual assassination, and I recommend the Kunhardt's TWENTY DAYS: A NARRATIVE IN TEXT AND PICTURES OF THE ASSASSINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE TWENTY DAYS AND NIGHTS THAT FOLLOWED (one of my most treasured Lincoln volumes is Don E. Fehrenbacher's LINCOLN IN TEXT AND CONTEXT, which contains an inscription from Fehrenbacher to two members of the Merserve family - a Kunhardt married a Merserve, and the absolutely gigantic collection of Lincoln photos the Merserve's had collected moved into the Kunhardt's, who continued to expand the collection and bless us with several splendid and lavishly illustrated books on Lincoln - so I have a book inscribed by one of the greatest Lincoln scholars to the greatest collectors of Lincoln photos, which were used to produce TWENTY DAYS). I don't have the tiniest bit more of sympathy for Booth than I did before, but I do feel that I know and understand him more.

Between 1933 and 1939, representations of the Nazis and the full meaning of Nazism came slowly to Hollywood, growing more ominous and distinct only as the decade wore on. Recapturing what ordinary Americans saw on the screen during the emerging Nazi threat, Thomas Doherty reclaims forgotten films, such as Hitler's Reign of Terror (1934), a pioneering anti-Nazi docudrama by Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr.; I Was a Captive of Nazi Germany (1936), a sensational true tale of "a Hollywood girl in Naziland!"; and Professor Mamlock (1938), an anti-Nazi film made by German refugees living in the Soviet Union.

Doherty also recounts how the disproportionately Jewish backgrounds of the executives of the studios and the workers on the payroll shaded reactions to what was never simply a business decision. As Europe hurtled toward war, a proxy battle waged in Hollywood over how to conduct business with the Nazis, how to cover Hitler and his victims in the newsreels, and whether to address or ignore Nazism in Hollywood feature films. Should Hollywood lie low, or stand tall and sound the alarm?

Doherty's history features a cast of charismatic personalities: Carl Laemmle, the German Jewish founder of Universal Pictures, whose production of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) enraged the nascent Nazi movement; Georg Gyssling, the Nazi consul in Los Angeles, who read the Hollywood trade press as avidly as any studio mogul; Vittorio Mussolini, son of the fascist dictator and aspiring motion picture impresario; Leni Riefenstahl, the Valkyrie goddess of the Third Reich who came to America to peddle distribution rights for Olympia (1938); screenwriters Donald Ogden Stewart and Dorothy Parker, founders of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League; and Harry and Jack Warner of Warner Bros., who yoked anti-Nazism to patriotic Americanism and finally broke the embargo against anti-Nazi cinema with Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939).

Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939 (Film and Culture Series), by Thomas Doherty

Review

With a rich blend of art and politics, Doherty brings to light the story of how Hollywood handled Nazism during Hitler's reign. Recommended.

(Library Journal (starred review))

Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939 tracks the advance of fascism, and the movie industry's reaction on screen and in private.... [A] fascinating work.

(Kate Muir The Times (London))

A lively study of Hollywood's relationship to Nazism.

(Emily Greenhouse Culture Desk blog, The New Yorker)

Wide-ranging and brightly written.

(Dave Kehr The New York Times Book Review)

(Philip Kemp Times Higher Education)

A remarkable and stimulating account of an important part of movie history and American history.

(Rob Hardy The Commercial Dispatch)

[Doherty's] books on American cinema from the 1930s to the 1950s are essential reading: Pre-Code Hollywood and Hollywood's Censor: Joseph I. Breen & the Production Code Administration.... No one has told this story in as comprehensive or convincing a fashion. As always, Doherty's work is well researched.

(Clayton Koppes Cineaste)

A witty writer familiar with Hollywood history and manners, Doherty places the studios' craven behavior within a general account of the political culture of the movies in the thirties and forties.

(David Denby The New Yorker)

[A] riveting read.

(Merve Emre The Millions)

Mr. Doherty fully understands the studio system and how it juggled interference from its own internal agency, the Production Code Administration. He doesn't deny the greed and fear that motivated studios, but he puts the behavior in context.

(Jeanine Basinger Wall Street Journal)

Meticulously researched and captivating.

(Noah Isenberg Times Literary Supplement)

Doherty masterfully describes how the movie industry, mostly headed by Jews, ultimately came together at a time when the nation needed unity.... The book is crisply written, well documented.

(Burton Boxerman St. Louis Jewish Light)

[A] judicious and comprehensive history of the period.

