A wonderful and rare insight By Dr Margaret A Harris This novella offers a wonderful and rare insight into the lives of people involved in the sex worker industry. I have read much literature on the same topic set in Australia and other countries - this story definitely portrays the lives of those working and those who are paying from a new, raw and honest viewpoint. The characters are strong and complex and there is a depth lacking in other stories which seem to be focussed on hard lives of drugs and misery. It is also funny - something lacking in other stories. I loved it and read it in one go, now wanting to read more.

I was very much enjoying it but the abrupt ending didn't make it worth the few dollars I spent. I expect a better story from this author whom I have thoroughly enjoyed in the past.

Ubiquitous and enigmatic, the historical Lincoln, the literary Lincoln, even the cinematic Lincoln have all proved both fascinating and irresistible. Though some 16,000 books have been written about him, there is always more to say, new aspects of his life to consider, new facets of his persona to explore. Enlightening and entertaining, Exploring Lincoln offers a selection of sixteen papers presented at the Lincoln Forum symposia over the past three years.Shining new light on particular aspects of Lincoln and his tragically abbreviated presidency, Exploring Lincoln presents a compelling snapshot of current Lincoln scholarship and a fascinating window into understanding America's greatest president.

Exploring Lincoln: Great Historians Reappraise Our Greatest President (The North's Civil War (FUP))From Fordham University Press

Review "The rich variety of insights and information on Lincoln and the Civil War served up in this book makes it truly a moveable feast. Some traditional interpretations are confirmed; others are challenged and new perspectives set forth; and all are of unfailing interest. This is a volume to be kept handy on your shelf and consulted again and again."--James McPherson, Princeton University

"This is a veritable feast for Lincoln devotees as astute historians probe Lincoln through many perspectives, with perhaps the most thrilling account being the sensational discovery of a cache of Mary Todd Lincoln's letters. A must-read for those who want a better understanding of the sixteenth president."--Anthony S. Pitch, author, "They Have Killed Papa Dead!" The Road to Ford's Theatre, Abraham Lincoln's Murder, and the Rage for Vengeance

"This collection of essays about Lincoln and the Civil War was compiled by the aforementioned Holzer, and the historians Craig LO. Symonds and Frank J. Williams. There are some absolute gems here." -Dayton Daily News

About the Author HAROLD HOLZER is Roger Hertog Fellow at the New-York Historical Society and one of the nation's leading authorities on Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. He is chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation and has written, co-written, or edited forty-seven books, most recently Lincoln and the Power of the Press.CRAIG L. SYMONDS is Professor Emeritus at the U.S. Naval Academy and the author of many books on Civil War and naval history. He won the Theodore and Franklin D. The Secret Heroes of WWII

UPDATE: THIRD EDITION - WITH ADDED CONTENT!!

~ READ FREE WITH KINDLE UNLIMITED ~BONUS RIGHT AFTER THE CONCLUSION - ACT NOW BEFORE GONE!

One of the questions that often gets asked about the concentration camps of World War II is how the Nazi’s were able to gain the compliance of all citizens in order to segregate and murder over 6 million Jewish people. The number is staggering. That number represents nearly two thirds of the Jewish population in Europe. With anti-Semitic feelings growing in Europe again, this is a valid question. The answer is fear. Citizens feared that they would meet the same fate. That their loved ones would be punished. So many turned a blind eye, or worse helped. There were those that did not. These are those that we consider heroes of the Holocaust. They worked in secret, guarding children, families, innocent men and women condemned to die simply because of their faith. Learn more about the man hailed as the real “Captain American”, risking his life to smuggle out large numbers of Jews at a time. Find out why he would be haunted until the end of his life because of those he couldn’t save. Read about the country whose citizens believed in the ideal of human kindness on a widespread basis, sacrificing their freedom for those that believed something different from their own faith. These are but a few stories of bravery and the indomitable human spirit that resides in us all if we dare to find it. DOWNLOAD NOW! Scroll up to Buy with One-Click!/h3>

Comments From Other Readers

“In one of the darkest times, these stories shine like a beacon of light. Each story is well written and gives not only the details of sacrifice made, but also the history behind them. These are not the types of things you read about in your standard history text. The author paints a picture of unity and brotherhood that our nations sorely need to find today.” - Rolland (Manitoba, Canada) “The Holocaust brings tears to my eyes. Ever since I read the Diary of Anne Frank when I was in school, I’ve been interested in the events of World War II. The idea that nations could turn a blind eye while 6 million people were murdered is shocking. Men, women, children, it didn’t matter. That’s why books like this one are so important. Not everyone was blind to the horror. There were heroes and this book is an excellent example of just a few that gave everything to save strangers. Well written, intriguing, and simply a good read.” - Christina (Missouri, US).