(Mark Horowitz Tablet)

Doherty provides a more nuanced and accurate account of Hollywood's relationship with Hitler, and his book should be considered the authority on the subject.

(M. Todd Bennett American Historical Review)

Hollywood and Hitler is an excellent addition to Doherty's impressive oeuvre, well worth reading for its important insights, strong narrative, and mastery of the period.

(David Welky Journal of American Studies)

Doherty's book is well documented and brings together a corpus made of lesser-known, yet signifying feature films.

(Hannah Graves Film Quarterly)

Review

Thomas Doherty traces a powerful historical narrative as Hollywood's treatment of European fascism dramatically changes with the rise of Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco. Hollywood and Hitler, 1933–1939 marks a significant advance in our understanding of the American film industry in the 1930s and also in our appreciation of a wide range of films and filmmaking practices, revealing Hollywood as a social and geopolitical force.

(Thomas G. Schatz, author of The Genius of the System: Hollywood Filmmaking in the Studio Era and Boom and Bust: American Cinema in the 1940s)

Meticulously researched and vigorously written, this comprehensive account of Hollywood, Hitler, and all points in between is both a scholarly tour de force and a riveting page-turner. Marshalling his finely-tuned expertise in American studies, film studies, and twentieth-century history, Thomas Doherty unfolds an epic chronicle of dueling ideologies, complicated celebrity politics, and the unstable boundaries between art, entertainment, and propaganda as World War II drew near. This is cultural analysis at its fascinating best.

(David Sterritt, chairman, National Society of Film Critics)

Insightful and adds much detailed information By Maine Colonial When the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, they understood the importance of propaganda and the critical role of cinema in promoting the party's aims. Joseph Goebbels, as Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, made it a priority to Nazify all areas of art and took a particular interest in the preeminent UFA film studio.During the six years of the Nazi Reich before the beginning of World War II in 1939, the US film industry was not quick to tackle Nazism. It's not too surprising, given the strength of isolationist feeling, but Doherty tells us exactly why there was only one Hollywood film released about the Nazis and their violent practices before 1939. (I Was a Captive of Nazi Germany, whose making Doherty describes in detail.) He details how the Production Code Administration and local censorship boards quashed nearly every attempt to tackle the subject, and how the studios themselves hesitated to rock the boat and lose the opportunity to sell their own products to German distributors. For an academic publication, this is written in an almost breezy style. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but it's certainly a very readable treatment, filled with personalities and inside-Hollywood stories. Chapters about the abortive attempt to make nice with Mussolini by getting his son involved in the picture biz, Leni Riefenstahl's disastrous publicity junket to the US to promote her film Olympia, about the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League's near-whiplash when Germany and the Soviet Union signed their Non-Aggression Pact, all read as entertainingly as a gossip column. Some of the most interesting parts of the book cover the role of newsreels in covering Nazi Germany. Newsreel-only theaters in New York played to full houses and audiences didn't hold back their feelings when big-name political personalities appeared on the screen. There was even a newsreel theater on 96th Street that showed pro-Nazi reels right up until Pearl Harbor.Although isolationist feeling in the US continued even after England and France declared war on Germany in 1939, Hollywood finally went to war, beginning with films like Confessions of a Nazi Spy and The Mortal Storm. They must have hit a nerve: a Warner Bros. Warsaw executive reported, after he fled Poland with just the clothes on his back, that the Polish theater owners who booked the former film "were hanged by the Nazis from the rafters of their own theaters."This is a rewarding read for anybody interested in World War II history or the history of the film industry. Double points for those interested in both