Less known Righteous Among Nations By softballgirl Everyone knows who Oscar Schindler was and how great his role was in saving Jews from the Holocaust. What most of us do not know is that he was not the only one.In this fantastic book Ryan Jenkins is telling the stories of less known “Righteous Among Nations”. Wow. Their bravery is stunning and it left me speechless. But it not just that the way Jenkins is telling their stories of bravery is also amazing. He is wonderful storyteller.I highly recommend this book about courageous people during the darkest time of the European history.

By vh This title talks about something that is not often discussed, the individuals that helped those that needed refuge and protection during World War 2. There is information on some of the people that helped, why they helped, what they did, and where they were from. There is also a list of notable people that were helped in this way. There are even pictures of some of these people, as well as details on why people would choose to help in the unsure war time. This book would be good to pick up if you love reading about good Samaritans.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. ~~Incredible and a Must Read~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! This is an incredible book which truly demonstrates the power of an individual's choice. Especially when a war is on and there are others watching your every movement. In addition to some amazing stories about the people, it also includes pictures and interesting background of Hitler and his reasons for the war.All of these stories are incredible and worthy of repetition. A number that really caught my attention was in reference to Mr. Wallenburg. He saved over 100,00 Jews in Hungary through his ingenuity. Although that number is impressive by itself the one that hit me the most was that today there are over a million descendants of these that were saved. Just think about that for a minute. And, what about the small country of Albania and the principle of 'Besa'? I had never heard of this before and am so impressed with this entire book. This is an excellent book filled with facts and items which should never be forgotten. Put this one into your must read stack soon. This is also a book that may be shared with others so will do that as soon as I hit 'send' on this one. Most highly recommended.

Abraham and Constand Viljoen were identical twins who took starkly different paths in life. One was a deeply religious man, who opposed apartheid; the other was a man of war, who became head of the SADF. But together they would play a crucial role in preventing South Africa from descending into civil war.In the early 1990s, Constand came out of retirement to head the Afrikaner Volksfront, which opposed the negotiations with the ANC and made plans for military action. Realizing that war would destroy their country, Abraham approached his estranged brother and urged him to consider the alternative: talks with the ANC.What followed was a series of secret meetings and negotiations that ultimately prevented civil war.Brothers in War and Peace documents the crucial yet largely unheralded role the Viljoen brothers played in ensuring peace in South Africa. Based on interviews with the brothers and other key political figures, the book gives new insights into a time when the country’s future was on a knife-edge.

The Afrikaner must be the most shamefully disgraceful nation of cowardly backbiting bastards.Thank God I turned my back on you lot that as that is why I am still mildly sane.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The truth revealed By Babs Illuminating, fascinating reading for any South African who lived through these times. Public for the most part oblivious to the power of the Broederbond and the insidious manner in which it operated. Gained insight into what drove the Afrikaners - their inability to see that their religious beliefs were in conflict with their racism. Their insular thinking, their denigration of people of color, their inferiority complex and hatred of English speaking whites, their total unquestioning obedience to their leaders, led to their downfall. Despite all of this, one feels compassionate towards them. The two brothers represent so many whites, both English and Afrikaans speaking. White people of conscience were silenced in a variety of ways. The majority of white citizens were unaware of what was happening; they were prevented from hearing and reading the truth via media and were punished if they went against the establishment. Many whites were content with the status quo and the comfort it afforded them. Even the minimally educated whites had job opportunities. Today their children, who were not born into apartheid are suffering the sins of their fathers.