How Hollywood Only Eventually Fought the Nazi Threat By Rob Hardy Nazis have become staple villains for Hollywood, from _Casablanca_ to _Indiana Jones_ and to the counterfactual _Inglourious Basterds_. It took a long while for the movies to include them as bad guys, and this was at least partially because the moguls feared that they would lose the German market. Partly, too, it was because they thought American audiences didn't want politics injected into entertainment. The surprising story of the slow but eventual acknowledgement by Hollywood that Nazis were a menace is told in _Hollywood and Hitler 1933 - 1939_ (Columbia University Press) by Thomas Doherty who obviously loves the movies. He has written before about pre-code films and about the censorious life of Joseph Breen (who plays a big role in this book as well). He admits that "failure of nerve" by Hollywood during its "Golden Age" of the thirties was part of the general slowness of American culture to accept the Nazi threat, but the details of Hollywood's particular reluctance make for a fascinating part of movie history."During the first wave of Nazi terror," writes Doherty, "the commentary from the motion picture industry journalists and Hollywood producers reflects the natural befuddlement of cool businessmen up against hot-headed fanatics." Mild jests and veiled allusions to Hitler were cut. When Breen could do nothing, often local or state censorship did the job. The German consul in Los Angeles, Dr. Georg Gyssling. He was always interested about forthcoming movie projects, and if there was any hint of a film that might impugn the honor of Hitler or the glory of the Fatherland, he was quick to get complaints to Breen, heads of studios, or Washington politicians. The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League, mostly actors more radical than their bosses, butted heads with Gyssling frequently. They made sure that Leni Riefenstahl (whom they called "Hitler's Honey") got snubbed when she came to Hollywood in 1938 with hopes of working out a distribution deal for _Olympia_, her epic documentary of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Doherty pays particular attention to newsreels, with "The March of Time" getting credit for denunciation of Hitler's totalitarianism. Beside "The March of Time," the other standout in making movies pay attention to the Nazi threat was the Warner Brothers studio. While other studios kept trying to make the connection pay until war was declared, Warner ceased business dealings with Germany in 1933. Jack Warner simply pulled out of Germany when the Jewish head of his studio's branch office in Berlin was viciously attacked by brownshirts. Warner had put out patriotic films and short subjects, but the studio's great stroke was _Confessions of a Nazi Spy_, released in 1939 only a few months before Europe went to war. It was the first time the word "Nazi" made it onto movie marquees and menacing Nazis were shown in a Hollywood drama. While the studio deserves credit for changing the way Hollywood got along with Nazis, it was still in the movie business and big on ballyhoo for itself. Publicity for the film called it "the picture that calls a swastika a swastika!" and patted itself on the back that "it was Warners' American duty to make it!" Gyssling tried to get Breen to share his indignation about the proposed film, but Breen had finally had enough and didn't try to placate the consul. In making the picture, Warner Brothers tried to keep portions of the script available to the actors only on a need-to-know basis, and they kept the set closed with signs that would misdirect potential saboteurs from Germany or from German-American groups.Doherty's history is a remarkable and stimulating account of an important part of movie history and American history. He has included not just how Hollywood handled Hitler but also Franco and the Spanish Civil War. His book closes with America entering the war, and after that it was pretty easy for Hollywood to decide how Nazis ought to be shown in American movies. It sure did take a while, though.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Hollywood and Hitler is a detailed account of how America's filmmakers dealt with the rise of the Nazis By C. M Mills "Hollywood and Hitler's purpose is to trace the rise of German Nazism in the turbulent 1930s and how Hollywood filmmakers dealt with the Reich. During this perilous time, the film business lost revenue as the flow of American made films slowed from a rapid stream of product to a sluggish trickle. Author Doherty makes the reader aware of nefarious events in Europe affected the film industry. Among them:1. The expulsion of all Jewish personnel in the film business in Germany.2. The flight of American film companies such as MGM, RKO, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Universal and others from Germany due to the oppression of the Nazis. Hitler took office in January 1933 making things deleterious for freedom in film productionin the Reich.3. Doherty devotes a long chapter on the impact of the Spanish Civil War. The war was a brutal and bloody contest between the Republicans backed by Stalin's Soviet regime and the Loyalists led by General Franco who received men and arms from both Germany and Italy. Documentary cameramen brought the horrors of the conflict to the American screen in newsreels and feature films.4. Doherty discusses the importance of newsreels in keeping Americans abreast of European developments.5. Warner Brothers was the industry leader in promoting Americanism through their patriotic shorts and feature films. "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" was one of their best films in exposing the Nazi evil to Americans.6. Doherty examines the importance of Hollywood in providing a refuge for artists and movie stars from Nazi rule. Among the expatriate community in Los Angeles: Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang, Ernst Lubitsch, Marlene Dietrich, Conrad Veidt, Thomas Mann and many others.7. During most of the 1930's major Hollywood studios tried to avoid using Jewish characters in their movies in an attempt to continue importing films to Germany. This book is filled with information most general readers are not familiar with. It adds to our understanding of how America reacted to world events as they peered at their movie screens. Among sage quotes:"Germany was a lucrative market to cultivate and exploit..."-p. 17"The backfire from the Spanish Civil War was also cinematic. For the first time in motion picture history, the sights and sounds of mechanized warfare on European soil were captured by newsreel cameras."-p. 139"Director, athlete, actress, filmmaker, Leni Riefenstahl was the Valkyrie goddess of Third Reich cinema, the lone shimmering star in a constellation of dim hacks."-p. 293 Dr. Thomas Doherty, the book's author, is a distinguished professor at Brandeis University. I found the book to be more detailed and interesting that "Collaboration" another recent book which covers much of the same territory. The book deals with business and politics and is sober and dry reading. It is well illustrated with period photos and cartoons. A good bibliography is included. "Hollywood and Hitler" reads like a textbook and could be included in a college level course on film or America in the 1930s.4.