And, everything continues on a downward spiral. The United Republic of America has a female in charge - President Salazar. The first invasion of the United States in 150 years is launched. Meanwhile, the majority of the US population (60%) is located in Kansas and Nebraska. Border control is one of the strategies employed. The author has a knowledge of military strategy and planning that kicks this story up a notch! I also thought the addition of the back side (to put it nicely) of politics played an integral part in book 3. In addition to the ground warfare, the aviation battles are well written. I appreciated the mention of the AN - 225's (borrowed from Ukraine) and the size of them. And, of course the comparison to a C -130. How many times I have sat in one of those web seats homeward bound!I liked the mix of characters, excellent plot and the ending is outstanding. I found it be a fast moving novel and most highly recommended.

The three books form an extensive vision of war and politics as well as an up-front view of combat. It is a story told on several levels: the individual fighter -- beliefs and actions -- military operations at the planning, tactical and strategic levels; politics in all its (sometimes) self-serving nastiness; war profiteers; and fanatics. This is a finely tuned story with a rich tapestry of characters. The book's final scene is high-octane combat, very pertinent to the story. The series ends on a political note, appropriately so. Although this book can be read as an independent novel, I recommend reading all three beginning with the first book. You'll find each book is better than the one before it. By M Chesney I was given an advance Kindle copy to review via Goodreads.I wish the other books in the series were this good. Clever twists, very tight storyline and the action is ramped up to a whole new level. No spoilers, but the war is, for all practical purposes, over about halfway through. Then the real fighting starts as most of the characters are brought together for one final battle. This is much grittier and darker than the rest of the series, which almost turned me off at first, but there's a strong redemption story arc running throughout that's surprisingly upbeat by the end. Great job and an enjoyable read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hobnobbing with the Aristocracy By Lee Armstrong When "The Man from Home" opened on Broadway in August 1908 at the Astor Theatre, playwright Booth Tarkington and his co-writer Harry Leon Wilson envisioned it as a satire on the coarseness of American manners. Little did they expect American audiences to cheer at the simple homespun common sense wisdom of Daniel Pike. William Hodge played Pike, a lawyer put in charge of a wealthy estate. He makes the trip to Sorrento, Italy because, although not too distant in age, he is the guardian of Ethel Granger-Simpson. Ethel has been hobnobbing with the wealthy European aristocracy, many of whom are unfortunately now broke. They seek "alliances" with wealthy Americans to replenish the family bank accounts. Ethel plans to marry playboy Almeric. The obstacle to the alliance is the consent of her guardian who must approve the "settlement" of $750,000. (This is still a lot of money today. In dollars from a hundred years ago, it must have been a whopping fortune!) Ethel petulantly explains that it is not a dowry, but is what she brings to the alliance. When Pike wants to know what Almeric brings to the marriage, Ethel spouts about his ancestors who fought in ancient battles. Pike isn't too anxious to liquidate what is the bulk of Ethel's fortune to her husband-to-be. The plot thickens as an Italian fugitive Georgeopolis, from Greece, shows up on the lamb. Sympathetic to his story, Pike befriends the fugitive and hides him. When Pike won't approve the settlement, Almeric's father, the Earl of Hawcastle who has been watching, uses the threat of aiding and abetting to throw Pike in an Italian jail if he doesn't approve the money transfer. Through a series of devices, Ethel overhears the real greed in the Europeans and gets in touch with her American self, which says you should work for what you earn. The play concludes as Pike approves the settlement just as Ethel breaks off the engagement. The final moments lead us to believe that the future holds something special for Ethel and Daniel Pike. This is a well-made play. It is delightful in its homespun roots and would play well to modern-day American audiences who reflect many of the same values 100 years later. The show ran for 496 performances, an incredibly long run in 1908-09 that attests to the tremendous popularity of the play. This is a little jewel that would play well in modern revival. Bravo!

Typical Tarkington In A Play By Dave_42 With Tarkington hitting a kind of rut with his novels, it isn't too surprising that he decided to try a different way of telling a story. He worked with Harry Leon Wilson, the writer of "Ruggles of Red Gap", to create "The Man From Home", a play which debuted in 1907 in Chicago and was published in 1908. The two would pair up several more times with such plays as "The Gibson Upright", "Tweedles", and "How's Your Health?", but this was their first venture. The story is pure Tarkington, or so it seems to me. To begin with, you have people from a small town in Indiana, though the scene is the Hotel Regina Margherita in Sorento, Italy. One of Tarkington's common themes of judging people by how they act, rather than by their family history or the money they have, is well in force. And there is some of the identity surprises as well.In the story, there are two Americans from Indiana (Horace Granger-Simpson and his sister Ethel Granger-Simpson) trying to rise above their humble origins by having Ethel marry the Honorable Almeric St. Aubyn, who is the son of Lord Hawcastle. Horace is taken with the Comtesse de Champigny, and all this has been put together by Lady Creech, the sister-in-law of Lord Hawcastle. However, in order for the marriage to happen, Ethel needs to pay a rather large settlement, and for that she needs the approval of Daniel Voorhees Pike, her guardian, whom she fears will be too American and embarrass her. Another subplot is a Russian man travelling under an assumed name and pretending to be German, and who happens to have become friends with Mr. Pike. Another is about a Russian criminal who is being chased by the police. In the first act, we meet the interested parties, and learn at least something about their characters. Tarkington and Wilson set the stage well as they introduce all the major threads, even though one of the characters has not yet arrived. The second act advances the story well, and introduces the last character as well as fills in the back-story a bit. We learn a lot more about Hawcastle's character, or lack thereof. The third act is the meat of the play, as the all three of the plots become joined together. The Hawcastle's are exposed, we learn who Vasili is, and Ethel learns about the shame of the family she was about to marry into, but her own honor does not allow her to back out of the deal. Act four deals with this new development. Ethel refuses to break her promise, and Pike somewhat surprisingly stands with her, and even agrees to the settlement, though it is by doing so that he ultimately frees her from her obligation. There are a couple of subplots, which really aren't needed for the story, but they don't hurt it either. A much bigger weakness is that there are too many amazing coincidences which tie these characters all together. Certainly one can accept Pike being Ethel's guardian, as we know that the guardian was on the way. Vasili's secret identity was also well established and one can accept it, and in fact it Vasili is an important character because he helps establish that it is possible for titled and rich people can still also be good human beings as opposed to the Hawcastles. The relationship between the Russian criminal (Professor Ivanoff) though is problematic. Though certainly an important character to expose the Hawcastles, his presence at this place at this point in time just when Pike can make use of it, is a bit too much to accept.Overall "The Man from Home" is a decent play, but not as humorous as one might expect from Tarkington and Wilson. The plot is just a bit too far out there to be believable. As a first effort it is interesting. Tarkington's theme of small town common sense and morals being more important than a title and riches is one we have read before, but being put into a play, and having Indiana meet European aristocracy is a different twist than what he has given us before. It is of some interest, but at the same time there is a reason why you don't see this play being performed very often. There were two films based on this play, the first being directed by Cecil B. DeMille in 1914, though the storyline is quite a bit different, and then another film in 1922, with Alfred Hitchcock given credit for title designer, but the film has been lost.

An Inspirational Handbook For Aspiring Foresters By George Asimos Jr. Though the facts are naturally dated the look into the passion and mind of one of the fathers of American Forestry makes this a worthwhile read, especially for aspiring foresters.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Useful Book on Forestry History By Leon Czikowsky This is a good book, written circa 1913, that provides us with a history of what a leading forest advocate expected of foresters. This book shows what early advice Gifford Pinchot had for preparing a person to become a forester. He believed a forester should know how to work to save a forest similar to how a surgeon have a patient. A forester should know all the different types of trees and their needs. A forester should know Silvics, which is how heat, light, and moisture impacts a tree's soil and how that soil affect other trees.A forester should know shrubs and the main small plants, insects, and the animals in that forest. A knowledge of the streams and how forests protect the streams is important. A forester should know how to safety travel through the forest at day and night. The central point of being a forester is to protect the forest for its greatest use by humans. A forester should know about lumbering and mining. A forester must look at the long term and how to maintain a supply of trees and forest products. The forest should be sustained for continual use. A forester should prevent forests from being destroyed by overuse.Forest Rangers protect against fires. They must respond rapidly when fires start.Pinchot was critical of a United States Senator who thought the Forest Service was tyrannical. The Senator mistakenly believed a constituent was removed from his house for no reason and left homeless by the Forest Service. It turned out the man had a false claim to an illegal saloon that was closed. Pinchot knew these false stories harmed the Service's reputation. In 1912, the Forest Service gave away over $196,000 of timber, logs, fencing, and fuel to citizens who could use it.There were over 3,000 people in the Forest Service circa 1913.Forest Service employees should become familiar with local farmers. There are often grazing area disputes that require the expertise of a Forest Service employee.Foreign Rangers and Forest Guards often see that fish and game laws are obeyed.Forest Rangers are in charge of things constructed within a Ranger's district, including buildings, telephone poles, trails, roads, bridges, and fences.A Supervisor should spend about half the time with office paperwork and half the time in the forest.A Foreign Assistant must pass a test of technical knowledge related to the job.In logging, it is important to determine which diameters of trees permit a profit and maintain a good silvic if harvested, and allow the forest to reproduce.A Forest Examiner looks at areas burned by fires and determines what replanting should be done.13 states has state forests totaling 3,400,000 acres circa 1913. New York had the most with 1,645,000 acres followed by Pennsylvania with 960,084 acres and then Wisconsin with just under 400,000 acres. Pennsylvania had the largest state government appropriation for forestry work, at $1,340,000 plus an additional $275,000 for chestnut blight actions.Ten states had state nurseries. In 1912, these nurseries produced about 20 million trees. 14 million of these trees were distributed to their states' residents.Pinchot observes that many state forests are heavily influenced by state politics. Many state foresters work for political appointees. The Forest Service provides publications to help citizens and their forestry needs. From 1900-1912, the Service produced 370 publications with a total of 11,198,000 copies. There were, circa 1913, 110 teachers of forestry at 23 forest schools and 51 schools for Forest Rangers and Forest Guards.