A Praxis II Test Study Guide Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the Praxis II test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the Praxis II test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game, then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the Praxis II Subject Test is written by our Praxis II test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the Praxis II test. Our original research into the Praxis II: Subject Assessment, offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the Praxis II test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the Praxis II test.

Regardless of which Praxis II test you have to take- you have come to the right place. Here you will find everything you need to know in order to be successful and get your certification.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the Praxis II test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the Praxis II test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the Praxis II test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the Praxis II test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the Praxis II test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the Praxis II test...

The Exclusive Test Taking Techniques

  • The Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hard
  • How to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers --
  • Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writers
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

I purchased the Secrets file, and I just wanted to let you know that I got a 99% on my test. I just want to thank you again, and hope you have continued success in your ventures. Sincerely, Paul L.

My name is Chris. I used the Secrets study guide for five days. The study guide made the test so easy to understand. Like you said this program is worth 100's of dollars. To me 1,000's!! THANKS, Chris G.

I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I had ZERO preparation! I was nervous about the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Brian

Just dropping you a note to let you know that I am completely satisfied with the product. I had already taken the test once and landed in the 75 percentile of those taking it with me. I took the test a second time and used some of your tips and raised my score to the 97 percentile. Thanks for my much improved score. Denise W.

I heard about your website from a friend. I am enrolled in a review course, and in hindsight, I wish I wouldn't have taken my review course and instead spent a fraction of the money on your program. Thank you! Zac L.

You get at least 10 times your money's worth! --When you consider what's at stake with the exam, we believe the value of our study guide gives you at least ten times your money's worth.

Our CRT & RRT Exam Study Guide Is Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the CRT & RRT test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the CRT & RRT test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game so you can become a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the Certification Examination for Entry Level Respiratory Therapists and Written Registry Examination for Advanced Respiratory Therapists is written by our CRT & RRT test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the NBRC Examination. Our original research into the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) Exam and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Exam, offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the CRT & RRT test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the CRT & RRT test.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the CRT & RRT test.

But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the CRT & RRT test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the CRT & RRT test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the CRT & RRT test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the CRT & RRT test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the CRT & RRT test...

The Exclusive Test Taking Techniques

  • Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about them
  • Get quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.
  • Details the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the CRT & RRT test that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activities
  • Our researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.
  • A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master the toughest problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantage
  • Learn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. Many test takers use exactly the wrong strategy, but you can avoid the pitfalls with the help of our standardized test experts
  • Includes instructions detailing the best way for you to get started with your preparation efforts so you can begin the path of improving your scores immediately
  • The most efficient and accurate method for picking the right answer every time- You won't be scratching your head trying to read the mind of the test question writer, but will instead know exactly what to look for to pick the best answer
  • Courteous, unlimited customer service is 100% free- if you need the product emailed to a different address, lose the product, or have any other difficulty- the help you need is just a short email away and our representatives are active 7 days a week helping customers
  • The research of our team of test experts is 100% independent and original
  • Our exclusive "calibration strategy" to help you never go too fast OR too slow when answering even the toughest questions
  • The 5-step process we've developed, what we call the "phased" approach, concerning the use of the various study aids and practice tests
  • How the problem of procrastination can kill your chance of success, and the most important thing you can do about it
  • How to know when you've studied as much as you need to for the exam- and the reason why we think some people should spend LESS time studying for the test
  • The Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hard
  • How to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers
  • Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writers
  • Our "benchmark" method for deciding which of the answer choices you should pick
  • How some of the random bits of information in a question often "give away" the right answer choice
  • How to "milk the question" for clues to the right answer even if you have no idea what the question is asking about
  • How to avoid panicking when you don't know the answer to a question- we offer a systematic method that will serve as the "lifeline" you need to minimize the time wasted on the test questions that leave you stumped --
  • What to do about the tough questions that you have no clue how to answer- don't just give up, use the advice we offer to make sure you give yourself the best chance of getting the right answer
  • How to use our brainstorming method to get "inside the question" and reveal the hard-to-find clues and some of the subtle things you didn't realize you knew

Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.