When their children were young, several parents interviewed in this book were told “you can’t expect much from your child.” As they got older, the kids themselves often heard the same thing: that as children with disabilities, academic success would be elusive, if not impossible, for them. How Did You Get Here? clearly refutes these common, destructive assumptions. It chronicles the educational experiences—from early childhood through college—of sixteen students with disabilities and their paths to personal and academic success at Harvard University. The book explores common themes in their lives—including educational strategies, technologies, and undaunted intellectual ambitions—as well as the crucial roles played by parents, teachers, and other professionals. Above all, it provides a clear and candid account—in the voices of the students themselves—of what it takes to grapple effectively with the many challenges facing young people with disabilities. A compelling and practical book, How Did You Get Here?offers clear accounts not only of the challenges and biases facing young disabled students, but also of the opportunities they found, and created, on the way to academic and personal success.

Ryan, Charles William Eliot Professor of Education and dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education   “Tom Hehir has delved inside the disability experience to break down the stereotypes that all too often trap people with disabilities and deny them the opportunity to pursue their inherent potential. This book is a must-read for educators, parents, and students with disabilities throughout America.” — Marca Bristo, President and CEO, Access Living   “I cannot exaggerate how much this book resonated with me and with my experience working with students with disabilities. By Deb I meant to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon reading a mystery novel, but I read the first chapter of "How Did You Get Here?" and couldn't put it down. The voices of the students, including co-author Laura Schifter, describe their lives in clear, engaging prose. At the end I had not only been introduced to some fascinating people, I also understood a bit about what role policy-making has in 21st century American lives. Read this book.

Thank you Dr. Hehir for sharing these stories. It's not often that we hear the student perspective regarding special education services, supports and accommodations.

At first, Paul was denial about his feelings and attraction for John, trying to convince himself that his interest in John was only in what John could do for his career. However, John got Paul to acknowledge the truth that was both unique and HOT! This story puts a new twist on the student/mentor trope and it makes for a sexy, enjoyable read.

Erwin Rommel, the “Desert Fox” of World War II, was a brilliant tactician and an inspiring leader of men whose views on how to conduct military operations were perfectly attuned to the German Blitzkrieg style of warfare, with its emphasis on the use of massed armor and fast-paced, deep penetrations. This book is a detailed examination of why Rommel and his panzers were so successful. It includes an analysis of the composition, tactics, doctrine, personnel and hardware of the panzer divisions, and why they were so effective in the hands of excellent tacticians such as Rommel. The book also analyzes why the armored formations of Germany’s adversaries, which were often more numerous and powerful, were at a disadvantage by comparison. Following his career from the battlefields of World War I to his death on Hitler's orders in the autumn of 1944, this book provides an intriguing insight into the leadership style of a master of armored warfare. The text is illustrated with black and white photographs and full-colour maps that help the reader to understand the sequence of events during particular engagements.
